The current state of mascot horror is so saddening to me. I was a young child when FNAF originally came out and so were many others, for us the biggest appeal was the darker elements, thats the reason FNAF and mascot horror in general has this reputation of being “for kids”. When FNAF and mascot horror as a genre started toning down the dark stuff (blood, gore, and frightening visuals) it ultimately alienated it’s original audience. My biggest hope is that FNAF and most of mascot horror can lean into the horror elements, because i would really like for Gen Alpha to get the same experience we got all those years ago.

I mean hey, it ain't all bad! Bad horror games have existed since the dawn of the genre, there's always been good games and bad games, and I feel like people overexaggerate the latter and downplay the former WAY too much. Bendy and the Dark Revival, Amanda the Adventurer, My Friendly Neighborhood, and of course most recently: FNaF Ruin(Indigo Park also seems pretty good, and it was made by that one dude who made a better version of Banban in like a week) I feel like the best mascot horror games are either the ones that lean all in on the horror as you said, or are the ones which acknowledge the idea as being a LITTLE silly and decide to be more tongue-in cheek-about it whilst still being genuinely tense in other ways. I dunno, I just wanna be a little more positive!
