This is so FUCKING sick. I’ve literally never seen a company do this before, going back and fixing a flagship title decades after the fact for free in an update, repairing everything that's been broken over the years by hardware and software updates and changes. Obviously there have been remakes, remasters, and enhanced ports, but it's rare they're much less expensive than the launch price of the original and more often than not break more than they improve. Most games would only ever get this love this far after release through fan mods and projects- every version of Sonic Adventure not on Dreamcast is broken as shit, it was only about 7 years ago fan modding got deep enough to fix everything the porting teams fucked up, eventually making it the definitive way to play. So seeing Valve do an official version of that for free is some of the best fanservice I've ever seen in my life.

@nathane5287 Жыл бұрын
@@Thatsme1ogan HL2 in 2023 works fine, but it's a similar situation to where Halo 1&2 were on PC with Gearbox & Vista ports breaking visuals and subtle behaviours (before 343 fixed 95% of issues with MCC on steam). Valve with the episodic releases and other Source engine game releases and updates broke over the years in 2006-2009, especially the 2013 steampipe update, saw a ton of stuff lost in the shuffle. - Did you know that launch 2004 version of Half-Life 2 had NPCs like Metrocops visibly flinch from every single pistol or SMG bullet hit? They've done some minor fixes where they do flinch again in 2023, but it's like first shot then maybe every 5 shots or 5 second cooldown before they'll flinch again from a hit. - Metrocops also used to crouch and cover their head, yelling "grenade!" with every grenade that landed near them, but now in 2023 it's very inconsistent, the behaviour is still lurking somewhere in the code, but rarely triggered. - Valve did a lot of shader tweaks over the years, abandoning old methods to do shaders for phong shading, but it resulting in many shaders still being kind of broken or way too muted today, like Metrocops had shiny highlights on their uniforms & boots, the AR2 was very shiny like it was made from the same material as the Combine metal structures, but nowadays it's just very matte and dull, also throughout levels there are shaders here and there that are broken or missing, metal pipes, some other terrain, a ton. - Other stuff, like fog, particle effects, have also been broken/lost in engine "upgrades" and never properly restored to their 2004 glory. Some Grass is also broken at times in maps, and also some baked shadows here and there look broken in the 2023 version. - Sound effects too! Did you know in 2004 Manhacks & Scanners had unique metal hit impact sounds to differentiate them from just other generic metal props? So that you could instantly hear that you hit an enemy manhack instead of some static metal pipe behind them. (there are other subtle sound differences, footsteps on different surfaces can sound really broken in the modern source engine version) To be fair to Valve, someone there was tasked with making HL2 work on the Steam Deck between 2020-2022, and they fixed some stuff, like ragdolls were absolutely criminally broken between 2009-2021, Like enemies you shot just slumped over like they had no bones and no force/momentum was applied to them from the killing blow, but someone did finally after over a decade fix it whilst making HL2 compatible with the Deck, also NPC eye blinking was finally fixed after a decade of it being broken, same with APC & gunship turrets being broken. So some stuff has been fixed in the last 2-3 years, but more remains, and one can only hope that with the 20th anniversary coming up next year, Valve will sit down and let people experience HL2 as it felt to play in 2004 (flinching is a big one for me as people often complain of how bad the combat feels in HL2, when it was better than it is now)
@Thatsme1ogan Жыл бұрын
@nathane5287 well hopefully they do fix those one question, tho I haven't played HL2 VR, but does that also have the same issues ? Also, i just hope that it is also fixed in HL2 RTX even tho i can't run rtx on my laptop because I can't afford a computer 😢
@nathane5287 Жыл бұрын
@@Thatsme1ogan Most of these things aren't and will not be properly fixed in mods like the VR mod or RTX mod until Valve also update the SDKs with fixes-- There have been mods attempting to hackily work around these and many more issues (like MMOD has it's own hacky workarounds for some stuff), but the SDK can be limiting as well. Now I haven't played the VR version so I can't speak for it, but I do know from many other HL2 mods that they are just stuck with issues the SDKs have as well until they get patches.

For people who don't know: HL1 never run properly on any PC made after like 2005 because newer processors run it's physics/AI engine way too fast and leave the game feeling very clunky (the Grunts for example sometimes act lobotomised on high-end PC's due to the game running on hardware thats orders of magnitude more powerful than a Windows 95 PC from back in the day that the game was designed for). And just as a cherry on top; the Steam version has always been rough - I think there was an update in 2017 that further crippled the game, which is why a lot of HL1 veterans still play the CD-ROM WON version from literally 24 years ago. There's a few other things like the random texture mechanic and exploding barrels at the start of Surface Tension which as far as I know NEVER worked on the Steam release. It always bugged me because it became trendy to kind of shit on Half-Life and say that it's aged terribly, when it really hasn't at all, it's just not been maintaned. They fixed virtually everything and we now a definitive way to play this masterpiece!

I did a playthrough this last week with the GOTY version on disc with the software renderer, and a lot of those issues weren't present. Obviously I had no idea this was coming up, whew. The most immediate thing you'll notice is the very basic main menu, the WON menu is much more visually appealing BUT it only renders in 640x480 and the 3D renderer restarts when you resume the game, so the Steam version is now definitively better in presentation.

This may be unpopular, but even though i really really appreciate things like this, i think they changed too many things for my taste: The only changes i didnt really like, though it may be just nitpicking, is the fact that the 357 does now 50 damage instead of 40, which imo it was okay before because it mean every shot of the 357 in the head was rewarded, but now you could just kill in the body with two shots most of the time. And also the satchel buttons change. I know that its more logical, but i get used to it that now it feels awkard to me. They also removed the possibility of using the HD pack. And it doesnt matter whats the general consensus is, it was optional, and i prefer it, so give me back. And the HUD is way too big, at least for a 1366x768 resolution. We need a hud size option.

I only use HD models for Blue Shift, since that expansion was kind of designed with them in-mind.

My guess is the new maps can be more detailed due to the load being less significant on modern hardware and infrastructure (since it was meant for multiplayer), but it's just a guess.

HL is my favorite game of all time because of how impactful it was for me when I was a kid. When I saw it got a substantial update it blew my mind a bit. I thought we would never get another significant update for it. I highly recommend checking out the multiplayer for a couple hours. The mp got a bit of a boost because of the update and there's been a good amount of people playing but I'm sure that will die down fairly quick. Would love to see a fullsauce video of some mp like you did with Quake. It still holds up really well and it's a lot of frantic fun.

i just think its so nice that valve still cares about their games even if they aren't really making new installments of their ip's. they're pretty much the opposite of nintendo- putting in the effort to keep the old games relevant, yet not releasing too many new things (at least in reference to their ip's (e.g. portal, half life, etc)

We will not rest until the TF2 Sex Update gives us Pyro naked, finally revealing their sex. Or Pyro will be the obligatory kinky member of the Update, with a latex suit and whatnot.

5:20 I almost don't like that! I'm sure we'll be able to play the older versions too, but the non-scaling UI is iconic and funi and i likes it. But alright. If we're doing an update to a 25 year old game (like updating Super Mario Bros. in 2010!), I suppose it wouldn't be right not to.

I think I'm always going to prefer this version of HL over Black Mesa anyday, and this celebratory update further cements this game as the definitive version of HL1, even if it broke all my mods lmao.
