Ang Cui joins Immune to discuss her career and her work on establishing the Immune Dictionary, a compendium of single-cell transcriptomic profiles of more than 17 immune cell types in response to each of 86 cytokines (over 1,400 cytokine-cell type combinations) in mouse lymph nodes in vivo.

This was one of the most outstanding presentations I have watched on Microbe TV. Such brilliance here and I have no doubt that the discoveries we see going forward will be stunning and outstanding. I learned new things and ways to understand the complexity. Thanks.

Wow! What a stellar interview/presentation! Mind-blowing. Ang Cui, you are one extraordinary interdisciplinary researcher and scientist. Splendid to hear your start was as University of Toronto, which is my own alumni (did my Bachelors in Microbiology at U of T). Thank you to Microbe TV for putting Ang on our radar! Will be following her future work closely. Please have her on again!

Is there a diagram of the human immune system that you would consider good at showing the principle components, that could be used for orientation purposes with IMMUNES or Q&As with Cindy/Brianne? With a very rudimentary understanding of the immune system, it would be helpful in following along when topics jump into specific areas.

Speaking of webs of communication…for every signal sent there’s a corresponding receptor, very like human language. No matter how fluent the Dutch speaker, my English-trained brain is not going to react when he yells “pappekak!” (pappe = soft; kak = dung), despite the fact a Dutch speaker will understand Chaucerian better than modern English, and our word “poppycock” comes from the Dutch (for “soft dung.”). I see Poppycock is now the brand name for a nut company. Seems wrong. Even an English speaker can cause a momentary revolt in me if a wrong word is used or a single letter misplaced… I fell asleep at 5AM during a TWIV video and woke up just now to this video, and someone saying “A whole Nother” …which I am starting to hear surprisingly often among the well educated. I am wondering how long it will be before this is acceptable in formal English and “other” is first wrong, then finally completely forgotten, and our receptors will have simultaneously evolved for only “ a Nother.” After all, if you look up the etymology of “apron” it’s the faulty separation (as also in many other words, as in Adder, i.e., of A Nadder into AN adder) of “a Napron,” from Old French Naperon "small table-cloth," diminutive of Nappe "cloth.” Napron was still in use late 16c. English. English retains the original form in the diminutive-diminutive, “Napkin” and Brit. English “Nappy” for diaper. At this point, our receptors have changed to such a degree that “Napron” is forgotten - no points in Scrabble! - though “Nedder” is still the word for snake in Northern English dialects. So easy to see these vast webs of systems and their myriad interconnections, be they words or viruses or cells, are all a result of thousands (for language) and millions (for organisms) of years of evolution. It’s enough to make your head spin! Yet Ang Cui finds all the right words. Amazing!
