Breathtaking indeed. This is my first time listening to this difficult concerto. Thank you for the wonderful sound and quality recording.

I've been watching multiple performances of this piece and this one is the most in sync, maybe the amazing video production had something to do with that impression but the whole sound is so cohesive! Amazing amazing rendition, surprisingly soft at some points and wonderfully full strings... just great sound :)

Great video and sound quality Fellini, thanks. I thought it was a solid performance overall. Personally I would have liked longer phrases in the 3rd mov't, esp. in the cadenza. But she seemed to hit all her notes except for some rare misses. This is in the top 2 of my favorite violin concertos, so I usually like all performances of it!

Now I want to know your first one! This is my favourite concerto but I surely don't like most of his performances... just look at how romantic and easy are Perlmann's and Hahn's performances
@fabiomino35062 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I disagree and thought she missed more notes than usual. I didn't quite love her sound either and it felt rushed overall. My favorite recording would definitely be from James Ehnes so maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist haha - I have no complaints for his recording and loved every bit of it.

Fantastic performance. It must be one of the hardest pieces to play. Ms Mullova makes her violin sing beautifully. Oistrach is the place to aim for , where I only think he exceeded her in the 'angrier' bits. Could be that he was born under Stalin, so he really meant it :-)

I'll hear Paavo Jarvi's concert with NHK symphony orchestra next February. I have several versions of this piece, Shoji, MIdori,Hahn and Oistrakh. Paavo Jarvi will be the top conductor of the NHK SO. next autumn. I dream he will record this piece with Shoji.

Thanks for sharing this. While I'm not sure I like Mullova's performance overall, I love the work Jarvi has done with her and the orchestra. A genius conductor, and mostly thanks to him, a fascinating performance, methinks.
@williamgabriel22866 жыл бұрын
While Mullova may have her reasons for taming some of the 'edge', Jarvi seems eager to punctuate it! What moves me about this, however, is the intense energy the Chamber Philharmonic members bring to the music. They're ready to go!

This is an awesome live performance. I slightly prefer Sergey Khachatryan in this work because of his deeper, almost otherworldly connection to it, but Ms. Mullova is superb. These two are my favorite living violinists.

An amazing performance of one of my all time favourites. What a technically challenging piece! Seemed pretty perfect to me. Brought up on the Oistrakh version which probably had a bit more aggression and disdain in it for the Soviet at the time. Fantastic to see it still performed.

I have to say, not how I prefer this concerto performed, however I would expect she would have a better knowledge of how DS would've wanted it performed.. Raw, rough and Russian to the end, and I cannot wait to see her perform this at the Bridgewater hall this Thursday!!!

Absolutely adore Mullova's performance here but I don't care for the metre that Jaavi initiates in the Nocturno. Also the acoustic of the concert hall is very dry and it is mic'd too close. Other than that, superb

Fails to build the requisite tension in the cadenza. Mullova has played this better and the other musicians deserved better.

Great musicians but their interview is disappointing. As primitive as soviet propaganda at the time of Shostakovitch, but with an opposite sign. To believe Paavo, everything was and is in this Concerto about fear. I am from that time. I don't dare to say I "met" Shostakovitch, yet I did, and I saw him, I heard him talking to other composers. But I do not remember any fear. I did not have fear and there was nothing heroic about me. Life and love, and everyday errant were bigger than anything. And even though I'm older than Mulova and Jarvi, I remember a lot of laughter and political jokes. My mother liked them very much. Great composer, my favorite Concerto. As to interpretation, Mulova is somewhat too cold, too mechanical, Oystrach is better, because there is no fear in him! No fear in him while Mullova is still afraid of something. Should be more rough, raw!

I feel a total loneliness for the soloist.The soloist plays wonderful elevated and sublime ideas and around the black down to earth sounds of the orchestra makes it difficult to remain faithful to the freedom of thought, to the delightful thoughts in an environment where the soloist does not feel at home. Sometimes the environment sounds cheerful, but always with something flat. I think it's marvellous performed. What they say about Shostakovitch makes sense to me. But of course some people understand it otherwise. I always think of music as out of competition. The music has to win and not the performers.

I don't like this concerto. Perhaps I don't understand why it's meant to be good. To me it's a not so interesting series of progressions, scales and arpeggios, with a scattering of orchestral accompaniment.
@dsm22407 жыл бұрын
This concerto is about life under Stalin. The 2nd movement is a ridicule of Stalin, and the opening of the next movement is not hard to interpret. The cadenza is DS' anguish under Stalin's rule.
@diegeigergarnele79757 жыл бұрын
I have enough of this bullshit. Shostakovich was a composer and a man, this isn't a history document so stop treating It like that. Music has to be underestood in its own ways, not by quoting the history book. If you want to underestand this concert, just like for any piece that sounds difficult, you have to listen to It more times trying to concentrate on the melodies. Shostakovich based all in his musical career on melodies, he thought than in every piece of music existed themes and melodies. If this concerto still don't gives the feelings it meant you may have to get used to more complex music, start with Mahler symphonies, Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, Schoenberg's first period and Shostakovich's symphonies.
@Skvertven7 жыл бұрын
Dmitry Schostakovich thought about it in the last turn. Paganini is 1000 points ahead. This music reflects his own estate of mind, instead of words he never would be able to tell. Though this is not the best performance, this music is absolutely top and not only among violin concerts.
