Over the years Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully accumulated a museum's worth of baseball memorabilia. Now, he's decided to auction off much of his prized collection, with the proceeds going to his kids and grandkids, and to charity. Correspondent Lee Cowan talks with the legendary announcer who shares the stories behind some of his unique artifacts of baseball history.

Anyone else get teary-eyed the day Scully retired and gave his final speech to his fans?
@joebarr725
@joebarr725 4 жыл бұрын
Are you kidding? I got teary-eyed at the end of this video when Vin acknowledged that he doesn't have but a few years left on Earth. And I was at Dodger Stadium for Vin Scully Day, which was his next-to-last game at Dodger Stadium. In his last game at Dodger Stadium, Charlie Culberson hit a walk-off HR for the Dodgers.Then he broadcast the Dodgers' last series of the season from SF, when he gave his fond farewell.

The highest tribute that could be given to Vin here on Earth was the sight in my youth of thousands of fans (me included) in Dodger Stadium with their transistor radios in hand so we could hear Vin Scully describe what we were seeing with our own eyes. The pictures that Vin painted with his words were so superior to what our eyes could see. You will be missed dearest Vin, but I take consolation that you are now in your rightful place in the presence of the Big Dodger In The Sky which you so rightly earned through a great life you lived. I will keep you alive in my memories, My Friend, for all the days of my life.

I still recall somewhat many of his calls. Final game of the 1965 season, Dodgers at home vs. the Milwaukee Braves. October 3rd, "Okay, now everyone easing up on the edge of their seat, Doug Harvey settling down behind the catcher Rosboro at the plate, pitcher into his windup ... and comes to the plate. There's a high fly, but catchable, toward left field. Sweet Lou Johnson in ... under it, has it and pulls his glove to his chest." The huge cacophony of wild cheers all being heard for the longest time on the transistor radio was all that was heard. Then, "The Dodgers are celebrating on the field and the fans are celebrating the Dodgers!" More crowd noise. "Well everybody we'll have more from Jerry Doggett s bit later as he's making his way to the clubhouse. But for now, we're on our way to Minnesota where we'll see you for the first game of the World Series."

@@dodgersfan8598 Well it seems like he clearly remembers the day he got it and not many people can say they got to meet the GOAT. So I bet the sentimental value is priceless. Money wise though, that's hard to say. It's definitely worth something because it's Babe Ruth. But at the same time, I've heard Vin Scully tell that story before in another video and it sounded like Babe Ruth was handing out one of those cards to anyone that asked. So the price would be lowered if a lot of people had them. I haven't seen any though. So again, that's hard to say. I'm really curious to see what it would go for though...

In 1950, Vin Scully called a preseason game where the opposition was managed by Connie Mack, who began his career in 1886 as a player for the Washington Senators. Combined, both of their careers totaled 130 years, spanning the vast majority of the history of the sport.

I'll keep sayin it till it happens. The Dodgers announcer booth needs to be, should be, better be, named the Vin Scully booth. His voice is immediately recognized. Part of my youth as many have said already. I can still hear him on the KTLA commercials for Starter Bros in the early-mid 90s. A true TREASURE. The greatest that will ever be. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM. Orel and the other guy do a great job. But they are not Vin.
