Viltrox 16mm F1.8 Is Not Compact But Excellent!

Why do you call this lens "super wide" Its a standard 24mm on a crop sensor. Its The cinema standard wide, because it does not visibly distort.

Of course if you crop it becomes something else, like all lenses😀 If you crop enough it becomes a tele photo😀

Hi Matti. Thank you for the review! Hi Scott. Quick question, I got this lens and can't get a pc or mac to see it (I tried different wires). I am concerned that I won't be able to connect for firmware like I do my other Viltrox lenses. Have you had this issue? Thx. Keep up the great work

Does the dynamic stabilisation work well on this lens, considering it isn't a native Sony lens? - Are you getting gimbal like smoothness when vlogging?

I have not tried vlogging on this lens, but without gimbal you'll not get gimbal like smoothness on any Sony mirrorless camera.

@@mattisulanto Apparently not if you look at some tests on the ZV-E1 with dynamic stabe with native Sony lenses, I was just wondering if it's as good with this non native lens.

Amazong lens- All metal and outstanding picture qua;it and rivals the sny 14mm except Sony is lighter but 16mm Viltrox is better built in my opiniion.

I have only one Sony A7IV which I use for video in the studio and for photography when I need FF. If I'm making videos outside I use a Gopro or the Sony ZV-1.

I don't shoot full frame, but do use viltrox lenses on APSC mount, they really produce excellent quality lenses and i think we should be grateful to them for making affordable high quality lenses. Nice review.

@@mattisulanto Viltrox didn’t disable AF on APS-C bodies for this lens, right? I mean it says Sony E mount in the specs and I can’t see a specific list of compatible cameras anywhere… did I miss something?

My copy of this lens arrived with faulty AF out of the box and I am returning it for a refund. Not a good first impression of Viltrox.

Over the years I have had or seen faulty lenses from almost all manufacturers. Of course it's always a bad first impression when that happens, but it could have been any brand lens.

@@mattisulanto I guess. I have well over 50 lenses the only ones that arrived somewhat imperfect are the ones I bought used. Never had a bad new Nikkor, Leica or Sony lens out of the box… 🤷‍♂️ And it’s a real hassle returning stuff to an Amazon seller in Australia. This lens came from the distributor and honestly I’m shocked it should never have left the factory. Testing it further the custom buttons don’t work either (probably related to the faulty AF) the MF and aperture ring work as intended though.

Hi, I have the Sony 14mm 1.8 GM which have better optical image quality and built quality than the Viltrox, Sony 14mm is also lighter and a bit more compact, but I still want a more compact Lens, I do not need either autofocus (I use manual focus 99.99% of the time !) or a large aperture, so I will maybe get fx a Voigtländer 15mm 4.5 Super Wide Heliar Aspherical III or similar Lens so I do not have to carry too much and too heavy gear.

Your Sony is a different lens 14mm vs 16mm and it’s also almost three times more expensive so it better be good😀

@@mattisulanto A14mm is more difficult to do the Lens design and it is even harder with a 1.8 aperture, A 16mm 1.8 should have been more compact the Sony 14mm 1.8, but we do know that Sony is very good to make Lenses compact compared to other brands. I hope for more new Lenses in every focal length with the best possible image quality, but they should be compact and not just with a large aperture, I have never used the 14mm at aperture 1.8 and I think I never will, not even for night photography, I am old school and still uses tripod some times.
