I saw Vince at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, Ohio. Vince’s Dad was a federal court judge in Columbus. He died 2 weeks before the show. We thought Vince would cancel, but he didn’t. His last song was “Go Rest High On The Mountain “. He broke down crying after about 30 seconds into the song. Everyone stood and finished singing the song for him while he stood on stage and cried. We all left the show crying.

First time here... These guys are more than just country music artists. They all 3 are more Bluegrass as well as country. Vince goes way back to rock n roll days ('70's). I know Ricky's big bluegrass guy. And Patty began in the late '80's doing more mainstream country, but she's got Bluegrass in her DNA coming from Kentucky! Lol! But all these people are craftsmen (and woman!). They are all excellent musicians and can play and sing with the best because they ARE the very best. I saw Patty on stage, not 15 ft away from me in '88 and I always knew she'd be special and I was right. This music is great because it's real. From the heart n soul and as real as it gets. "You're no stranger to the rain..." Vince started writing this when Keith Whitley died of acute alcohol poisoning and "finished" when his brother died. However, he did not feel it was complete and in 2020 completed the song. The lyrics to the new verse are as follows: "You're safely home in the arms of Jesus / Eternal life, my brother's found / The day will come I know I'll see him / In that sacred place, on that holy ground." He fought his way through this song with the help from Patty Loveless at George Jones', aka Possum, funeral where other stars stood to support him. That version is very hard to watch.

@@pageribe2399 In 1968, Gill's older half-brother, Bob Coen, was involved in a severe car crash. Bob was 22 years old at the time, while Gill was 11. The accident placed Bob in a coma for three months and left him with irreversible brain damage. He subsequently struggled in life and would lose contact with his family and friends. He died in 1993.[3] Gill wrote the song "It Won't Be the Same This Year" for his brother. He dedicated his 1993 Christmas album Let There Be Peace on Earth and his first televised Christmas special that year to Coen. -- Wikepedia

I attended a family service today for my 27 year old nephew who passed away January 3rd. He was a tormented young man who turned to drugs and alcohol. This song was played before his casket was closed for the final time. Damned near tore the heart right out of my chest. RIP Kyle 🙏 🕊 💜

When my father-in-law passed my wife was naturally extremely upset so I helped plan his funeral. He lived his whole life in the north Georgia (US) mountains and this song just seemed to fit his life perfectly, so I chose it. He died in 2009 and my wife still can't listen to the song without breaking down. And to be honest, neither can I.

This song is amazing and brings me to tears almost every time I hear it. I remember I saw Vince perform it at Carnegie Hall some years after he had released it and he had said a brief statement about the number of people that had written to him or told him how much it helped them through their times of grief, and he seemed genuinely shocked. But that is the kind of man Vince Gill is, very humble, very "almost shy", not looking for notice or fame from others. The first time I ever heard Vince's voice, that high pure tenor, on "When I Call Your Name" I fell in love with him and his voice instantly. He's an amazing singer, but is singing doesn't compare to his guitar playing, he is one of the best guitar players in the U.S. You've probably heard him on many Artists albums from Rock to Blues to Country to Christian and didn't even know it. He turned down an offer to join "Dire Straits" as their Guitarist, because he'd just signed his first Country Music label. When he got older and slowed down the Country thing, he joined the Eagles and played with them for a while. He is an amazing "strings" player and if you ever get the chance to check out a video and see his Guitar Collection....its incredible. So very glad you did this song. Oh and the other 2 who sang harmony with him are Ricky Scaggs and Patty Loveless. Thank you for the great reaction! While I understand why many think this is true it is not. "When I Called Your Name" was released on his 1990 album by the same title, he was married to his first wife at that time. He did not meet Amy Grant until about 1993 or 94. Amy was married at the time. The both eventually divorced in the late 90s and got married in 2000.

No matter how many times or how many versions of this song I’ve heard, I usually end up in tears. It seems like this is a top choice for people to play at a loved one’s funeral. Home Free has a very beautiful version of this song with a video that has a military theme. They wanted to give justice to the amazing song but somehow not disrespect it. It's extremely emotional and respectful. The military themed video is a way to give honor to the original song but not take away any of the meaning, just show's how the pain and loss of loved one's can be felt in different circumstances. Vince Gill is a legend! Started out in pop, easy rock/ folk/ top 40 genres with a group called Pure Prairie League. An amazing singer/ songwriter/guitarist and multiple times over award winner! I had this song played at my husband's funeral almost 15 years ago and a lot of people must have had it played at loved one's funerals because I believe it has replaced "Amazing Grace" as the number one song to be requested at funerals. Hello! I love Vince Gill's songs & voice. Thank you for doing that one. I knew you'd like his voice. He has many great songs - mostly from the 90s - and some 80s, I guess - I sent a bunch of his songs the 1st time I inundated you with those 2 long lists. Ha ha. My father died when I was 6 - and he was a Christian - but James Taylor's "Fire & Rain," is the song that always made me think of him. (I'm aware there are lines that are for adults, not father/daughter, but a lot of the song's lyrics & sound hit me with a case of the blues). This song reminds me of a friend. Glad you liked him!! Vince G. is married to Amy Grant (gospel/"popish" singer, probably heard of her) and I believe they still live in metro Atlanta, Georgia. There is one song I'll repeat from the list I gave you. I am pretty sure you got the songs in your "thingamabob." This song was a radio hit, but now it's kind of hard to find, have to scroll pretty far..."There Ain't No Future in the Past." Beautiful vocals, really high notes, pretty, melancholy song. It seems to be one of those songs that was popular but he's not known for that now so I guess it got dumped in the memory hole of YT. That lone violin, oh my...as mournful as bagpipes or a solitary harmonica. Such a treasure this song and Vince Gill. Have bought many records of his over the decades. I had to put my 16 y.o. doggie down two days ago, and I'm looking for a few songs to commemorate his life and love we had together. This song, along with Elvis', "I'm So Lonely, I Could Cry". Vince is one, if not the best, guitar/banjo pickers in country. He plays on many people’s songs. He’s been around forever & has an angelic tenor voice. My uncle who was like a big brother to me was killed in a coal mine accident ( a cave in ) and this eong came out that same week. I remember driving down the road and I had to pull over when I heard it for the first time. Vince Gill's one of the nicest people around. I absolutely love his voice and have since the days he sang with Pure Prairie League. His wife Amy Grant, another Grammy winning singer, live near my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee and they are ambassadors for our city and its people Does this song not remind you of an old Irish or Scottish folk song? You can hear the roots of Appalachian bluegrass style music as they are directly related to their Irish and Scottish ancestors who settled in the Appalachian Mountains of the south. I strongly suggest you check out Vince Gill's song Let Me Love You Tonight. It's a little more upbeat and another good representation of what his music is like.

This one gets me everytime ... tears a flowin' and tissues are a flyin'. To see the audience try to encourage Vince and Patty's super efforts to comfort and help out Vince was amazing to see. Apparently, his guitar solo wasn't planned, but he wanted to get his composure back, which is why they let him do it. Vince wrote this song for his late brother, his good friend Keith and of course, George Jones, so it had a powerful meaning and heartbreak for him. He has one of the most unique voices in the industry, and I loved him from the moment I heard "When I call your name" all those years ago, which remained my late husband's favorite song until he passed away. I heard Carrie Underwood do a gorgeous rendition of this song in honor of Vince and it made me cry it was sung so beautifully. Please check it out. She is unbelievable singing it

High on that mountain is where my son is, he left this earth 5 years ago. This song breaks my heart for all who have lost a child. I know when I travel up to that mountain, he’ll be there waiting with the Father and the Son.

This is a beautiful son. I played it at my dad's funeral and my brother's. Give John Michael Montgomery's I Miss You A Little. It always gets me to tear up. I played that one at their funeral as well, and it hit me harder than this one. Both of these songs really mean the world to me, and make me remember the days with them.

Also, Ricky Skaggs (one of the singers with Vince; the other is Patty Loveless), was a good friend of Keith Whitley, both with the band The Cinch Mountain Boys, under Ralph Stanley. This song was written for Keith and Vince's brother, both who passed away. Keith was only 34 years old. Patty Loveless is from eastern Kentucky, and both Keith and Ricky are from Kentucky. No wonder their voices mesh so well. Keith mentioned that he fought the devil and he was no stranger to the rain, lyrics in this song, and also from Keith's song "I'm No Stranger to The Rain".

What can one say about Vince Gill.. True story... My nephew was installing a putting green that his wife was giving him as a present... Went by to see the job .He walked up to me and as I said nice to meet you Mr Gill, he quickly interrupted me and said with a smile just call me Vinnie... This is a real down to earth person... Oh and a great singer songwriter... I saw him sing this in New York at Carnegie Hall with Ricky Scaggs and instead of Patty Loveless, Allison Krauss did the harmony... While it was wonderful, it had a totally different vibe..

All I can do during this song is close my eyes and sing…one of the very best songs ever Also, Vince has a live performance of this song ( I’m not sure which one) but he breaks down in the middle of singing this song and can’t continue for a few moments. It breaks my heart 💔

This song means a lot to millions of people. And many people have requested to have this song played at a loved one's funeral. In my case, my mom planned her entire funeral while she was dying of cancer. Her old co-worker and a good friend sang this at my mother's funeral last November shortly after her diagnosis. Vince Gill was her favorite artist and this was her favorite song. Oddly enough whenever I hear the song I do not cry, I smile because when I hear it I know that we did well with remembering her. That is what this song is about remembering the loved ones that you have lost. As well as celebrating the life that they lived.
