I saw Vince at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, Ohio. Vince’s Dad was a federal court judge in Columbus. He died 2 weeks before the show. We thought Vince would cancel, but he didn’t. His last song was “Go Rest High On The Mountain “. He broke down crying after about 30 seconds into the song. Everyone stood and finished singing the song for him while he stood on stage and cried. We all left the show crying.

"You're no stranger to the rain..." Vince started writing this when Keith Whitley died of acute alcohol poisoning and "finished" when his brother died. However, he did not feel it was complete and in 2020 completed the song. The lyrics to the new verse are as follows: "You're safely home in the arms of Jesus / Eternal life, my brother's found / The day will come I know I'll see him / In that sacred place, on that holy ground." He fought his way through this song with the help from Patty Loveless at George Jones', aka Possum, funeral where other stars stood to support him. That version is very hard to watch.

The accident placed Bob in a coma for three months and left him with irreversible brain damage. He subsequently struggled in life and would lose contact with his family and friends. He died in 1993.[3] Gill wrote the song "It Won't Be the Same This Year" for his brother. First time here... These guys are more than just country music artists. They all 3 are more Bluegrass as well as country. Vince goes way back to rock n roll days ('70's). I know Ricky's big bluegrass guy. And Patty began in the late '80's doing more mainstream country, but she's got Bluegrass in her DNA coming from Kentucky! Lol! But all these people are craftsmen (and woman!). They are all excellent musicians and can play and sing with the best because they ARE the very best. I saw Patty on stage, not 15 ft away from me in '88 and I always knew she'd be special and I was right. This music is great because it's real. From the heart n soul and as real as it gets. What can one say about Vince Gill.. True story... My nephew was installing a putting green that his wife was giving him as a present... Went by to see the job .He walked up to me and as I said nice to meet you Mr Gill, he quickly interrupted me and said with a smile just call me Vinnie... This is a real down to earth person... Oh and a great singer songwriter... I saw him sing this in New York at Carnegie Hall with Ricky Scaggs and instead of Patty Loveless, Allison Krauss did the harmony... While it was wonderful, it had a totally different vibe..

This song means a lot to millions of people. And many people have requested to have this song played at a loved one's funeral. In my case, my mom planned her entire funeral while she was dying of cancer. Her old co-worker and a good friend sang this at my mother's funeral last November shortly after her diagnosis. Vince Gill was her favorite artist and this was her favorite song. Oddly enough whenever I hear the song I do not cry, I smile because when I hear it I know that we did well with remembering her. That is what this song is about remembering the loved ones that you have lost. As well as celebrating the life that they lived.

I had to put my 16 y.o. doggie down two days ago, and I'm looking for a few songs to commemorate his life and love we had together. This song, along with Elvis', "I'm So Lonely, I Could Cry". I think I fell in love with Vince’s voice the first time with “When I Called Your Name.” Most recently, his song about his wife, contemporary Christian singer, Amy Grant…”When My Amy Prays” reminded me of why I love his vocals/lyrics. While I understand why many think this is true it is not. "When I Called Your Name" was released on his 1990 album by the same title, he was married to his first wife at that time. He did not meet Amy Grant until about 1993 or 94. Amy was married at the time. The both eventually divorced in the late 90s and got married in 2000.

This song is amazing and brings me to tears almost every time I hear it. I remember I saw Vince perform it at Carnegie Hall some years after he had released it and he had said a brief statement about the number of people that had written to him or told him how much it helped them through their times of grief, and he seemed genuinely shocked. But that is the kind of man Vince Gill is, very humble, very "almost shy", not looking for notice or fame from others. The first time I ever heard Vince's voice, that high pure tenor, on "When I Call Your Name" I fell in love with him and his voice instantly. He's an amazing singer, but is singing doesn't compare to his guitar playing, he is one of the best guitar players in the U.S. You've probably heard him on many Artists albums from Rock to Blues to Country to Christian and didn't even know it. He turned down an offer to join "Dire Straits" as their Guitarist, because he'd just signed his first Country Music label. When he got older and slowed down the Country thing, he joined the Eagles and played with them for a while. He is an amazing "strings" player and if you ever get the chance to check out a video and see his Guitar Collection....its incredible. So very glad you did this song. Oh and the other 2 who sang harmony with him are Ricky Scaggs and Patty Loveless. Thank you for the great reaction! Home Free has a very beautiful version of this song with a video that has a military theme. They wanted to give justice to the amazing song but somehow not disrespect it. It's extremely emotional and respectful. The military themed video is a way to give honor to the original song but not take away any of the meaning, just show's how the pain and loss of loved one's can be felt in different circumstances. Vince Gill is a legend! Started out in pop, easy rock/ folk/ top 40 genres with a group called Pure Prairie League. An amazing singer/ songwriter/guitarist and multiple times over award winner! Vince is one, if not the best, guitar/banjo pickers in country. He plays on many people’s songs. He’s been around forever & has an angelic tenor voice. Hello! I love Vince Gill's songs & voice. Thank you for doing that one. I knew you'd like his voice. He has many great songs - mostly from the 90s - and some 80s, I guess - I sent a bunch of his songs the 1st time I inundated you with those 2 long lists. Ha ha. My father died when I was 6 - and he was a Christian - but James Taylor's "Fire & Rain," is the song that always made me think of him. Vince Gill's one of the nicest people around. I absolutely love his voice and have since the days he sang with Pure Prairie League. His wife Amy Grant, another Grammy winning singer, live near my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee and they are ambassadors for our city and its people Does this song not remind you of an old Irish or Scottish folk song? You can hear the roots of Appalachian bluegrass style music as they are directly related to their Irish and Scottish ancestors who settled in the Appalachian Mountains of the south. I strongly suggest you check out Vince Gill's song Let Me Love You Tonight. It's a little more upbeat and another good representation of what his music is like.

@ Karen Mother of Cats Great historical context. I live in Western N.C. mountains, near Blue Ridge Parkway; my family's ancestors are Scots-Irish and Welsh. This was played at my nephew's funeral. He was only 19 years old and had just graduated, had gotten a scholarship and was planning on attending college when he was killed in a freak snowmobile accident. It was so heartbreaking and this song always makes me feel his loss.
