Year 1912 in Colombia, on the banks of the Magdalena River, where the Christian religion rubbed shoulders with pagan folklore, Indians hard-employed in the mines of a tyrannical and gluttonous general decided to rebel. The love that unites Maria, the head of the village, and Pedro, the bus driver, is put to the test of this agitation, while the cooker Teresa, the mistress of the general freshly arrived from Paris, has eyes only for the emerald necklace that her lover promised her.

This "musical adventure" was written with Wright and Forrest (who would go on to write the scores for KISMET and GRAND HOTEL) and opened on Broadway at the Ziegfeld Theater in 1948. It starred John Raitt. It closed after only 88 performances. The NY Times critic said it was one of the most overpoweringly dull musical dramas of all time (i.e., it had book problems). It received no cast recording because of the Petrillo music strike. (Another victim of the strike: Kurt Weill and Alan Jay Lerner's LOVE LIFE.)
