They forgot the very best house of all, Ben Law's in Sussex. All done, by hand, wood coppiced by himself and final cost...12.5k.

The grandest of designs, unfortunately the cost was also far too grand (not just financial either). Purely from a building perspective, a spectacular feat though.

She's definitely drinking the kool-aid though - when Kevin asks if it's too late, having taken 10 years to build and the youngest - youngest! - child being 17, she says "No." Of *course* it's too late. It's OK to admit it's too late. But she just can't bring herself to admit that in the end, the time taken was simply too long for the purpose for which it was supposed to be built. It's delusional.

What a beautiful building in Herefordshire. Such craftsmanship and vision. The couple were lovely, so laid back. In contrast to the last one in Devon which bankrupted it's owner and killed his marriage. That's really sad

Taking ten years to build a home..... and excusing the experience for the family as being 'invaluable' is a very kind way to cover selfishness, in my view. Ten years of stress, going without, disruption and uncertainty..... are not offset in the least by the final product. Vanity run amuck.

I love Kevin M's turn of phrase - it looks like a wooden Scandinavian spaceship has landed. Patrick's home made from shipping containers was a work of genius. The Devon lighthouse was an extraordinary story - it seemed Edward would never finish it, be saddled with an ever increasing debt - all this on top of his marriage ending. But he did finish it - I think the final result was magnificent but he never got to live in it. Overall a big price to pay.

For so many of these homes that cost £1m+ they could install a lift at build that would guarantee the house would be usable for the rest of their natural life (and the lift adds value to the house) for £25k...looks incredibly modern and perfectly safe with little maintenance/running costs (vacuum lifts). It's a huge gap that so many ignore....but they'll happily spend £100k+ on a kitchen...
