Villiers Midget update #6 Coil replacement

Even more workshop ramblings as I attempt to replace the dead coil on my ATCO-Villiers engine with a cheap Taiwanese reproduction. These are currently being sold on ebay (UK) for just £18.85 including postage - it had to be worth a try at that price!

If Im honest Im not a fan of long videos myself, however I have just sat through every min of this without fast forwarding, which can only mean you held my attention. Congratulations on not only succeeding in doing that but also entertaining & educating me at the same time. I've never had a spark problem with any of my Atco's but now I know the full ins & outs I will know exactly what to do. Excellent all round video Nigel, great narration too, thoroughly enjoyed it. As for the engine, Wow..!!!

I just want to say thank you to enpeemac. The old Villiers equipped 1959 Pace lawn mower is back in action. I sourced one of those Taiwanese coils as recommended and all is well. Again, thank you.

I think the reputation is unfair, just most of these engines have been neglected and are just becoming popular with collctors, of course the coils have not been replaced! Real shame that one went, just as you got it finished. Glad it's all back working now, the engine sound much better and looks stunning. I have used those cheap repro coils and they seem ok, got my Mk12 going though.

Mine too I am up grading my Seagull to wipac ignition system. Been told it's the most reliable way to go. I do like the villers engine's. Been told that it's common to break down inside. I have been told that there is a man in UK that makes them. But as you say rather expensive way to go.👍

@MrSiner09 There's a few reasons why you could be getting contact between the flywheel and the ears. If you've had the engine apart, first make sure the backplate is fitted fully home and the ears are refitted in their original locations - there's a very small amount of adjustment if you slacken the screws. Finally, your problem could be caused by excessively worn main bearings/bushings. Note that very, very light contact between the magnets and the ears shouldn't affect the spark.

You can also buy coils for villers engines from green spark plug company. There is two coils the longer coils have a smaller pick up shaft through center of coil.

@MO3MINI It's really just a case of measuring what you have and comparing to what's available. The two versions (long and short) which are available as cheap Taiwanese copies on ebay are also listed on the 'Green Spark Plug Co' site. If you look on there you can find detailed dimensions of these and work out if either will fit your engine. I'm sure one of these can be made to work on most Villiers applications.

Many thanks. Fantastic video! I've just done the same as-per your super video on my atco-villiers midget 2 stroke. But I can't get a spark.. any ideas?? I've tested and for good continuity all the way to the plug. Using a new D16 plug with gap at .018".. Measuring 5k ohms on the new coil. Still no spark.. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

The points are in the primary coil circuit, whereas I was testing the secondary. It's a bit too much to explain here but there's loads on the internet if you want to learn more.

An old post I know, but you bought the wrong coil. It's not too short, but merely a shorter one. There are afew different sizes available and all better than a 50 year old "Genuine" coil. Great mower as well.

Thanks for all your vid. I now have 2 acto engines and did have problems with the coil on one of them. even the new one did not work but OK now. I have a request to make of you, could you show in a vid. how you are able to make all the aluminium parts so bright and shiny. Yes it must be lots of hard work but I would like to see how you do it.,,,, thanks.

@loueedafly A 'little' play will be fine, just don't go revving its nuts off and make sure you keep the oil ratio up :-)

Great videos. That engine looks really nice. Is it just a question of undoing the centre nut to remove the flywheel? I have a Ransomes mower with I believe a Midget mark 2 engine.

Hi; great video; but could you explain how you remove the flywheel. How do you remove the kick start sprocket. Mine seems to be the same as yours; i.e. Atco mower. Many thanks, john

Hey mate, I have one of these little engines, and heard they are a great little engine. When i got mine it was missing the points setup, and only had the coil. The coil looks pretty rugged so i will order one off ebay. I purchased an electronic ignition conversion for small engines to replace the points but i have one problem. I can only find one timing mark, on the flywheel. I need to know where the other is located. Thanks for any help :)

@enpeemac Sweet, thanks alot man, also, do you know if it alright to have a little play where the con rod connects to the crank pin? I took mine to pieces today to clean it all up and put new gaskets in it a found there was some play...

@loueedafly Hi, take a look at my video "Villiers Midget project - update #3", where I show how I set the timing on mine. I have read however that some models don't have the mark on the backplate and on these you align the flywheel mark with the notch on the end of the crankshaft. HTH

My 1959 Pace lawnmower with Villiers Midget power has failed to proceed. No spark. As per your instructions I checked the coil. Reading 2900 ohms. Would you say this is insufficient? I am going to order a coil of Evilbay anyway. The one in my old girl is 65mm long. This was my parent’s first mower. I want to get it going again.

2900 seem a bit low you may have shorted turns I have just fitted a new coil that was 3700 ohms even tat seems a bit low It cane from Villiers parts it was the M1013 a long Coil with a 9/16 core but this was on a 11C engine
