The statement that wooden debris was not burned, esp larger fragments and the very smallest items, is an indicator that Vindolanda had plentiful fuel supplies, and possibly that winters were far milder than present day. Considering the requirements for the heated rooms and baths, that is a lot of fuel indeed. Are there indications that the vicinity had denser woodlands than today?
