Villa de Nil - Renovation Tour by Callebaut Architects

The house was designed in 1935-1936 by Emile De Nil in a modernist architectural style that was strongly influenced by the romantic cubism of the Dutch architect W. M. Dudok and the naval architecture, the so-called packet-boat style. Characteristic of this architectural style are the play on volumes, the cantilevered hipped roofs, built-in flower boxes, round window openings as a reference to portholes, the use of bow-shaped volumes, the application of graphic metalwork, and striking, iconic fireplace volumes that are reminiscent of those of a steamboat.
The building envelope of this striking interwar villa is characterized by the painted polychromy of wood and metal components and by the material polychromy of the construction and finishing materials. The facades are executed in an increasingly rare Cimorné Lavé technique. This technique consists of applying a cement plaster with decorative granules, here natural stone, to the structure and then washing it out so that the granules become visible. This decorative beige plaster is complemented by dark brown glazed ceramic sills, baseboards, roof tiles and window and door frames, as well as decorative metalwork and geometric stained glass. Four main colors were used as the general color scheme for these elements: chocolate brown, beige, mustard yellow and turquoise.
In 2014, the villa underwent a very heavy, disrespectful renovation in which many historical and characteristic elements were removed and the whole was given a white finish coat with PVC joinery and brick gutters. The interior was also almost completely gutted and provided with strongly contrasting finishes with the historic character.
During the current restoration, the original building polychromy of the exterior was restored, as well as all the disappeared elements such as joinery, ironwork and ceramic elements, reconstructed according to the historic model. For the interior, it was decided to preserve the elements that were still present, such as mouldings, curved plasterwork and joinery - with chrome and ebony detailing - and to supplement them with a sober but high-quality new layer. This new layer found its inspiration in the historical use of materials, such as parquet and natural stone, but always with a strong, contemporary simplicity and design where some new eye-catchers were introduced, such as the kitchen by Joseph Dirand in graphic black and white Minolo marble. By entering into this confrontation of old and new in a respectful and integer way, the villa has regained its allure. - Callebaut Architects
