Villers Bretonneux is just a short train trip east from Amiens in beautiful green fields on a rise overlooking the River Somme valley. Here on the 4th Anzac Day, April 25th 1918, Australian troops from the 13th & 15th Brigades retook the town from occupying German troops who stormed it 24 hours earlier.

50th battalion predominantly South Australians, including my grandfather L/C G C Tozer. The cross of remembrance errected by the men of the 50th at Villers Brett is now enshrined at the State War Memorial, Nth Terrace Adelaide.

The way that this place has even after almost 100 years kept such a strong and unique tie to Australia is just amazing yes we did a lot for them and sacrificed a lot during these battles but it is just so amazing to me how much even little school children have such respect and adoration for Australia it's something I don't think many other nations would do may the friendship between our two nations remain this way forever 🇦🇺🇫🇷

@Dexters Bars I think our relationship with France will be just fine Australia did do the dirty on France and I don’t blame them for being angry about it but for Australia nuclear subs are the best option so Australia did what was good for it I’m sure we will come to an agreement with France to compensate them for it

You are close to the mark. Its the one town in France that truly honours the sacrifice of those brave Australian men (and women - their nurses). I do not know any Australian who does not come away from VB without a new found respect for the town and its people. The school visit brought tears to the eyes (both in 2008 and again 2017). Lets We Forget.

Hi - on behalf of the relatives and friends of the 52nd Battalion AIF thank you for the tribute you pay to the men of the 52nd Battalion and the other battalions of the 13th Brigade which attacked on time at 10.10PM to the south side of VB on the evening of 24 April 1918. Criticisms - you credit the 15th who attacked two hours late with attacking across ground with which they were unfamiliar - this in incorrect as it was the 13th which attacked in the dark, across unfamiliar ground without artillery support. The 15th were very familiar with the ground around VB having been based there for days. Also you forgot to mention the small number of South Australians fighting with the Queenslanders and Tasmanians of the 52nd that night. They deserve to be remembered as well!

You forgot to mention the '1st Battle of Villers-Bretonneux' which started on 30th March 1918 with the 33rd Battalion attack on Hangard Wood (to the south of VB) and then the heroic Defence of VB by the 9th Australian Brigade on the 4th of April 1918 (which included the courageous counter-attack by the 36th Battalion AIF) which stopped the German Drive toward Amiens. The 9th Brigade successfully defended VB up until the 18th April. VB was only taken by the Germans after the Australian Force had been relieved from the line by tired English troops on about the 19th of April.
