Really cool idea, poor execution. The presence of a timer for the whole thing just makes the player expect the jump scares more and more as it winds down. Someone somewhere will turn this idea into something great.
@thebleachbartender1312 Жыл бұрын
My easy suggestion would either be just a big spooky monster to make it a tiny bit scarier. My more difficult suggestion would be adding segments where talking is required. As of right now as long as you don't talk, you win. But adding segments that require some input from the player that if too loud will cause death would add a lot to a pretty tensionless game.
@blobbem Жыл бұрын
@@thebleachbartender1312 Requiring the player to actually talk would be a good start. Maybe have it so that if you don't make a noise for a few seconds, a monster just kills you. Anyway, mute people are OP. Pls nerf.
@stygianskies4776 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't work because there needs to be an additional lose condition beyond raising your voice. Once you realize it's a walking simulator with no consequences the tension is entirely gone - no matter what ghost or monster or horrifying creature shows up, it'll inevitably just phase through you and then be promptly forgotten about
@porotchy Жыл бұрын
how's it sound to just get rid of the timer when coming down to the final minutes? Like expecting a final scare to jump out, but with a tension in not knowing when?
@sirduggins Жыл бұрын
@@porotchy One of my favorite tubers called Power Pak did a great video on squirrel stapler where he talks about that effect. That game also ends with a timer + jumpscare, but they aren't perfectly in sync and the dev uses the timer and a chorus of music to bone chilling effect making you on edge waiting for something to happen. Another game by the same guy as Squirrel Stapler, Iron Lung, also does the same thing of slowly building tension to a climactic "BOO" ending. Perhaps this game gives away what to expect far too quickly, and you simply can't be surprised? There is a lot of difference in execution comparing these 3 games but I do think they are all worth analyzing in what works and doesn't in video game horror.
@pareidolist Жыл бұрын
My biggest problem with this game is that the jumpscares-which are the actual "challenge" of the game-have nothing to do with the gameplay. It's not like you open a door and a monster jumps out at you. You open a door, nothing happens, and then thirty seconds later while you're retracing your steps, a ghost face pops up on your screen because some internal game timer decided you were due for another jumpscare. There is nothing you can do to affect things in any way. The game itself is almost irrelevant.
@maskettaman1488 Жыл бұрын
If you knew actions like opening a door were the triggers for scares then it'd be much easier to prepare for it
@NekoinaBox2000 Жыл бұрын
The game spawns the entities that scare you randomly when you enter an area. It’s coincidence not how the game is designed. Sometimes you get spooks back to back sometimes you do get scared behind a door. Like 20 different KZbinrs had different experiences and yet everyone online critiques this game for this when those videos prove that your idea for how the game works isn’t teue
@pareidolist Жыл бұрын
@@NekoinaBox2000 But that's exactly what I'm saying-the jumpscares aren't based on the environment, they just occur randomly. Like, instead of a ghoul climbing out of a grave, it appears out of nowhere, shrieks, and vanishes while you're walking through an open clearing. It's all totally arbitrary.

I feel like this idea would automatically work %1000 better if you made it where the player had to find clues about some horrible event (essentially add a story or make it story-based) that happened in the forest and ditch the timer entirely. You can tell the game is desperate to scare the player to make them lose near the end of the timer. But the beginning atmosphere, especially with the broken plane with the recorded screams, was very good. Oh and actually don't make your character die in the end for no good damn reason - hate it when horror games make you do that.
@derekeliopoulos2670 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would at least help a bit. Better than having completely unrelated jumpscares with no logic or relevance to eachother at all. Like when "scary man" or "scary woman" jump up in your face and mad-dog you, then run away, how does that read as anything other than funny? The whole thing feels like those theme park Halloween scare events with the scarers for hire that you know aren't allowed to hurt you so its not scary because it has no stakes and that there's no real malice behind the scarers.

The games idea isn't bad for a horror game, but the game doesn't use the idea to its best. I think the biggest issue is that there's kinda no tension. If there were ways to die without screaming like just being chased by a big spooky monster that kills you no matter what, it'd increase the tension. But at least from what I can tell as long as you don't make a noise, you'll never die. Which is a lot easier than most would expect.

As someone who doesn't scream when startled, I agree completely. The biggest threat to me would have been once the timer hit 0 I might instinctively cheer and that would kill me. The concept is great, it just needs a little fine tuning imo. My suggestions: - Give an actual objective to the player so they aren't simply wandering aimlessly waiting for the timer to run out. - Have more interactions with the monsters so they pose more of a threat and don't have to rely solely on cheap jumpscares. For example, what if you have to fight off the monster lady that rushes you by mashing spacebar, or maybe there is a killer who tries to catch you in the gas station, all while having to remain quiet? I think a few changes like these would make the experience really unique, fun, and dare I say, scary!

This started off really strong - I like the VHS recording style, and it seemed to be piecing together some interesting stuff with the downed plane, the woman stuck to the tree, and the vending machine. The first scare was very strong, but once it went on then I started to realize that there really wasn't anything going on aside from unrelated screaming and jumpscares. The air raid siren, the birds falling from the sky, it felt like it was leading into a more cohesive narrative. It could use more dynamic, location-based things to interact with, which would also incentivize the player to actually explore. Making the timer only count during movement was a good idea, and I liked the use of lights to draw the player's attention, but ultimately it just didn't deliver. I do hope that the full release has more substance, since this feels like a proof-of-concept prototype.

This is a really cool idea and visually it looked great. I don't even mind the jump scares as a means to get people to scream. As far as jump scares go those were pretty good, imo. However... the game can't be dependent on them. There needs to be an objective with a narrative with some jump scares thrown into the mix. Also, having the player get a game over from a scream just seems like a bad idea, it would be better to lose health with each scream instead so you have room to work with. I'd say keep the concept and visual style and make an actual game out of this and it will be really good.

The enemies don't even detect the audio, and they're not even real enemies. you just die if you're too loud, so weird

You’re telling me alien isolation’s mic detection was a bad idea? Brain dead
@masterowl123 Жыл бұрын
@@therepublic21 well it's not what people bring up when talking about that game.

@@therepublic21 Are you SERIOUSLY for real right now!? Have you ever experienced the mic horror in a game called 'Skronkeyboop: Day of Reckoning'!? You have absolutely ZERO brain cells for knowing NOTHING about a game I thoroughly understand. Stop typing, put your phone down, and go play 'Skronkeyboop: Day of Reckoning' before you embarrass yourself any further!

I've played gmod jpeg jumpscare maps that were more subtle than this.
