I wrote under this video when it was published before, so will repeat. I think Chris is too harsh on this lens is his final judgement. I have seen many of his reviews for lenses with the similar or worse image quality where his final conclusion would be "still good value for money". In this case I do not see any major flaws that would prevent me from buying this lens at this price point. Especially considering the quality of the previous offerings from Viltrox.

I bought this little lens August 2024 for 220€ from Viltrox. A real good bargain. Autofocus in normal conditions to medium low light with high contrast is good. Sharpness is rather underwhelming in comparison to some vintage lenses. But I it's understandable for this price. Most annoying thing is that auto for aperture is easily misadjusted by accident, so that it's between auto and 22.

The G is better in IQ from the samples shown, but costs 50% more ($599USD). Sigma's 24/3.5 is also available for $549. The Viltrox competes directly against the Samyang 24/2.8 which is slightly cheaper, much smaller and shares similar optical issues.

I think they've made significant improvements in handling chromatic aberration. Their previous lens had plenty of CA in the corners even when stopped down to f/4+. In this lens it's barely visible even at f/1.8. I can also see sharpness has improved a little bit...

According to me they should produce slower ones (F2.8) with better quality in the angles for half of the price. When you say 450 $ is cheap… yes if you compare it to the unaffordable GM Sony lenses , but it s still a f… amount of money for a fixed lens :(.
@ronjenkins42573 жыл бұрын
Have you considered **also** showing images with software / in-camera image corrections applied? Ultimately, users will probably use those corrections if they're available, and how well they work (if used by a photographer) must make part of a buying decision; in some senses correction software is as much a part of the "lens package" as is hardware. (Indeed, one day we might see lenses with software built-in to perform image corrections, rather than seeing lens image correction being done in-camera or in post-processing. Should that day come, the distinction between software and hardware will become purely semantic. Already in fact, one appraises a lens's autofocus performance as good or bad, but that assessment assumes a great deal in positing that the focusing performance is unconnected to the camera.) Leaving aside user-created correction files, seeing the potential of a lens assisted by available software best reflects the lens's abilities.
