+Ryan Keefe Some of his opinions are a little weird (like not considering ROH professional wrestling), but his opinion on the industry is kind of spot on. WWE is, and always was, about the entertainment before the pure wrestling. Austin, the Rock, Triple H, Undertaker; all of these people made the attitude era, and it was all down to their gimmicks and entertainment factor, not their wrestling ability, the wrestling was just the icing on the cake. The story is what matters in the WWE.

@Thecallmemisterajp8 жыл бұрын
Always liked Russo, and he's spot on about wrestling in a lot of ways. As much as I love a good match, there's way too much focus on having good matches for the sake of good matches, and not enough on having a believable, realistic conflict. I've always felt that WWE in particular would put the focus on the matches to cover up for their bad booking, and that's especially apparent now. Matches are about the only thing they don't really mess up.
@Daniel-nw3hg8 жыл бұрын
Well its 50/50 really cause a bad story can make a story horrible and boring but then the resulting factor and match being bad can give it bad end and feel a bit awkward as it fell flat
@Thecallmemisterajp8 жыл бұрын
That's true, and matches are an important piece of the puzzle, but there are a lot of things that get tossed out of the window when guys are chasing that five-star match designation. Nuances of how a Roddy Piper, a Mick Foley, or a Bruiser Brody would approach a match when compared to a Bret Hart, vs a Flair or HBK vs a Yokozuna or someone aren't really emphasized as much anymore as people seem to have this stock idea of what makes a match good and strive for that. I think that's one reason Brock really got over in 2014-15. They booked him in even-Steven matches with guys like HHH and Punk that had lots of give and take between both guys, because that's what people come to expect in great matches. But as a result, he lost some luster. But now, he's booked as the monster he truly is, and his matches are still great, but more for the spectacle of watching him destroy people than to see him try to force an epic. It's Brock being Brock -- the match comes second.
@Daniel-nw3hg8 жыл бұрын
Yeh I agree and see where you're coming from and them Paul heyman segments though
@mitchcolburn12165 жыл бұрын
Agreed, that's why I hate the current state of wrestling. Too much emphasis on kicks and high spots, not nearly enough focus on character development, storytelling, promos, and build, which are the real draws rather than the matches themselves. It's a huge reason guys like Sami Zayn, The Revival, DIY, Undisputed Era, Ricochet, Aleister Black, even guys like Balor and Styles either flop big time or have success in kayfabe but completely fail to draw any money. There's simply nothing to them other than "oh, look at me, I can do a bunch of spots!" AND?! The average mainstream fan doesn't care how many spots and kicks you can do, or even if you're that good a wrestler. The mainstream audience cares about the personalities, storylines, and build. THOSE are the things that draw money.
@Thechezbailey5 жыл бұрын
Totally. And here's where it isn't fair how people treat Russo. The Attitude Era was his baby, bro. He understands wrestling storytelling, bro. Bro, I know it's fun to make fun of him, bro, but the ratings he got speak for themselves, bro.

Well, to be honest, he said those things in different context. He said that wrestling is no longer about story as it was in the 70's. But he also criticized the stories now a day for going backwards into older styles of story telling rather than trying to innovate and create new more creative ways of telling a story.

You can say whatever you want about Russo, but when he was in the business Wrestling was hot and Raw was must-see TV. Of course at some point he lost it, but I think his ideas helped to safe WWF. Cornette will always be a great historian and expert of wrestling, but his NWA crossover almost killed WWF back then.

This is the kind of thing I have a lot of respect for. Both guys know where they stand and neither makes a sudden 180 in the other's presence, and we just get a proper interview. Much credit to both, I'd love to see something long form where both guys can go into detail about specific moments and decisions on which they disagree. I hope they try to set something like that up.

Russo thinks it's still 1998 and hasn't come to the realization that 98-99% of WWE fans watching the product are "diehard IWCers". WWE ran all the casual fans off years and years ago and they aren't coming back, ever. This is also WWE's biggest problem...they're writing a show for and making decisions based off what they think a completely imaginary audience wants to see, so people shit all over guys like Reigns but keep watching BECAUSE THEY'RE DIEHARD IWCERS....they're the only fans WWE has left.

I see where you're coming from, but I think that 98% of WWE fans are "IWCers," is a little ridiculous. And even if it were true, the IWC loves guys like the Jacksons and Joey Ryan and the vast majority of their stuff is strictly "entertainment," without there being emphasis on a cult style of in ring work. Even though they also like guys that are amazing in the ring, I think it works both ways like LU, which is a great company from a "sports entertaining," out look what with all it's great production value and special effects. Though, I totally see where you're coming from here.

Inyourhouse It was 20% in the 90s and has constantly been going up as more and more casual fans die off and completely stop watching. This entire generation of WWE fans are IWCers by default. The audience consists of old school diehard fans and new school internet savy / smart fans. Both groups never get what they want but since they're diehards, they still watch, so the ratings don't ever take a massive hit and they still subscribe to the network. WWE's product now is actually directly aimed at the diehard fans and trying to work them. McMahon knows he can get away with abusing, shitting on and never really giving the audience what they want (he'll throw them a hope spot here and there, for shits and giggles, it's how he gets off) while being able get away with keeping a PG rating and reaping all the ad dollars and other perks that come with being "kid friendly"...even though there's barley any kids actually watching....just diehards that won't ever stop.

+c4p 420 I know diehards never stop even if roman had every belt they still wouldn't stop. But could u show me some stats for merchandise etc that prove smarks are buying shit etc Romans merchant is among the top 10 for men women and children and has 3 items in the top 10 of the whole shop so if smarks hate roman they wouldn't buy his merch so someone's buying it unless smarks secretly like roman lol

I'm not going to trash Russo for the sake of trashing him, but when he says his biggest influence as a writer is reality TV my head wanted to explode. I don't think anyone would try to argue that Pro Wrestling is the highest-brow entertainment, but bringing it down to the levels of daytime talk shows, MTV reality programming, and network shows like The Biggest Loser, Survivor, etc. is probably on the reasons for that 15 year decline.

Brian! This interview was great. Though, I have no idea how to feel about Vince now... I've been on the Cornette Train for years, and this interview actually made Russo seem somewhat likable... Anyway, as usual another great video man!
