Former dealer here. Table stakes means table stakes and the rules of the game apply to every player during every hand. And if an all-in is declared, that means ~ALL~ of that player's chips are at risk...including all the money that went south in this case, even if it's "just five bucks." Floor person should have been called to clarify and enforce the rule. Love your videos and glad you're back to regular posting! Cheers!

Good point on calling the floor person over. He or she would have likely restated the rule for the entire table to hear, and there probably wouldn't have been as much table talk afterward by the other players. It's surprising to me that anyone would try to defend it. Nobody cares about $5 one way or the other, but we do care about the integrity of the game, and that's only maintained when everyone respects the rules.

Ok dealer, he tips the whites to you then shoves, what do you do then, return them into the pot? I have seen this move 10 times through the years and never has the dealer said no. Once a guy did it for 20 of a 50 shove. I told the dealer later it wasn't right but it is what it is.
@ZeroToPatrick
@ZeroToPatrick 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nikkithedog-t6b Was there verbal declaration of intent before action? If so, that is binding regardless of everything else. But if there is any question or ambiguity as to the intent of a player's actions, a floor person should be called to determine the correct ruling. That's not the dealer's place. Cheers!

That's incorrect bro. It's different everywhere. Just say that's how it was specific to YOUR CASINO. I play at ENCORE in Boston. If you play 2/5 and go all in, and you have 1,004$. You are ONLY ON THE HOOK FOR THE 1,000$. WHITE CHIPS DO NOT PLAY UNLESS THEY ARE INCREMENTS OF 5. If you really were a former dealer, you'd know that every single cardroom is totally different and makes their own rules regarding certain instances. You're a joke lmao

100% on the dealer who never should’ve put you in that position to decide if you wanted to make an issue of it or not. What makes it more galling is that it happened directly in front of the dealer. No way the dealer could’ve missed that happening. And even if it was only like $5 it certainly makes a difference in the long run when you factor in the rake at the lower limit games.

In most 2-5 games the white chips don’t play in all in situations unless it’s exactly $5. If the opponent thought it was less than 5 it makes sense to pull them. Example with Odd number like $9 - $5 goes in, the other $4 doesn’t play. Still shouldn’t pull em, but it’s not that unusual.

This this this this this. Finally. It took me reading a million comments to find this one. Very normal to see players throw change to a dealer when going all in at a 2/5 game. If they had $152, then they go all-in for $150 and throw the $2 to the dealer. The fact that this one happens to be a full $5, means that it should absolutely stay in play. However, the people in these comments and even the video poster are making this into a much bigger deal than it was. “Rules are rules” blah blah blah. Remind me never to play with any of you. You all sound super fun.

I always pull my tip / food chips off the table before a hand if I intend to pay from my stack and to avoid this. When shoe has been on other foot I’ve allowed players to take the tip money out of the all in when they ask. It’s always been a nominal amount and only a rec player would want to do this, so I oblige them
@speakinfaxonly21

Bingo. And that's the key point a lot of people are missing. Pros don't do this. Only a rec would. Why piss off the recs and avoid them giving you action? Letting the few dollars slide could net you more in the future. I'm a long term kinda guy. That's how poker players are supposed to be.

Yeah, I would have let it go. The act was a great tell that he wasn't holding the nuts, and at just $5 it's not worth the drama. In the end, he did have a good reason wanting to tip someone. He should have just asked if you minded, and you would have said no, go ahead. Lesson learned, and you were in the right, but it's one of those things you think about afterward, and say to yourself, nah, I'll probably leave it alone next time. 👍✌

@branchtana315

I'm kind of middle of the road when it comes to the situation with the guy taking money off the table. As it pertains to the rules of the game, you're absolutely correct that you can't "go south" at any point while at the table. This is why in so many rooms if someone racks up and leaves a table, they make the player wait a certain amount of time (generally something in the 1hr range) before the player can come back and start fresh at another table. Obviously this is so people can't use table changes or racking up to be able to take money off the table. Now on the other hand, taking $5 off the table is much different than taking $100 or something substantial off the table. Every room has different rules for this, but the few casinos around me allow players to take money off their stack at any time, whether it be for food, drinks, tips, or whatever. One room I play in allows you to take $15 off your stack, a couple others let you take $20 off. I guess there's still a difference between taking the money off with live cards and without live cards though. So this is why I can understand why the rest of the table didn't like you calling him out. Like I said, you're well within your right to do so, but for such a trivial amount I probably would have leaned towards calling him out in a joking manner so he realizes what he did isn't right, but I ultimately wouldn't have pressed the issue for $5.

Congrats on 100! All are so well done! I think I let the $5 go, very much against the rules. I’d report the dealer as the dealer is the problem, you shouldn’t have to regulate at the table. Also, that’s a super helpful tell, it gave you $, so I’d keep it to myself for the edge in play. Id probably give you $ for a cash game as you are rocking low stakes, not sure about the main event. Great vlog! Casinos obviously allow you to take some money off the table for tips and to pay for food, beverages, massages, etc. Mid-hand, it is an absolute no-no. At many casinos, anything less than $5 does not count towards an all-in bet in a 2/5 game (not sure what the rules are at Jamul). Usually, if the all-in player is going home if he loses, the all-in player pre-tips the dealer the left over amounts. It looks like your opponent may have thought that he had less than the $5 amount when he picked up the remaining amount. Still, he should have confirmed that the amount was not in play, and, if he wanted a good run-out, should have tipped the remainder to the dealer. It is like the high stakes $100-$200 no-limit games where players have $50K to $500K. Frequently, the lowest chip denomination in play is $100 chips. You can sometimes see a stack of $5 chips for tipping. If a person goes all in, usually the $5 chips are not considered in play, even if they total over $100 (despite being “table stakes”). If he’s a pro, he seems like scummy POS. I would definitely call that sneaky shit out. If he’s a recreational player, it’s probably an honest mistake, and I would not say anything (especially if he is a regular donator to the cause). I can’t tell if the comments on the table were from regs or not, but it seemed like they may have been regs that would let it go for the sake of not making recreational play feel embarrassed. Remember, the recs are there for fun. In short, no hoodie, backpack, and headphones, I probably don’t say anything.

You were 100% right about the chips. Like... it doesn't matter how much it is. You can't shove and then go "Oh, but I'm putting these back in my pocket". It doesn't work that way. Like, what if you'd shoved into him? Could he go "Call, but not this $5"? Surely not, right? You've absolutely right, a line has to been drawn and the fairest way for EVERYONE is for the rule to be that you can't take chips off the table while in play. CERTAINLY not in the MIDDLE OF A HAND! That's just so bonkers out of line that I can't believe anyone could disagree. Oh, and "It's personal, but I don't do it"... don't do WHAT?! Does this happen often? People go "Oh, I'll just pocket some chips before shoving" all the time and you intentionally just let it go? Well good for you, mate. Honestly it sounds judgemental as fuck too. It's like he's talking about masturbating to a picture of your own sister. "Oh, it's a personal choice but *I* sure as fuck wouldn't do it". Condescending wanker. And really, if he wants to tip anyone then he can open up his wallet. If those $5 are the difference between being able to tip or not then he shouldn't have put them on the table in the first place. This is just so crazy, I can't believe people were AGAINST you on this. I totally expected you to be like "The table gave the other guy total shit for it" when you started saying that. But no, apparently they live in some really fucked world where you can just say "All-in, except not all". What the fuck.

Awesome videos man. You good on your call for the rest of chips. He didn't say a certain amount, he said all in. That means all of it. Other players need to learn poker rules.

Yes, thems the rules and good on you for pointing it out. Nice catch, however the movie Rounders comes to mind when you catch someone's tell, keep it to yourself and keep it in mind for later...if it was green chips for sure call him out.

I’m with you. Rules are rules. You are definitely not the problem, the guy that took the chips off the table and the dealer not addressing it are the problem. Also anyone that has an issue with you calling him out is part of the problem. You were in the right 100%

White 1 dollar chips usually dont play in an all in and It is very common to let a person that is all in keep a blind for gas or a tip, If you google letting a player keep a chip or 1$ chips don't play in an all in in terms to poker etiquette and you will see its very common and the person didn't do anything that isn't a normal in most cash games.

Btw I love your stuff man! As a 1/3 player myself, I find your vlogs the most relatable and love how you sprinkle in a little bit of humor without detracting from the poker at all! Do u have a discord? I'd love to be part of any community with you in it! Rock on man, Brad Owens has nothing on you 💪💪

If its $5, or $50, you can't take money off the table. If you allow ANY money to be taken off mid hand, that opens the door for someone else to get away with it. Gotta be a line drawn somewhere!

Sorry to say. Watched the video because of title . Anticipating a player going south with a big amount. Ended up only being $5 only. It was pretty petty arguing that. And once he explained himself saying he was gonna tip the waitress. I would of just stayed quiet if I was in your shoes. It's was nothing malice . But hey had it been $500 I would of totally agreed with you.

************* Even 5 bucks on 2-5 game has to play if he went/called All In . If he had 7 or 8 chips, he plays 5 and keeps 2 or 3. I usually just tip it before show down. If he had 4 whites, he could take them with him after showdown. Some poker rooms make you put extra chips ONLY when all in, instead of multiples of $5 chips. **************

Great episode! You can't let bullshit moves slide, period. And yes the dealer should've corrected him immediately unless the dealer didn't see it. As far as the other players berating you for protecting your hand & interest, they're out of line...but now at least you know a bit more about their lack of Honor. Bottom line:. You have a vested interest to Speak Up and must not wait for someone else to do it for you!

You were 100% in the right. It doesn’t matter if he was tipping someone or paying for his mother bills; you don’t take money off the table unless the whole table is okay with it. And for the other players to call you out over it is very discouraging to hear. This means they would do the same thing which is just blasphemous that they think it’s okay

you could have let it go because it’s only 5 bucks but he put you in a tough spot with that jam so i would have mentioned it too just for information 😂 but there’s rules in poker for a reason & that should always be the bottom line.. that other guy should have minded his business & the dealer should have had your back. 100% justified in calling it out. btw havent missed a vlog since you’ve been back keep crushing cato!

You should've probably just let the $5 go. A few one dollar chips in a 2/5? Sometimes someone just wants a few dollars to buy a soda on their way out. Or maybe he thought it was $4... In most 2/5 games, $1 chips that add up to less than $5 don't play. That said, he shouldn't have taken them off the table, you're correct. And if they were for the dealer, he could've EASILY tossed them to the dealer before you acted.
