Hold the L button before going to story mode/boss rush in the main menu, and your character will be saying Japanese (voice, not text) until you go to the main menu again.This works for all modes

This is the most underrated of the DS Castlevanias but it's definitely my favorite. It has some of the most unique mechanics and ambiences in the series. I heard Vinny was going to stream it but in a distant future. So AMAZING to see him playing it right now!

The mechanics and concepts are fantastic, but I feel the castle in this game never lived up to them. The level design is pretty dull in a lot of places and most of the bosses are either too easy or really uninspired. Which is sad because I love a lot of what the game does like the myriad subweapons and spells you can use, having to fight Richter in a somewhat challenging fight to unleash Vampire Killer's power, the final boss and the Nest of Evil, etc.

Honestly, I found Dawn the least interesting of the DS games. It was a severe drop in quality compared to its predecessor. I hated a lot of the grinding mechanics (Sound grinding was _execrable,_ and don't even get me started on weapon crafting) and the bosses were generally really crap. Most were just "I have two attacks lol" affairs that were about as interesting as paste. I found this game way better by comparison.

"Why didn't Dracula take X from the future" Dracula wasn't a time traveler, but he was a scientific man. His castles are always filled with elaborate contraptions, gears and clockwork, and the netflix series underlines his esteem for those who look at the world in a scientific light. My guess is that he just figured out combustion engines before humans did by a few decades. Or it's just hasty design choices without much forethought by the developers who weren't thinking too hard about what's out of place in their world development. Whichever you prefer, really

39:50 I've always loved how this boss is introduced. A little blue head is just sitting there, suddenly rises, laughs, a massive hulk of steel drops down, and arguably the best boss theme ever in Castlevania kicks in as it lands...and then it proceeds to utterly kick Vinny's ass. This honestly is a pretty damn hard boss for so early in the game; I had a tough time at least.

Glad to discover that Vinny is streaming this right as I start another playthrough of my own. I’ve been marathoning all the metroidvania-style games again in preparation for Bloodstained. It’s been interesting analyzing the strengths/weaknesses of each game and stacking them up against each other. Portrait is definitely one of the best, but Aria is my favorite.

For my money, this game and SoTN are the top contenders for best Castlevania OST. So many incredible tracks in this game and the remixes of old tracks like Crucifix Held Close and Iron Blue Intention are just magnificent. Definitely has a lot of great songs for the gym.

Mine will always be Portrait of Ruins. I think it does an better job keeping it's balance of an quality that the game offers. Order of Ecclesia is still an great game. Don't get me wrong. But I don't know. There's something about the quality & mechanics of Order of Ecclesia that feels off personally. Not to mentioned that it had an good chunk of unfair level designs or difficultly spikes that I wouldn't call it an great design. Still, I enjoy Order of Ecclesia. I just wish it could've handle an better way.

Dawn of Sorrow is my pick. It's not as challenging as Portrait of Ruin or Order of Ecclesia but PoR has its fair share of annoying areas like the Nation of Fools/Burnt Paradise and OoE with its hellish difficulty spikes. I'd argue that DoS has the best all-round experience, PoR has tight gameplay, and OoE has some good moments as well as the best story in the trilogy imo

CCCC-COMBO BREAKER! For some strange reason, I felt this was a part of a trend with DS platformers, as Mega Man ZX also had two playable characters and anime cutscenes, as well as dual antagonists in Prometheus and Pandora. Sonic did this as well in Sonic Rush with Blaze and the two Eggmen.

I think curse of darkness has some of the best Castlevania music, moreso because they weren't as limited by hardware so it's not as videogamey midizone-ified. That being said, I like this game's OST quite a bit as well.

For the record, the Castlevania timeline isn't the least bit confusing, nor is Zelda's. Castlevania has an extremely straightforward timeline. The N64 games and Legends are part of a different timeline, Lords of Shadow is its own failed reimagining, and games like Harmony of Despair and Judgement don't fit into any timeline and are just what-if crossovers. Also, I love how Vinny is taken aback at Castlevania 64 taking place in 1852 because of the motorcycles but never questions the hot dogs, burgers, Japanese pudding and New York-style pizza Alucard could obtain and the implication that Dracula's library contains The Wizard of Oz, Lord of the Rings and comic books in Symphony of the Night, which takes place in 1791. And even funnier is how he tries to deny that a literal JoJo reference in a game from a series full of JoJo references is indeed a JoJo reference.
