He wrote this song to his brother because His brother was dying. He loved his brother even though his brother chose a harder life to live than Vince did. Us white folks use this song a lot at the funeral home as we send our kinfolk off hopefully to Heaven. I believe this song should be used at everybody's funeral not just white folks.

He actually started writing it about Keith Whitney as they were good friends when Keith died and Vincent brother passed before he finished writing the song so he then wrote it about his brother and Keith whitley
@shawnj196610 ай бұрын
Originally, the song was about Keith Whitley. The first verses reference Keith Whitley songs. It was left incomplete until his brother died and then it was finished and dedicated to him instead. What any of that has to do with white folks, is beyond me. Of course people that aren't white can use the song at funerals. They just don't because they either have never heard it, have other options or their loved one isn't being buried on a mountain!

Keith Whitley was the reason that Vince began writing this song. As a neighbor of Keith's hometown, he is still missed and never forgotten.

Many have said that he wrote this song for his brother. He actually started writing this song after the death of country Superstar Keith Whitley. Keith drank himself to death and died from alcohol poisoning. The first verse pays respect to Keith when he says you were no stranger to the rain. One of Keith's biggest hits was a song called I'm no Stranger to the Rain. Vince didn't finish the song for many years until the passing of his brother. Yes Patty Loveless was the same female singer in the last video that you did.

That’s that bluegrass harmony singin’. This song has been played at every funeral I’ve ever been to. Next you should hear Vince’s duet with Reba McEntire “The Heart Won’t Lie.” Or “I Still Believe in You.” That’s probably his most popular song.

I loved hearing your response to this song. Vince is such an excellent artist in everything he has done. I agree with you, the other two singing along with him are outstanding. In my youth in the early 70's I remember Vince Gill singing along with a little mountain band/country music group going by the name Pure Prairie League and they came out with a song called "Amy". You would be blessed to check our their album and/or their hit single "Amy" from that album. I have it still in my collection from my old college days. Please look it up. I think you would like it. It's a fun song with a snappy beat.

Oops, I spoke too soon. The song "Amie" came out in 1972 and Vince Gill didn't join the group till 1979. Love that album "Bustin' Out" . . . played it endlessly and followed many of the artists on that album who went on to other venture in their musical careers. Really, check our "Amie".
