Bills had the ball and fumbled it in the endzone, the vikings didn't have procession since it was 4th down and they didn't convert. The Bills had it at the goal line since they had to start where the vikings left off

And that wouldn't have happened if the starting position had been farther up field. They had to run the ball and try to gain some yards because a victory formation kneel down would have been a safety.

What happened at 19:19 was the QB was short of the TD and the Bill took possession where teh ball was last spotted inside their own 1 yard line. On the next play, the Bills tried to run the ball out of the endzone to jsut get room to run another play but they fumbled and gave possession to the Vikings.

As others have pointed out, the Bills did have the ball at the 20:00 mark but it was just fumbled. Wish they showed the fumble on replay because it was one of the craziest moment in sports I've ever seen.

Hi guys...The ball can be thrown (or tossed) backwards at any time, any number of times, anywhere on the field. However, if dropped it is considered a fumble. The ball can only be thrown forward when the thrower is behind the line of scrimmage (blue line) and it is not a live ball once it hits the ground.

...and to answer one of their other questions on why they don't do it more often...because it's very, very risky. it does happen and sometimes it wins games...but it rarely happens because many things can go wrong and usually does go wrong.

I’ve watched many reaction channels that watch hundreds of NFL and CFB videos and they still analyze things like it’s their first time watching. i dont know if anyone clarified the overtime rules for you yet. first to score a touchdown wins the game, if you have to settle for a feild goal, other team has one drive to score a touchdown. if they settle for a feild goal, then next score of any kind wins. thats why the game ended at with an interception with over a minute left to play. #SkolVikings

6:49 When anyone (quarterback, running back, wide receiver or tight end) is behind the line of scrimmage (where the ball was snapped from) they can attempt a forward pass. Once the ball is carried or passed beyond the line of scrimmage, think rugby rules. Only backward laterals are legal. Also very risky, which is why often you never see it until desperation moments at the very end of the game.

The overtime rules in the NFL are currently that if a team scores a TD first they win. The other team doesn't get a chance. But if a team scores a field goal the other team gets a chance to score. Because both teams got a chance to score the viking interception ended the game in sudden death.

That’s only in the regular season. In the playoffs both teams get at least 1 possession even if the other team gets a TD. If both teams get a TD the game continues and the next score wins. There are ties in the NFL in the regular season. If no points are scored or they end the OT still tied after 10 minutes the game is a draw. I think it happened twice in the 2022 regular season? I know the Commanders and Giants tied and I believe the Colts and Texans was the other tie. In this OT, the Bills still had time on the clock and at least another down to attempt to get a TD and end the game without giving the Vikings another possession. It’s risk vs reward. They potentially had a game tying FG but still had the opportunity to win the game outright with a TD thus the aggressive nature of the play. The Bills QB had a receiver open in the end zone but he didn’t see the other CB come off his coverage responsibility. He took the risk and it didn’t work out.

If you have access to a full game with commentary that's the best way to learn football. Seems like you pretty much have the basics down. Skip the commercials but listen to the commentators, during what the world calls the slow boring parts the commentators discuss all the possible situations and strategy and explain exactly what's going on and all possible options. Believe me, if you love sports stats, information and graphics you will love American football and the announcers. Don't skip the pre-game, halftime or post game analysis either you'll be an expert by the end of one sunday, pre-game analysis starts about 3 hours before kick off so you'll get plenty of info on all the days games and events

You have to check out this game. 2013 NFC Championship 49ers vs Seahawks. This game was one of the best games in NFL history between 2 division rivals. This game was even better then the Superbowl which would take place 2 weeks later. How that game ended was nothing less than EPIC. SUPERBOWL XLVIII was an awesome game as well. The most prolific offense in NFL history vs a team that all sports analysts believed they had no chance in hell in winning the Superbowl. This was the last game I got to watch with my father, got sick that night after we watched the game. Diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away 2 days later, I will never forget how excited and happy he was that his Vikings came back. Even made we watch the highlight video with his after. These are highlights, the last minute and half the Vikings just took a knee and bled the clock. Also, on another video you were confused about the rolling clock. If a pass is incomplete, the player runs out of bounds, a turnover,or a penalty takes place (in general) the clock stops after a play. On a running play, a complete pass where the runner stays in bounds, a sack, etc. the clock continues to roll after the play. This is the reason each team gets 3 timeouts a half.

No, the game was over because it was overtime. If the Vikings had scored a touchdown on their possession, the game would have ended right there. Because they only got a field goal, the Bills had a chance to either tie with a field goal (which would mean the next team to score wins) or win with a touchdown. They failed to score when they lost possession of the ball, so the game was immediately over.

17:47 you can see one of the guys in blue start moving before everyone else. He had part of his body on the Vikings side of the ball so that’s why he got an offsides penalty and the Vikings got to try again.

As a guy who used to play middle linebacker, I always liked a quarterback who tried to run. That's a high-value target there. They wear a lot less in the way of pads to allow them to throw the ball, so they can get really hurt out there in the wild. If you guys would like to watch the greatest outside linebacker to play the game, his name is Lawrence Taylor, he played for the NY Giants. There's lots of videos on him you can watch. I must warn you, he once ended a good quarterback's career when he tackled him high (chest high) and broke his leg. It was a bit bloody. Lawrence Taylor changed the way football was played.

Important factors to winning; 1. 3rd down conversion rate offensive & Defensive . 2. Turn overs . Fumbles & interseptions lost or gain. 3. Time of possession. . Dominating time of possession equals more opportunity. its like having more shots on goal than the other team . Plus just keeping it away from opponent gives them "less shots on goal" . 4. Penalty yards. + or - hidden yards.

7:10 No player can throw the ball forward once they are past the line of scrimmage. They can throw it backwards, but you rarely see them doing this past the line because it's a very risky move. Attempting to pass the ball backwards in an active play with defensive players closing in on you, to a player who probably isn't expecting you to pass it to him, has a very high risk of a fumble. So most of the time it's not worth the risk of losing the ball just to attempt to gain a few more yards.

23:15 The bills were definitely going for the win with the touchdown. They probably would not settle for a tie with a field goal until 4th down. When you have confidence in the quarterback and offense (which the bills definitely should), you aggressively go and take the win. Because the Vikings scored a field goal first in overtime, The bills had three possible outcomes: 1. Touchdown- ends game immediately, bills win 2. Field goal - ties game, play continues 3. Turnover (Fumble, Interception, failed 4th down), game ends immediately, Vikings win.

One interesting piece of backstory about this game: the Bills star receiver, Stefon Diggs, was formerly the star receiver for the Vikings, but he was not satisfied there, so he was traded to Buffalo. Since then, the Vikings drafted Justin Jefferson who is arguably a better receiver. This game was Diggs against his old team (and against his effective replacement).

Not to mention that diggs was traded for a first round draft pick and that very draft pick they picked justin jefferson, who was by far the best receiver in the league this year and well on pace to being a top 5 if not top 3 receiver of all time and a shoe in for a first ballot hall of fame (which is an honor largely reserved for only the most exceptional players to ever play). The dude is breaking damn near every record he's eligible for. Most yards in a rookie campaign, most yards in the first two years of a career, and most yards in the first three years of a career. Honestly, barring a major injury next year, he's a lock on breaking that record for the first 4 years too. (That last part is for the op, lol I'm sure you know this)

2:50 That's what they call a "dead ball." Even though it got loose the player was already down by contact. If the ball came out before he was down it would have been a fumble and a "live ball" that anyone can pickup and gain possession.

The reason a quarterback runs is, his the receivers are covered, or he needs to avoid pressure. Sometimes he runs on a design play. The goal is to not lose yards, and gain as much as possible. Sometimes a two yard gain is a big play.

The QB in blue, Josh Allen is a big boy--6'5" 240lbs--bigger than most QBs, but he is also agile, elusive and pretty fast. He also has maybe the strongest arm in the league (and is also pretty accurate). He can throw the ball the full 100yard length of the field! It is impressive sounding, but even more impressive is to go out on a field that is 100 yards long and see it.

Absolutely love how into the game you both are getting and love watching two people new to something enjoy it just as much as we do! Here are three comments to add about your commentating that will clarify what appeared to be the part of the video where you had the most questions: 1. Starting at 17:45 video time: 4th down on the 1 yard line, they attempt to pass the ball in for a touchdown but he drops it. There is a penalty on the play. The defense jumped across the line before the ball was snapped resulting in an "off sides," a 5 yard penalty. Because they are next to the goal line, the ball is only moved to half the distance to the goal instead of five yards. The more important feature to this penalty is that ALL penalties result in a re-play of the down (with a few exceptions). 2. Starting at 18:01 video time: They replay 4th down after the penalty form the 1/2 yard line. The quarterback performs a quarterback sneak(running the ball forward through the center without handing off the ball) and the referees say he fails to cross the plane of the goal line resulting in a turnover on downs. All scores and turnovers are automatically reviewed within the final 2 minutes of the game so there is a pause to review it. The referee states that the ruling on the field "STANDS AS CALLED." This indicates that they do not have indisputable video evidence to reverse the call on the field. Had he said, the ruling on the filed is "CONFIRMED" that would mean that they made the correct call and have the video evidence to prove it. Had they said the ruling on the field is "REVERSED" that would mean that he crossed the plane of the goal line and scored a touchdown. 3. Starting at 18:55 video time: The Bills now have possession of the ball because of the turnover on downs. 1st and ten on their own 1/2 yard line. The Bills snap the ball and the quarterback fumbles it. All the players attempt to gain the possession of the ball. The Vikings recover the fumbled ball in the end zone. This results in a touchdown for the Vikings. Keep up the AWESOME commentary!!

23:05: The NFL actually does have draws. If the score is still tied at the end of the overtime period, then the game is a draw. However, that's only for regular season games. In the playoffs and the Super Bowl, the teams will continue to play as many overtime periods as necessary until there is a winner. The longest game in NFL history occurred in the 1971 NFL playoffs, in which the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins went 7 minutes and 40 seconds into the second overtime period before the Dolphins made the winning score.

You are correct that once the quarterback (or any player) passes the line of scrimmage with the ball he cannot throw a FORWARD pass, but you can throw a lateral or backward pass anytime on the field. If a QB passes the ball after goign past the line of scrimmage it is a penalty, an illegal forward pass, and you lose a down plus you're penalized from the line of scrimmage 10 yards. Its a detrimental play more for the loss of a down than the yardage. Very few penalties include a loss of down, they'll simply lose yards and do the down over.

Btw jefferson made the griddy dance popular. He didnt invent the dance but he brought it to the nfl. And it spread everywhere. Even in soccer. Plus hes the best nfl wide receiver in the nfl. That catch he made is significant because if he doesnt catch that the game is over. The vikings dont have enough time to get the ball back. So it would've been game over. So it is a great catch with so much significance. Plus in ot the first team to score a td the game will be over. If you score a field goal first then the other team could tie it with a field goal. And after that its do or die. Next point wins no matter how they score it. But if the second team scores a td after the first team scores the field goal then the game is over. If the first team scores a field goal and the second team does a turn over then the game is over. Because both team had 1 possession. If both teams dont score in their first possession of the ball then it goes back to first points win the game. Regardless of how the points come. And if time is over after ot then yes the game ends in a tie is they both have the same score of course. I know you hate it. I do too. Obviously not the case in the playoffs. It rarely happens but it does happen a little more then years prior because they decided to change the time in ot feom 15 min to 10 min so that changes things a little. In the playoffs if no one scores in ot then it goes to 2nd ot and so forth until someone scores and wins it.

@@DNReacts There’s also Lamar Jackson. In the 2019 season he beat Michael Vick’s rushing record with 1,206 rushing yards in a single season by a Quarterback. He’s got multiple 1,000 yard season and a couple of seasons that are triple digits. You guys should check out everything on him, not just his running. Justin Fields did get close to Lamar’s rushing records this season so you should definitely check both of them out. Both are dual threat quarterbacks

Turnovers (or losing possession of the ball), are one of the biggest determining factors of winning games. In Rugby, due to the plays never stopping, turnovers happen all the time, and so if turnovers are going to happen anyway why not do riskier plays in order to score. In American Football, due to the plays stopping, there is an opportunity to develop less risky, highly strategic, and perfectly executed plays where you never turn over the ball.

The game ended in a 30 to 30 tie in regulation time. So the game went into Overtime play. In overtime if the team that wins the coin toss and gets the ball first in overtime scores a touchdown, they win. In this case, the Viking won the coin toss and got the ball first. They did not score a touchdown, but they scored a field goal and the Viking had to kick the ball to Buffalo. Now Buffalo gets a chance to score a touchdown or kick a field goal to tie the game. When the Vikings intercepted the Bills pass, that ended the game and overtime play.

At the end there it was only second down for Buffalo. 99.9% of the time the offense likes to use all of its downs trying for a touchdown before doing a field goal on 4th. And in NFL overtime, they each get a chance to score. If one does and the other doesn’t, no matter how much time is left on the OT clock, games over.

At 2:55 when the receiver is "down" and the ball came out that won't be a fumble. As a rule the ground cannot cause a fumble.

If, however, the player with the ball hits the ground due to contact with a defensive player, the play is stopped at that point. In that part of the clip, the Bills player hit the ground from contact with a Vikings defensive playe, and therefor, the play ended before the ball popped out. The ref's were blowing their whistles to let all the players on the field know the play was over so no one would get hurt trying to tackle a dead ball.

Once a player passes the line of scrimmage, he can't pass forward. He can lateral to the side or backwards. If he pass forward, then a yellow flag is thrown and a 15 yard penalty is assessed at where he throws it.

This is why the Vikings were not a legitimate playoff team, most of their wins were within a score or less. This is why the Giants as a 6th seed in the playoffs defeated the Vikings who were the 3 seed. There is only one overtime and if the teams are still tied, the game does end in a tie. When a player has the ball, any forward progress is counted even if they are pushed backwards. Once they are ruled down, if the ball pops out then it's just a dead ball. If a player gets hit on the 20 yard line and is pushed back before they are ruled "down" to the 10 yard line then they will get the ball at the 20.

4th and goal the Vikings didn’t make it so it’s a turnover on downs which means the other team gets the ball at the exact spot the other team didn’t make it. In this case the Vikings didn’t get in the end zone at the 1 yard line which means the bills start their possession at that spot(1 yard line) I think you understood the rules correctly but you didn’t notice the Vikings didn’t have the ball it was the bills who were now on offense. Once you process that you can see clearly that the bills fumbled the ball once they got the ball back and the Vikings recovered the fumble in the end zone which gave them a touchdown.

If you want to see great Quarterbacks who were also great runners, there are a few throughout history who are good examples. Randall Cunningham was the first one who truly threw and ran at a high level. Steve Young came into his own as a passer and runner with the 49ers and is a hall of famer. Mike Vick absolutely revolutionized the position and was a human highlight reel. Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson have been two of the greatest modern examples as well. Josh Allen is a really special talent who is highly athletic and can run through defenders and also has possibly the strongest arm in the league. Running passers are truly a problem for defenses and make the game incredibly entertaining to watch.

Whenever the ball comes out no matter what the team is trained to get it, just in case it might be ruled a fumble. In the midst of the play, the other players don’t necessarily see or know if the player who dropped the ball had possession or was stopped or not. In that case, it doesn’t mean anything that the ball came out because it would not have been “in play” at that point. You’ll see players dive for it anyway a lot of the time, better safe than sorry. Also running quarterbacks are common in the NFL now, you can design your entire offense around the threat of a running quarterback. Lamar Jackson is the best among these types of QB in the NFL currently and won the MVP award a few years ago. The game is becoming more fluid and hybrid in terms of positions - linebackers that function like hybrid cornerbacks, runningbacks that function like hybrid receivers , etc. Players with skill sets that cross over multiple traditional positions are highly valued in todays game.

In a lot of throws, even in college, the quarterback has thrown the ball way before the receiver is done running his route. The ball is being thrown to a specific spot which the quarterback knows the receiver will be at. Back shoulder throws are really like that and impossible to defend...

Yep you guys missed it a little. The Vikings (purple team) had the ball, went for it on 4th down. They failed, so the ball is turned over on downs. That next play, it wasn't the 5th try for the Vikings, the Bills (blue and white team) had the ball 1st down at the 1/2 yard line (had 99 1/2 yards to go the other way). On first down, the Bills quarterback fumbled the snap, and the Vikings recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Far crazier than if the Vikings had scored on offense after many tries, which is what made this crazy ending one of the best games of the year.

@4:40 a QB becomes a runner once he passes the line of scrimmage; he also isn't protected like a QB at that point. He can not do a forward pass. He can still lateral like any other player which is a horizontal or backwards pass.

Here are some of the most common penalties to familiarize yourselves with: Offensive Holding: An offensive player grasps a defensive player with his hands or arms. You're allowed to push, shove, use a closed hand, a forearm, an elbow or your body to block someone but an offensive player is not supposed to grasp them or wrap around them. There are subtle ways around this and in professional football the referees typically allow grasping withing the frame of the body while blocking between the tackles as long as it isn't too obvious or ridiculous. But offensive players trying to protect the quarterback are frequently called for holding because out of desparation they will grasp a defensive player as a last resort. This is is a ten yard penalty and the down is replayed. Defensive holding: Because defensive players can by rule use their hands more freely than offensive players to throw blockers off of them, holding is less commonly called on the defense. But when it is it is usually in the defensive backfield where a safety or cornerback is trying to prevent a receiver from catching the ball or getting to a spot on the field before they do. A defensive player can only hit a receiver once within the first five yards of the line of scrimmage. After that he has to allow him to release and he can only make contact with the receiver when the ball is in the air and reaches the receiver. Restraining a receiver is either defensive holding or illegal use of the hands depending on its severity. This is a 5 yard penalty but an automatic first down.The first down typically hurts the defense more than the loss of yardage. Encroachment / Offsides: This occurs when a defensive player lines up past the line of scrimmage in what is called the neutral zone (an area the width of the football down the whole line of scrimmage) or when a defensive player either accidentally crosses the line of scrimmage and touches a player before the snap of the ball or the defensive player crosses the line of scrimmage without touching an offensive player but cannot get back across the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped. Smart Centers are coached to snap the ball to the quarterback if any defensive player crosses the line of scrimmage to get the easy penalty yards without a play. This is a 5 yard penalty and a replay of the down unless the five yards results in a first down. On 3rd Down and less than 5 yards, offenses will sometimes try to draw the defense offsides with a long or eratic snap count that throws off their timing. Clipping: Hitting defenseless player in the back is called clipping. It is a 15 yard penalty and usually results in a first down. Your helmet must be sufficiently in the front of the body when hitting a player. Illegal procedure: There are a few types of this penalty. The most common type is when the offense moves into the neutral zone before the ball is snapped. It's sort of the offense equivallent of offsides. Illegal Procedure cna also include breaking the huddle with too many players or too many men on the field (more than 11) at the time the ball is snapped. Pass Interference: When the ball is in the air, both the offensive and defensive player have an equal right to try to catch it and some incidental contact takes place, but the defensive player is not allowed to make contact the offensive player before the ball arrives unless both are going for the football. Depending on the spot of the foul it is either 15 yard penalty or the ball is moved to the spot of the foul. This can be one of the most devastating penalties late in the game. Delay of Game: There is a play clock that runs along side the game clock between plays within which time the offense must get to the spot of the next play, call a play in the huddle or at the line of scrimmage, and snap the ball into play. If the play clock runs out before they can do so (regardless of the time on the game clock) it is a delay of game and is a five yard penalty. If the clock is stopped by the referee for an adminsitrative purpose such as reviewing a play or consulting with other referees or for a TV related timeout for advertising, a 25-second play clock is used. Otherwise there is a 40-second play clock from the END of the previous play. This is a recent change as the NFL rules used to require everyone wait until the ball was spotted and the whistle was blown to start a 30 second clock. But this advance actually forces the referees as well as the players to keep a good pace. Personal Fouls: These are always 15 yard penalties or worse. These are usually to protect player safety so they carry a hefty penalty, which can include disqualification from the game. Usually they involve fighting, unnecessary roughness, late hits, targeting (helmet to helmet) of a defenseless player in the open field, roughing the passer (defenseless) or punter / kicker (also defenseless), taunting (sportsmanship), or other similar offenses. Referees have broad latitude in this area. Facemask: Three are two face mask penalties one is five yards and one is fifteen. The five yard penalty is an incidental or accidental hand across the facemask usually during a tackle that dind't involve grasping the mask. The fifteen yard facemask penalty occurs when a player grasp the facemask of another player particularly if the neck is visibly bent. Illegal forward pass: This occurs when a player (usually the quarterback) throws the ball forward after passing the line of scrimmage or throws the ball forward twice from behind the line of scrimmage. It is rare but on occasion a QB will lsoe track of wehre he is on the field and will throw the ball after crossing teh line of scrimmage. Even more rare is when a QB throws the ball forward and it is deflected back to him and he attempts to throw it forward asecond time. In thise circumstance he must either run with the ball, hand the ball off, or make a lateral or reverse throw. No forward pass is allowed. Illegal man down field: On a pass play, the offensive line (the center, two guards and two tackles) cannot go further than two yards forward from the line of scrimmage after the ball is snapped until the quarterback has thrown the ball and it has crossed the line of scrimmage. After that, they can go down field and assist the paly by blocking. However, if they leave early, it is an illegal man down field and a down is lost plus there is a ten yard penalty. "Half the distance to the goal" - If the yardage gained by a penalty would otherwise cause a touchdown, rather than a score occurring as a result of a penalty the rules of the game require the referees to only penalize half the distance to the goal line from either the spot of the foul or the line of scrimmage. This is to prevent referees from deciding the outcome of a game on a minor penalty. Penalty at the end of the game - The game cannot end on a penalty. One more play must occur.

You can only throw the ball forward when you're behind the line of scrimmage (where the play starts). Once the ball passes the LoS then you can only hand or throw it backwards (toward the LoS). IF you run the ball past the LoS and then turn around and run back across the LoS you still may only throw, lateral, or hand off behind you.

The play was whistled dead for one of two reasons: 1) the receiver completed the process of the catch and was downed by a defender, or 2) the receiver did not complete the process of the catch before losing the ball, in which case the pass would be ruled incomplete once the ball touches the ground. (To me it looks like scenario 1.) If the receiver completed the process of the catch and was not down at the time of losing the football, then it would be ruled a fumble and anybody could recover the ball.

The pass would have to be a backwards one not forward and if the teammate doesn’t catch it then it’s a fumble and the other team can grab it and now the other teams offense is on the field and can score. It’s not worth the risk. Take the yards you’ve gained with the catch and don’t pass it off because you might end up just giving the ball back to the other team if your teammate doesn’t catch it. Actually, it IS possible for an NFL game to end in a tie (or "draw") if no one scores in the overtime period -- at least in the regular season. In the playoffs, they will begin a second overtime period if needed (and a third, etc.).

Once the ball carrier is tackled to the ground the play's finished, and the offense maintains possession. If he fumbled the ball before his knee hit the ground, THEN it's a fumble and a live ball.

So.. on the last sequence of regulation, Vikings failed to score on 4 downs, so the possession went over to Buffalo. Buffalo was on offense but fumbled in the endzone and the Vikings defense recovered the ball so it was a defensive touchdown.

The bills didn't try to tie the game because it was 3rd down...they woulda kicked the field goal if it was 4th down. Allen went for the touchdown & got intercepted. Being that both teams had possession in overtime the pick ended the game even tho there was still time left.

Once the football passes the Line Of Scrimmage (LOS/The Blue line on the field) it cannot be passed forward by anyone, however it can be passed backwards or directly parallel to the ball carrier/person possessing the ball, like in Rugby, it is a lateral, but usually only used in rare situations in an NFL game since a missed handling of the ball can result in the other team recovering the ball as a fumble

Overtime rules in the NFL: each team gets 1 possession. Touchdown or safety ends the game, after each team has had possession, it becomes sudden death. College has completely different overtime rules
