Several years ago, a high school in New Jersey, USA presented 'Alien" as a stage play with meticulously constructed costumes and sets made from found materials. Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) herself came to the High school to discuss the stage production and introduce the performance. The student's efforts were truly remarkable.

How do these guys talk like professional film critics? They're like children watching films with wonder and excitement, and then suddenly they are all "The excellent cinematography and attention to detail add to an overall sense of intrigue and suspense." It's like they took a professional film critique class without ever having seen a movie!

They have to be careful because of their beliefs. Their belief, I believe, is that the sun rotates around the earth rather than vice versa. I read that in an article a few years ago. I think they deserve to know the truth but I don't know how flexible that is. It may have changed in the years since I read the article. I always think education and learning new things is good. It's a regular part of my life.
@LittleBlueOwl318

@@ChristaFree Science has disproved the notion and most Muslims these days are progressive and have accepted the facts - it's no longer obligatory that they ascribe to outdated beliefs. The Sun and the Earth still have their places in our solar system, our solar system still has its place in our galaxy and our galaxy still has its place in the universe. The Quran speaks to the bigger picture & of the wonderment and awe of the creation and majesty of ALL of it - a "rotation misconception" hasn't negated or changed the core of their beliefs. Education IS key, but science doesn't trump religion, nor are they mutually exclusive - they go hand in hand.

The young actress in this movie is the same actress who played Grace in Avatar. I forget how old she was in this movie but she was quite young. Love your movie choices! I remember watching this when it came out as a young child. I had nightmares for days and had to sleep with my mother lol. Maybe a comedy next, or an action film. RED or Armageddon or Independence Day (today we'recelebratingour Independence day). All 3 movies are both comedy and action, and all are great movies. Box office hits. Armageddon has the same actor from The Green Mile. It has to do with space too, but in a completely different way. It's a great movie. 5th Element too!

I was attending a seminar in Honolulu with a fellow worker when Alien was first released. The two of us went to see it and were seated right in front of several teenage girls. In the first suspenseful segment when they started searching for the creature, the music started building up and you knew that something frightening was going to happen. When it did, the girls seated behind us let out the most blood-curdling screams I have ever heard. I must have flown 3 feet out of my chair and nearly had a heart attack. I still have nightmares about this movie. As I watched these two men go through the same emotions as I did 44 years ago, I almost flew out of my chair again!

When the person who designed the Alien costume was asked to do so the first thing he reportedly said was: "Bring me bones." And as if the movie itself wasn't already creepy enough there is indeed a real human skull behind the "face part" of the costume. The weird "dome head" is actually partially see-through and there are at least two instances when the hollow eye-sockets of the skull are vaguely visible. In both instances it is very hard to see and personally I never knew it was there until I was told where and when to look. And even then I had to stop the movie and check closely. The first time is when the Alien grabs Dallas. The second time is close to the end of the movie when Ripley looks back at the Alien before she presses the button to open the door.

A true classic. Prometheus (a prequel of sorts) and Alien Isolation (takes place 15 years after this movie) somewhat explain the reason for wanting the Alien for their bio weapons division of The Company (later named Weyland-Yutani). Prometheus was because of Peter Weyland wanting to escape death itself, and trying to find the proverbial fountain of youth. Alien Isolation (Mission 9, which takes place before the game: flashback) somewhat explains that the ship you saw in Alien was broadcasting a distress beacon/warning like they had discovered. The special edition of Alien has Lambert patch the transmission through and it does sound alien (you really don’t make anything out of it). A book (from what’s called the expanded universe) had explained that the transmission was to warn any of the beings from the pilot race (the dead alien in the chair) to not come near the planet as a specimen had broken out of containment, and that those eggs were on their way to be destroyed.

A burial at sea is a very old tradition. Usually a solemn ceremony is held and then the body is simply dumped overboard with weights to send it to the bottom of the ocean. The tradition stems form the simple fact there was no way to store a decomposing body at sea. Today bodies can be preserved with refrigeration and burial at sea is usually performed only at the request of the deceased. Such as old sailors may request a burial at sea as an observance of the tradition.

Absolutely enjoyed your reaction, and your amazement at the special effects, visual effects, was the same as mine when I saw this,..I did not see it the year it came out, there were rules abut underage viewers, you had to have an adult with you, sometimes they'd, the theater was lax, but sometimes they'd actually check your ID, I didn't see Alien, for a couple years, and had forgotten about it until I heard that a sequel, Aliens, was in the works, about to be released, and way into the 1980's, as with you, I was amazed at how these beautiful scapes were done, the planes, the atmosphere, and the special, monster effects, didn't see if it was mentioned, but the cast were not told Kane's chest was gonna burst, all this blood, Ridley Scott, the director wanted a real reaction from them,it worked, Ripley, Sigourney Weaver, the actress said she sometimes would get lost on the set of the movie, the structures, of the inside of the ship were built as big as you see them, actual hallways, ladders leading to rooms,..Scott has a style of building big sets, so happy that this has inspired you to learn more about space,and space travel, young men,..your the next generation, and it's hopeful to hear you say you want to pursue more knowledge of this,...do check out Aliens, the story is not over for Ripley,..its just the beginning,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

Yep, the computer/spacecraft is called "Mother" - I'll try to put it as delicately as I can, but once you catch on to it, the whole movie is a very, very warped, nightmare-logic take on family relationships: the crew's "Mother" is a very cold, distant machine set to self-destruct mode by the end of the movie... the crew hatches from egg-like sleep pods... the shuttles/escape pods are "born" from the mining ship Nostromo... the suspiciously-shaped alien hatches from an egg and almost immediately "impregnates" it's victims by force... that "pregnancy" results in a gory and gruesome birth that kills the "parent"... the android with dubious-looking "blood" tries to kill Ripley by shoving a rolled-up girlie-magazine down her throat... the (rather terrifying) cat Jonesey is treated like Ripley's baby... even Ripley's role was originally written for a man, and the other "female" character Lambert is revealed to have been born biologically male in a blink-and-you-miss it shot of "her" crew profile on a computer screen in the background of one scene. Taken together, it's meant to be weird, disorienting, and... well, alien! The sequels and prequels play around even more with the basic idea, with mixed results: 'Aliens' reveals that Ripley's daughter grew older than Ripley and died during the 57 years Ripley was asleep before ever really getting to be a proper mother, Ripley's "baby" Jonesey the Cat is traded in for a mother/daughter relationship with the weirdly adult-before-her-time Newt before facing off against an alien queen-mother with each defending her children.... An early draft of 'Alien 3', sill vaguely recognizable in the completed movie, was based on the weird mother-child relationship between Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (with a nod toward Snow White's equally strange relationship with her Evil Stepmother and father), and 'Alien Resurrection' is nearly as explicitly about a mother's eugenic solution to the problem of giving birth to unplanned/unwanted monstrous children as a movie of this sort can get. 'Prometheus' uses the creator-creation relationship between androids and humans (and the comparable relationship of the alien "Engineers" to their biological "robot" creations of humans and alien monsters) as a warped metaphor for parenthood, and the android character in that movie even refers directly to his creator as his "father", as the Father-creation relationship extends to a religious metaphor as well via the Easter, Christmas, and other such symbolism. It's an inconsistent and mixed bag of what metaphor or symbolism you get, depending on the movie and its writer, but they all basically hinge on one twisted version of motherhood or another. The surrealist painter whose art inspired the original movie is even more blunt about the subject: the H.R. Giger paintings and sculptures that inspired the movie, as well as the original and film versions of the alien and spacecraft designs by that artist, are mostly "Not Safe For Work" viewing because of their weird, disturbing, and unnatural depictions of nightmarish blends of human, alien, architectural, and mechanical anatomies engaged in abhorrent and grotesque acts of monstrous reproduction (or at least recreation or violence derived from those acts....) The paintings are meticulously detailed and almost beautiful in a way, but make for some really uncomfortable viewing!

The best way to learn about space and planets is to get a telescope. Maybe the channel can buy one for you. The last one I bought cost me only £80, so it's not impossible for the channel to gift it. When you see a planet with your own eye you can feel the extreme distance between objects in space. Find the brightest object in the night sky other than the moon, and it'll be a planet. Point and see for yourself. Just remember our planet is turning fast so you'll only get about 20 seconds to enjoy each glimpse.
