Great review as always. 👌 the issues you mention are probably mostly down to the fact that it is a reversed engineered lens. The camera sometimes doesnt want to cooperate. I think these issues could be partly resolved with a firmware upgrade but I would advice everyone to wait a bit for more 3rd party af lenses to be released. Fuji opened their x mount protocol to more established and experienced makers
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
Hi Xristos! You are absolutely 100% correct. In fact, I wish I had mentioned the part about the reverse engineering more in the video. I did mention it in the review of the 85 mm but it definitely would've been helpful to have also mentioned it in this video. For what it's worth, they did release a firmware upgrade a few days ago that resolved the major issue that I was having with the aperture jump. I was pretty surprised that they were able to get this done so quickly. And thank you for your kind words! I hope all is well…

uh i think the brightness is stepping like that is due to auto ISO stepping up. i don’t think it’s due to “the lens is halfway between fully manual and electronic” the camera still has to step up ISO regardless of how the aperture is being changed. some manufacturers just do this smoother than others

If I can get the 35 f2 and the viltrox for the same price, do you consider the fuji is the clear winner? Andrew's video compares light transmission and there's not a full stop difference when open the viltrox at 1.4, that for me was the biggest sell of the viltrox over the fuji.

Hi Eduardo! Yes, if they are the same price I would go with the Fuji. There's definitely not a much of a difference with f/1.4 vs. f/2 between the two and as you can see with my tests, the bokeh I think is more pleasing with the Fuji anyway even at F2.

Great review, thanks! Couple questions - how would you compare the overall characteristics of the 33mm and 35 f2 in terms of shooting wide open? I'm asking because from what I see the "1.4" opening on Viltrox seems a little bit exagerrated and in terms of subject isolation looks closer to 1.8 or 2.0 to me. Also can you see the one stop difference in exposure between these two wide open?
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
Hi Pawel, great questions. I do not see a one-stop difference in exposure between these two lenses wide open. I see less than one stop. In other words, I don't believe you are getting one complete full stop of light more with the Viltrox. You do get more light for sure, but just not on full stop. I would not recommend this lens if you are purely looking for that extra wide aperture. The f/2 .0 is more than enough for subject isolation. Rather, the main reason for this lens would be to get into a 33 mm prime at the reduced cost of it being a third-party lens.

Thanks for the review and the following firmware update video! I'm not so sure that I'll purchase the Viltrox anymore. The clickless aperture ring now seems more like a gimmick than something actually useful for video shooters. And I've seen others say that the light gathering capacity isn't actually a full stop brighter than the Fujifilm f2 version, do you have any experience with that? If that's the case, I might as well go with the xc35mm. Smaller and cheaper.
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's a solution for sure. I'm reviewing the Viltrox 23 now and it also has the clickless ring... it seems lens manufacturers are pushing that as a feature to reduce click sounds during video aperture changes. Honestly, I see about the same level of light between this lens and the f/2 version from Fuji. Not that noticeable.

Hi Chris, I have question which I think you might be able to help me, again :) I am doing multi-cam video's. Just done one with 2 Fuji's shooting in 4k (to Ninja V's/ssd) 1 over head camera in 1080 to SD card, 1 Nikon in 1080 to QXD card and Go pro in Linear view at 1080. All imported to FCPx and a multi-cam made, the New Project created on 1080 timeline. Have I lost the 4k resolution of the 2 4 k camera clips? (Planned on cutting in and transforming those shots) Should I have made a 4k timeline instead, then edited, then EXPORT as 1080 (I made a preset called KZbin 1080 which shrinks project) I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance.
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lawrence, yeah I believe you need to have a 4K timeline for that. Could you try creating another project in 4K, then copy paste whatever edits you have made over into that new projects timeline? I think I'm understanding you correctly but would need to see a little more details to be sure. Either way, if the project is 1080 then if you are going and exporting to 4K you would be upscaling which is far worse than the reverse.
@laurencegrant28824 жыл бұрын
@@pal2tech I'm reading that a 1080 timeline with 4k clips 'should' be better as there is 4x more data in the clip? I would rarely export anything in 4k from FCPx as usually its going to YT. Its just in the inspection box the 4k clips don't mention that are 4k, but if I made a standard, none Multicam project they do show as 4K. Hey isn't video tricky? It leaves photography in the dust!

Appreciated the review! How is the AF during video? I recently purchased the XC 35 f2 and found the AF during video to be very jumpy and rather jarring. I might be interested in the Viltrox for the 1.4 and possible better AF during video. Thanks!
@RockyColaFizz4 жыл бұрын
C Rankin hi. I have both the Viltrox 33 1.4 and the 35 f2. The Viltrox is much snappier to focus in video, without nearly as much of the focus pulsing you see when the 35 f2 first acquires focus. You can slow down the AF speed for the 35 f2 though so focus racks less jarringly. I have found that no matter what focus speed you use on the camera the Viltrox always stays the same and snaps to focus instantly. But it’s not jarring, just fast. Also, the 35mm f2 is dead silent when focusing, but you can hear the Viltrox focus in video, even with a shotgun mic like a Rode. However it’s just barely audible. Nothing as loud as like the 1.4 Fuji Primes. So, if the 35mm f2 was a zero on the noise scale, and the Fuji 1.4 Primes were a 10, the Viltrox focus noise is a 2. Hope that helps.
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
Overall I found the autofocus to be fine. Not incredible but not bad either. Keep in mind that I probably would never use a lens like this for professional video and instead would simply pull focus on a manual cine lens but if you needed autofocus for video I don't see any problem with this lens and it seemed to handle quite well in my tests.

what would you recommend for video shooting; the viltorx 33mm f1,4 or the fuji 35mm f2? best regards Claus
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
Hi Claus, that's a really good question. Video shooting is a completely different set of requirements and neither lens has optical image stabilization which is very important for video. The #1 question I have for you is: are you using an X-T3 or would it be for an X-T4? If it is in X-T4, then I would consider the Viltrox 33 mm because you have a slightly wider angle field-of-view and you'd save some cash. If you have an X-T3, then the decision becomes a lot more difficult because how are you going to stabilize the lens? If you have a gimbal, then either lens would work fine and I would probably in that case suggest the Fuji if you can afford the extra cash. If not, the Viltrox is fine because the autofocus works very well on that lens as well. Remember though that with shooting video you really would not be using autofocus much on a number of projects. Again, all this depends on your shooting style, whether it is paid or hobby, the type of shots you are trying to get, and so forth. Overall, for video shooting, I still believe the single best lens you can use on the Fuji film camera considering the price, ease of use, reliability, image quality, is the 18-55, especially because of the OIS. I made a video about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGrPY5iwequUo7c. Don't laugh though, it was one of my first videos when I was just getting started so the quality is kind of bad. However, I still stand by all of the information in that video and think that would actually be the best lens you could use for video.

Hi Toby, believe it or not I am not sure! It was the bottom of one of my gimbals (the DJI one for the smartphone I think) and I believe I had taken it from a different gimbal a long time ago. It is not a tripod per se but a simple little cheap accessory that came bundled with a gimbal that allowed you to balance the gimbal while holding it upright so you would not have to hold the gimbal in your hand. I simply unscrewed it from the gimbal since I didn't use it and use it for the demo. I looked at it just now and it does not have any markings nor does it have any information written on it whatsoever as to the make or model number or even brand. So, I guess it's called the "Mystery Gimbal Thing" and it may be the only one on planet Earth!

Hey Chris, thanks for this review, a fantastic one as always!! Completely out of of the subject, I'd love you to do a video on this subject: I have an X-T3, a Godox V860II and the X-ProF trigger. It happens to me that when I'm shooting in complete darkness, or in darkness because I want a fast aperture and low ISO and rely just on the flash, with the TTL function ON, I need the camera's LED light to help me frame, but the behaviour of the camera is really weird.... I have the AF Illuminator function ON in the menu, but most of the time I have to frame by intuition, or do a couple of 'blind' shots to know exactly where to frame.... I've tried both options with the X-ProF light (side of the trigger light OFF and ON, beside the ON button/click), and going to the camera's flash menu to try different options with the led light, but no solid results, most of the time shooting 'blindly'.... Have to say that the last 2 options in the camera's flash menu (Master Setting & Channel Setting) are always non-available, but that must be because I'm shooting TTL, but depending on the X-ProF's light click is ON or OFF, the camera lets me choose or not the behaviour of the led ligth.... Do I miss something?? Or it's just my camera's led light that doesn't work correctly?? Many Thanks!!

Hi there. Question, is it that you simply can't see the scene in the viewfinder? It's too dark? That is an easy fix where you can go into the menu settings and turn off preview exposure in white balance and you will get your view back. Or am I missing the issue altogether?

Really great review, thanks! Never heard of Viltrox lenses and kind of surprised that we (in Russia) make lenses for Fujifilm X mount. About newspaper: woah, this is truly piece of history, issue is for June 29, 1988 (Wednesday). Actually it would be really great, if you could scan a few pages and maybe leave a link to Google Drive or some kind of storage. I really would like to read, what was writted in 1988 - this was a time of reconstruction (perestroika if you will) of Soviet Union and so for dramastic changes.

Love the way you review. Good review I was thingking about getting the viltrox 33. I don't know this lens is good sharpness and quality options on old body (Fuji XE2 + fuji 23mmf2). Should I upgrade body to XT2 (my budget)?
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You don't need to upgrade camera to get benefits of lens. Mostly for benefits of AF. Sharpness and quality should be very similar.

One question: I shoot with the XT-3 using the histogram so before shooting I decide the shutter speed, etc. and I focus manual or with the back button But when I hold the shutter button the histogram changes and for example the photo becomes overexposed. Does anyone know why the histogram changes?
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure offhand. I would need more information as to what the specific settings are on your camera. Remember that the histogram is live, meaning that it changes based on the exposure data from the camera. Check your screen settings as well - do you have it set to preview exposure/white balance?

How does it compare with XF35 F1.4 in terms of image quality?
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
Hi Wen, I actually do not own the f/1.4 Fuji. I only own the f/2.0 which is what I used to test. But honestly, I would assume that the Fuji would have better image quality overall at that aperture - but keep in mind that it is certainly a lot more expensive. You always have to factor in price when doing comparisons, particularly when the cost difference is significant.
@JoeMcGuire4 жыл бұрын
I had the Fuji 1.4.. Had.. I had it a couple weeks and sold it on for a minor loss and got the f2 instead. The image quality on the 1.4 is tough to beat - when focus is bang on, but I can all but guarantee that the focus on the Viltrox will be far better than the Fuji.

🤯Viltrox sent me this on 5/14/2020 after ordering the Viltrox 33mm on 4/27: Kind Reminder for Fujifilm X-PRO3 Users : First of all, we apologize for comfirming this problem late after your purchase. If you are Fujifilm X-PRO3 users and purchase Viltrox lens especially for the X-PRO3 camera, for the sake of your camera, we would like to suggest you not use Viltrox 23mm, 33mm or 85mm X-mount lens onto Fujifilm X-PRO3 model in case it will damage the lens release button of your camera. This is because the location of X-Pro3 is a bit different from other Fujifilm cameras, and our lens were designed and set production before the release of X-PRO3. So due to some bit structural difference, they are not fully compatible with Fuji X-PRO3 on structure though performance is not effectted anymore. We really apologize for any inconvenience caused ! If you are X-Pro3 owner and want to return the lens, we will accept that and proceed for you. BTW, there is no problem on other camera models. They can work perfectly on Fuji X-T3 and X-T4.

Great review Chris as usual. I have the 35mm Fuji f2 and it is one of my favourite primes, very sharp and great for wandering around streets. I would rather pay the extra $130 and stick with Fuji but understand that some may have budget constrictions. I do like the grey bag with the Viltrox, would that be enough to make me trade down to Viltrox, probably not !
@pal2tech4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tony! Yeah, gotta love that gray bag, LOL. It's so funny because obviously it is going to do nothing whatsoever to protect the lens. Fuji has those black ones that are even thinner. But yeah, there's a good argument to be made for paying the extra $130 for the Fuji lens.

Hey Adson!!! First off, a major shoutout to Brazil. I love that country and have spent some time in both Manaus, Belem, and Rio. And about a week or so down the Amazon. One day I would love to go back. Yes, the 33 mm is a great lens - and the latest firmware update seems to have solved the primary issue that I had with it regarding the aperture shifting. Viltrox has been quite responsive with their firmware upgrade so in all cases I think this is a great budget prime lens to consider. Take care buddy!!!
