I have noticed that American audiences in particular have a difficult time choosing between MJ and Prince. It would be interesting to see what people from other countries would be inclined to say. Personally I never really understood this comparison. Michael and Prince are so different from one another. Their levels of influence and impact on the industry are also quite different. I feel that Michael was overall a more well rounded artist as well as the most globally known artist. He was a multifaceted performer, whereas Prince was more focused on the musician aspect. Both were incredible artists and legends in their own right. However, Michael's impact on the industry as a whole is undeniable and has never been done to that extent by any other artist.

as someone who is not from America, I can say that Michael is a no brained answer. Many people I know have no idea who Prince is. Prince is good , yes, but his reach was mainly limited to the American audience. Michael was global. Everyone everywhere knows him. I actually don’t know a single person who doesn’t know who Michael Jackson is. Even 6 year olds know who he is. I chanced upon a bunch of them dancing to him a few days ago actually haha. My respect for Prince in ever sense. He was an amazing entertainer. He played many instruments, and made awesome music. Although I have to be honest, I probably knew 2 o 3 songs until he died. Now i know and like about 5 or 6, but that's it. With Michael it's different. He didn't play many instruments but his influence is not only in music, but in videos, in fashion in everything.. During the 80s, you either wanted to be MJ or wanted to have him. There are people in areas in Africa or in Asia or South America without internet who knows who MJ is. But they don't even know who Prince is. So 🤷🏻‍♀️

His revolution in the music industry is legendary and will never die. But ,with those albums,Michael did hit his peak. After that,he never trully re-invented himself or tried anything new and original at all.. After creating the trends that defined an entire decade,he became lazy and started to chase trends.(even with the legendary Bad ,he was trying to make another Thriller,instead of trying to explore something new musically. For that matter,Dangerous is way better than Bad,but sadly it lacks the Quincy Jones touch and it isn't as cohesive as the Q collaborations). On the other hand,Prince never let the succes of the Purple Rain movie/song/album/tour get to him. Even after selling 20+ million copies of the soundtrack and winning an Oscar for it ,Prince completely re-invented his sound and made his music better than ever . He did hit his creative peak after Purple Rain,and his work wasn't as commercial anymore since Prince's genius vision wasn't and still isn't for everybody(that until he made Diamonds and Pearls and had again big succes with the singles/videos/tour. Tho I have to admit that , while it still has the unique Prince touch, Diamonds and Pearls was commercial,unlike Sign o the times/Lovesexy) So yeah
