Marta, Thank you for following up on my recent inquiry about fossils at the site. Here’s another question: from how far away were Vindolandia’s stones quarried. Are they all the same type of limestone. Or lots of variations due to what was accessible at different points of time? Also what percentage needed to be cut, as opposed to used, “as is”?

I 100% thought this was going to be about things that Clogged the Bath drain not about the footwear clogs. I feel quite dumb lol.

No, that’s not us. We are in Northumberland, part of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site.

Im loving this series but it would be really great if you could somehow highlight the sections/house that you are talking about when you do an aerial shot. It would really help to get a clearer picture. I’ve got no idea where north or northwest is and sometimes can’t work out which bit you are looking at 😂

We absolutely take that feedback on board and we’ll see how to show that clearer in the next video!

Not likely, I'm afraid. They would end up in the ocean well South of NZ. The antipodes of NZ lie mostly in Spain and the Bay of Biscay. I know, because from where I live close to Auckland, New Zealand, the antipode falls in the South of Spain, in the mountains about 50 km almost due North of Gibraltar. I can now sit at my dining table and direct visitors' attention to a modest crystalline rock safely ensconced in the China cabinet, which is an actual piece of the Earth from a point straight down through the Earth from where they are sitting. 🙂

Nice! I had the opportunity to visit the site years ago while walking Hadrian’s wall by I was too tired to make the side trip. I’m kicking myself now 😂.

Marta, Does the site contain fossilized remains of prehistoric life? The stones used to build the structures look like limestone.

Amazing job, Martha! And what a wonderful find with the Roman brooch. You did a great job explaining the activity that’s been happening this year. I’m so sad I won’t be able to be there and therefore delighted that I can follow along through these videos. Can’t wait to see more! Kristin

Another great update - providing a real sense of this year's progress. I never fail to be impressed by your explanations of the complexity of the site structures Marta - and how they relate (or not) to each other. With so much construction and reconstruction within a defined space, it's a special skill. Looking forward to catching up soon, Joe

Popped down from Magna today to see how far you guys have got and i must say that's an impressive amount you've got done in just 6 weeks. I'm also glad to see the 'plinths' will be visible from the backfilled area, what a lot of discussion and head scratching they caused!

How about a nice, lengthy video reading some of the letters you have discovered? I understand there are several hundred, but if you search for videos (Letters from the Roman Front & Letters from the Roman Front Lines for example) you get the sams ten or twelve letters. I think a LOT of people would love to learn about many of the others!

Has anyone plotted where the trash heaps were on the site where the wood fragments with text were found? I am curious if other forts along Hadrian's Wall may have similar finds in similar locations? One thing is for certain, Romans followed many predictable patterns in their behaviors and constructions. Roman forts in Syria and Algeria follow the same patterns as those in Northern Europe. Similar rubbish heaps may simply be waiting.

As a veteran of more modern times, one thing that is always a real concern of the commanding officer is his men getting bored. So I guess the buildings being built and rebuilt would have been a constant distraction from being far away from home, in a hostile environment.

When I was growing up (now 60), my school trips, primary (Stocksfield) and grammar (Hexham), both just down the road from, would take school trips to Vindolanda, which was then just labelled as a Roman 'turret'... a very very extensive 'turret' judging by the extensive excavations you guys have done :) Well done team, keep on discovering , the more we know, the better we understand.

In the last shot of the dig, some of the pits are filled with water? Is this from rain, or the water table? And I know, either way this presents another challenge for excavation.

excavations are complete in that area. And in general, down to the original clay. No particular reason to keep it dry. Eventually there will be conservation of that quadrant and the swimming pool will go away.

I'm intrigued by the finds of coins of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. Are they casual losses from the time of Eric Birley's excavations, or did someone deliberately leave them as a kind of time capsule?
