How has this just now been discovered? Because his paintings didn't sell all that well in his in his lifetime, he was always just barely scraping by. I thought it was well known that he reused canvas somewhat more regularly than other artists of his time, often smoothing and painting right overtop of a previous work. I'd have expected every Van Gogh to have been x-rayed ages ago. If he really did flip the canvas for this one, I'm quite glad that he preserved the original.

I believe it is because this is a very sophisticated process, not at all like the ease of a medical x-ray. So, paintings have to be carefully selected and taken to specialised facilities.

@@romulusbuta9318 I'd like to add that he was a very difficult man to get along with. Records of his personality paint him as being a depressed, short tempered, schizophrenic, alcoholic with Asperger's syndrome. No one ever pursued a relationship with him and after getting his heart broken by his widowed cousin, he never tried to court anyone again.

@@jirikrajnak9047 Knee jerk? No. I am a histroy nerd with an exact definition (even if other people disagree) of "art". That is, if it exceeds the average ability/competency etc of thier age group or species. So if a 3 year old (or a donkey) can drip paint all over stuff, then it isn't art when a grown man does it. And contractors that paint houses etc for a living make ""masterpieces" every day. Or do they? While I cannot afford to travel too much, I do go to galleries and museums whenever I do and I would be more impressed with Pollocks work if he had been a donkey, or a three year old.

It wasn't unusual for artists of that time to paint over one painting with another as supplies weren't cheap and patrons could be real penny pincers... I think it's fabulous that they found this. I hope they can reveal the portrait with out ruining the painting of the peasant woman as well.

“I dream my painting, and then I paint my dream.” - Vincent Van Gogh. People do not recognize Van Gogh was having Clairvoyant dreams. Very few in this world have that ability. It is also quite uncomfortable and people might think the subject is crazy. Yet, that is not exactly the case. Van Gogh also was doing early forms of steganography. Steganography (/ˌstɛɡəˈnɒɡrəfi/ (listen) STEG-ə-NOG-rə-fee) is the practice of concealing a message within another message or a physical object. In computing/electronic contexts, a computer file, message, image, or video is concealed within another file, message, image, or video. The word steganography comes from Greek steganographia, which combines the words steganós (στεγανός), meaning "covered or concealed", and -graphia (γραφή) meaning "writing".[1] Connect the dots: 1. Van Gogh - Almond Blossoms 2. FIVE Books of Moses - Almond Blossoms, A cure for plague / smallpox or monkeypox or covid. 3. Aaron's Rod bloomed Almond Blossoms OUT OF MANY, ONE GOD GIVEN

@@barrymoore4470 true but 4 years is not that long. I am Dutch and have lived abroad (Portugal) but when I was angry and said bad words I always did it in my native tongue. Even after 10 years. I think it's just wired in your brain and in all emotion/anger you will fall back to your native language. So van Gogh probably said (God)verdomme= merde Btw, he has probably said merde many times but just wanted to emphasize that he is Dutch and we are proud of that. His life story is a rather sad one though. I wish he could see his art right now

@@slavaukraini1811 I think you're quite right that we all are likely to fall back on our native language when expressing sharp or deep emotion. And it does rankle when van Gogh is sometimes misrepresented as French, simply because his most canonical period stems from the time of his French residency. Of course, considering how widely beloved his legacy now is, in some ways he now truly belongs to the world. Thank you for your elucidation, and introducing me to my first Dutch swear word!

It's our own fault. They tailor their content according to what the majority want to hear about. All the scientific work going on all the time, stuff about art and literature, not to mention just interesting events from around the world, yet most people are more interested in murder and depravity. Mainstream TV is absolutely rammed with that kind of content every night. Some channels have hours of stuff about real life murder cases every single night of the week and never seem to run out. It's depressing stuff. This is why I don't watch news much and much prefer youtube.

About Van Gogh The vivid and powerful brushstrokes are permeated with indescribable pains, sorrows and bitterness weaving the first gorgeousness, splendor, warmth. From heart to soul Some messages, slowly chewing, sedimentary , sublimation The swirls in the sky are like God's eye watches everything The wave of the wheat fields are like the rich and fragrant breasts of a peasant woman in the countryside. The stubborn and simple sower at sunset is the painter himself--Van Gogh A life of solitude and full of passion and Untold vicissitudes of life. 2014.10.10

These artists were poor as hell. They all reduced, reused, and recycled what they had. It is only now that technology is good enough to do this, and the owners/museums/galleries have to get permission to do it, and that is often hard as hell. So when they do manage to do this, of course it will end up on the news. The world is more than corrupt duopoly and Pokémon cards. As a history nerd, I find this exciting.
