Joel, a really bad port of DOOM is actually on the 3DO. You can't even play it because the screen is so freaking small and the frame rate is pretty bad. You gotta try it out.

It's shame both of those ports sucked, they had the potential to be pretty damn good. since the 3DO had a prett good version of Wolf3D and the Saturn had pretty good versions of Quake and Duke Nukem 3D. So it wasn't like a good port was beyond the capabilities of those consoles.

That's sorta beside the point, I wasn't commenting to spawn a debate on whether or not adware is wrong (and it is for any program, free or not). The point was that Joel, in the video, made a false claim that Project64 contains malware and this may cause some people to panic, when really there is no need to panic. If you unchecked the box for the toolbar, you don't have it. If you forgot to uncheck it, you probably removed it almost instantly. Project64 is a fantastic emulator and, while it has some adware, is virus-free.

Google blacklisting the site isn't proof that there's malware in the installer. There is no proof that there's malware in the installer (because there isn't). People reported the website as containing malware because they were upset at the adware/toolbars that PJ64 installed with. No malware in PJ64. Never has been, never will be.

But "malware" sounds inherently worse than "adware" -- I don't say, "I've been infected with malware!" when I forget to un-check the toolbar box. The super-accurate emulator Joel was talking about is called Higan (formerly Bsnes). I have no idea how it would run on an i3 or some shit, but on my i5 it runs just fine and the accuracy is superb. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's 100% accurate according to online tests.

Wisdom Tree legally licensed the Wolf 3D source from id. According to John Romero there was no thought on their part of getting revenge on Nintendo, "we just thought it would be funny to use the Wolf3D SNES engine in a religious game." The one day i watched Joel's streams he talks about the fainting goats. I have the exact disease they have and it fucking SUCKS to live with. its mostly just muscles flat out refusing to relax so they are tense for like, a good 30 seconds. happens all the time. There's this warm up effect thing where if you do the action over and over your muscles will act normally but that has no effect for me. life sucks.

It's bsnes (also higan), and nowadays it runs fast enough (especially in performance mode) without really sacrificing much accuracy at all. I'd recommend trying it out sometime. Especially in combination with an awesome GUI like RetroArch. It'll make games that have failed on stream likely to just run properly. (Doom's music being "bad" is ZSNES not doing a good job, too.) Oh well, Jole isn't gonna see this comment though.

Know what makes Doom on S-NES even more fun? When you figure out that it is 99% compatible with the S-NES Mouse. Just makes the experience even more enjoyable. They didn't plan on making it mouse compatible, either. Evidence is when you reach the level end and can't move on from the map screen UNTIL you hot swap the mouse for a controller, press the needed button, THEN hot swap the mouse back in. I never had any issues. But, those aren't USB joystick ports. Potential damage is warned about by the console makers.

It's one of my personal favorite gaming platforms along with the SNES and GameCube. There are a ton of really good games on that thing and the high concentration of games with really good music is something that always keeps me exploring the library looking for more. The quality of the games can be pretty variable, as really, anyone could make a game for it. However, the best of them are truly spectacular in my eyes. I'm glad someone like Larry can introduce people to it and I highly recommend looking into the library for those who haven't prior. :)

If you enjoy the team-building aspect in Final fantasy 1, I'd recommend trying the Etrian odyssey-games if you haven't. Really good, kind of oldschool dungeoncrawling RPGs that focus more on your dungeoncrawling-adventure with your selfmade team than a epic overlying plot.

FF2 was less bad in the remake versions (one thing is that stats don't drop and that HP boosts are guaranteed every 10 fights, but the remakes still don't tell you what's the evasion penalty for each armor part, which are unbalanced as fuck because you need to only use super light stuff with tiny evasion drops like the cuirasses because actually using normal stuff will give so many penalties that pretty much will make you get stuck with 01 evasion where the Agility for that won't even have a chance of growing in the first place, and the remakes still don't tell you which armor parts have penalties to magics which are the headgears that end with Helmet, chestplates that end with Armor, and accessories that end with Gloves. And the remakes still don't give you weapon/spell experience if you didn't use it enough times in the same battle for it to move the bar 1 pixel). And about the hit-yourself-to-get-HP thing, the actual check the game makes to grow your HP is not exactly how much you got hit, it only compares how much HP you started with and how much HP you finished with to see the percentage you lost, so if you get hit once and lose 70% HP then that's a huge chance to get HP growth even if you only got hit once and ended the fight in the first turn. And the game only checks what you started with and what you ended with, so if you punch yourself a lot but heal most of it before ending the fight the game will think you barely lost any so won't give the growth. If someone wanted to grind it, instead of beating yourself it would actually be a lot more efficient to just go to a weak area near an inn, heal yourself to full, have your character(s) cast Swap on a weak enemy then beat the enemy. You go from full to almost empty so it's a super huge chance to grow both HP and MP and the fight lasts nothing.

Wisdom Tree legitimately licensed the _Wolfenstein 3D_ source code from id -- their original intent, to make an officially-licensed _Hellraiser_ game... on the original NES. When it became abundantly clear they couldn't do it there, they moved to the Super NES, let the _Hellraiser_ license drop, and made _Super Noah's Ark 3D_ instead.
