Viltrox 35mm F1.8Z Lens | Nikon Alternative?

My first impressions of the Viltrox 35mm lens for Nikon's Z mount. Is it a good alternative to Nikon's version? Spoiler- I think it is!!

The 85 is ridiculously sharp, fast to focus and great color. Ive used with people, landscapes and night street photography with great results. EBay new can be less $, as always read sellers reviews.

Great video! Very helpful content. I might need to check this out, I’d like to get a fast prime in this range. I just purchased the 14-30, haven’t used it much. Seems just as sharp as the 24-70 f4. I keep waiting for Sigma and Tamron to come out.

The first Viltrox lens that I purchased for my Z6 MKII is the new 28mm, I only use my cameras for photography so I can't say how it works for video, I brought a Fujifilm XT5 with the 13mm and the Nikon with the 28mm to shoot at the Gomez mill house in the Hudson valley of New York state, both worked well but the 28 mm was a better focal length to photograph than location. The 13 mm works well when you have a wider location to photograph.

This is a really tempting lens even though I have the Nikon 14-30 and 24-70. I like primes and have the Viltrox 85 for my Z6. Also, I liked the separation from the background in the vlog using the 35 and Z6ii.

Viltrox is a saving grace for those of us who are Fuji users due to budget. They are the only company until recently who offer AF lenses for the Fuji system at a reasonable price. I have this lens in the Fuji mount and love it! I got my version as a used version, so it was an even better bargain.

And since you made this video, Viltrox has added a 16 mm f1.8, 20 mm f2.8 and a 40 mm f2.5 and a 50 mm f1.8 for FF Z cameras. I have the 16mm, the 20 mm and the 85mm f1.8 and am very happy with all of them. The price points don't hurt, either. :-)

Great review Bill the video quality was excellent I'm all for third party lenses that can save you a lot of money the only Nikon lens I have is my old Nikon 35mm f1.8 G which works well on the D750 looking forward to the waterfall video thanks as always.

Another great video Bill! The results look really impressive. I’ve read that there’s some kind of agreement between Canon, Nikon, and the major third party lens manufacturers, Sigma and Tamron specifically, to allow Nikon and Canon to fill out there lens lineups before they start producing lenses for the Z and RF mounts. I’m not sure if that’s true or just a rumor. But at a recent interview with the head of Sigma, no one asked the million solar question. So everyone is wondering if there was some kind of agreement that question was off the table… for now. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I’ve already made the investment in the Nikon version of those three focal lengths: 35mm f/1.8S, 50mm f/1.2S, and 85mm f/1.8S.

I have been eyeing these, I really am hopeful that Sigma comes out with something soon. My 18-35 Sigma Art was my favourite lens and it’s just not the same adapted (it’s great adapted for video though. I’d love to Viltrox come out with a 24-70.

Just wish they charged a little more and weather sealed it as the Z bodies are very well sealed so l like to take advantage of that fact.

Bill, I currently own the Z50. This may be the solution for low light video's and photo's. How was the AF on this lens, similar to Nikon prime lens?

I’m happy that people are enjoying second part lenses like the viltrox, but for my experience I’ll never buy again a sigma, tamron, viltrox or any other lens for my nikon cameras that’s not a nikon, just cause it’s something you carry for life and you always want to get what you really trust and really deliver what you need. I tested on my z camera a second part lens, and even beeing ok, I felt the difference so clear, specially in harsh conditions, like low light and color quality on bright light..at least as a professional, I just always go for nikon!

I know Viltrox do a 23mm f1.4 for Canon EOS M Cameras, maybe you can ask them to lend you one and see how it goes.
