Viltrox 85mm F1.8 | Best Value 85 for the RF

I have the Yongnuo 85 f1.8 RF and so far it's been fantastic. Snappy auto focus. Control ring is added bonus along with weather gasket. But this Viltrox looks great also! Great review Mitch and excellent photos!

I have the exact same lens for Fuji (which is equivalent to a 130mm lens, roughly) and it really is one of my all time favourite. Sharp, affordable (especially compared to the Fuji 90mm F2), and it feels quality. Also, there is a reason why it appears as an EF lens : Canon has not opened the 3rd party lens manufactures to the RF mount yet, so they have to find a workaround to still be able to do lenses. Viltrox has an EF adapter for pretty much every camera company (Sony, Fuji, Canon etc) so what they basically did is simply strap the adapter PCB to the lens to be able to control it as if it was an EF 85 strapped to an adapter. I don't know if Canon gave Viltrox the rights to do it, or if they just reversed engineered it, but hey it works. My 85 for Fuji also appears as EF glass in lightroom

Hey Mitch! Love the video, however I just heard you can find a firmware update on the Chinese website for the Viltrox lens allowing it to achieve an Aperture of 1.6!!! Could you please review this? I hear you do have to do both a firmware update and a calibration after the firmware update but it truly will read at 1.6 once done. 😇

While I agree with most of what was said, one thing that I think was missing in the review was flare resistance. I'm a portrait shooter and I love shooting with the subject's back to the sun. I generally use Canon L or Sigma Art lenses and they have very strong flare resistance when light directly hits the front element of the lens. I found with the Viltrox it reacted very badly when sunlight hit the front element, obscuring the face of my subjects. I had to find shade to stand in or just abandon that type of shot. I think for a fair test of use with this lens, the downside of flaring needs to be discussed. If you shoot indoors this lens is fantastic, but for golden hour or other daylight shots, there are challenges that you face with this lens that you don't face with the more premium lenses.

I considered this lens but went for the Canon EF 85mm 1.4 IS USM with the adapter. AF is very quick and I love that it's stabilized. Any reason you went with the 1.8 Viltrox instead? I know you shoot with the Tamron 35 1.4 with the adapter :)

Hi Mitch... I am R6 shooter also. As Canon has policy of not allowing 3rd party lens for the RF mount, what will be the impact of purchasing this Viltrox lens now for my R6? Will it still work seamlessly or whether the new firmware in R6 will make this lens not functioning? Thanks!

I actually preferred the yonguno 85. I tested both side by side and the benefits the yonguno provided we're just way more with it. Maybe I got a bad viltrox copy the yonguno is way lighter had faster af and slightly better sharpness and the control ring is just a bonus and since i ordered both of them on black Friday the yonguno was actually $50 cheaper lol

The SECOND update was 12-22-2021 1.0.8. I am looking at their website where they are both listed so not sure what you were looking at.

I have the Viltrox and the Samyang 1.4 I found the Samyang on eBay for $350 shipped in mint condition. It’s wonderful. So wonderful I bought the 35 1.4 also and have the new 50 1.4 mkii on order. I paid $400 for the Viltrox new and will put it up for sale.

I have the Viltrox 85 1.8 mki AF It’s heavy but sharp. I picked up the Samyang 85 1.4 for $350 on eBay and I’ll never look back at another 1.8 again. The separation is just incredible and I absolutely loved the Viltrox. My favorite lens until the new Sony 1.2 GM comes out.

samyang RF 85f1.4 builds better, af faster, 2/3 stop brighter, weather sealing better, roughly same weight, length and price. Why bother with Chinese copy of 85f1.8?
