Jack Charlton loved his home town of Ashington and townsfolk loved Jack so much that they had a statue erected to him that overlooks the field where he played as a boy, the school he attended and beyond it, the street where he was raised with his three brothers. The statue was unveiled in Hirst Park by Jack's wife Pat, On October 29, 2022. Pat told the hundreds who gathered in the rain that in his career Jack had played away a lot in his career and added, "But now he is back home."
The sculptor, Douglas Jennings, based the statue on a photograph of Jack smiling as he watched children playing a game of football.

@@vincentgledhill I didn't realize that!..And in this day of instant Celebrity addiction (it's like ur purchasing some kind of new cereal at the Grocery store!) Jack Charlton was extremely well known for all the right reasons!..And he had so many top qualities it's hard to put u finger on one in particular, but his 'down to earth' honest persona stands out for me&as I said he gave the Irish ☘️ people something to be proud of in the field of Sport!(especially on a International level)

@@jerryoshea3116 I'm from Jack's home town and went to school with his youngest brother, Tommy. I also ghost wrote his mother Cissie's autobiography, so I knew him well and, take it from me, he was every bit as genuine as he appeared to be. He also loved being an adopted Irishman

@@vincentgledhill Wow that's amazing &I'm honoured👍..And I just watched that 1971 Tyne Tees Docum..It was great to see the county back then& him mixing with the people he grew up(Geordie's always so friendly and grounded from my experience!) with,&his family,it really was a excellent piece of work there&in todays media obsessed world he was a Producers dream,( and nightmare because he was obsessed with being honest& straightforward)And this is why he was so appreciated and respected! And his family really were such high achievers to say the least, and of course his Brother Bobby also being a football Legend! And as for me being born in London to Irish Parents,Jack did so much to give the people of Ireland something to rejoice,&and the sudden rise of the football team(who were seen as a easy mark up until his arrival on the scene !) Was phenomenal!..Yes they don't make them like him anymore!

@@jerryoshea3116 In his later years Jack liked nothing better than walking along the prom in the seaside town of Newbiggin, which is next to Ashington, where he was born. While his wife had her hair done by a hairdresser who was also an old friend, Jack would walk along the prom chatting to anyone he met. Eventually he would end up at Newbiggin golf club where he would have a coffee with an old friend who had been in his class at school. Jack never forgot his roots.
