Let's face it, how many of Indian rulers were nationalists and fought foreign powers? None of them were patriots, they were after power. Tipu Sultan was not different in that sense, he fought the British to save his kingdom and not for any high-minded patriotism. The fact that he was a zealot cannot be disputed but then so were most rulers across the world. In historical times religion per se was not only a matter of personal faith or belief, it was also a form of 'ideology' that gave divine right to rule often ruthlessly; political ideology as we understand today is a much later phenomenon, an invention of the 19th century. If Tipu called for the help of Durranis of Afghanistan to rid the British, so did Subhas Chandra Bose when he sought help of the Axis forces; the dictum, one's enemy's enemy is a friend still works, as evident in today's politics.
