Sonic truly is an enigma of a series and even moreso the community. The official franchise is an inconsistent identity crisis but the fandom has people passionate about the IP who dedicate their time and effort into bring out it's potential with projects like Utopia, RoboBlast2, GT, Jhett's memes, and the Snapcube dubs. But there also people in the community who seem to wish for nothing else more than the series's destruction and follow it from sheer spite wanting to tarnish it's name by dragging it through the dirt even more than SEGA themselves have already. This can be clearly seen by the last game of this segment. Like out of all the series the Internet tends to bastardize I've never seen the others have such a vibe of underlying contempt, like the subfandoms of horror themed Gatfield stuff while they don't really respect the franchise just typically seem more drawn in by turning the safest and inoffensive IP around into a twisted psychological eldritch l thriller, there's many that make jokes and criticism of how unfunny the series is with projects like Lasagna Cat but it doesn't strike me as the same feeling of personal levels of thinly vield bitter detestment that I frequently see here. Like do these fans even like the series at all or are they just wishing for it's downfall so they can kick it when it's down and laugh in disgust? There's been some freaking weird as hell people who have worked on the series itself too, Ken Penders on most accounts is on a similar level of infamy as CWC except he actually wrote for the series and made comics about fascist echidna war horrors, quickly dismissed molestation and cuckoldry, and copyright infringing rugrats babies overdosing and dying from LSD. Like it feels many people both unofficial and official are just trying to help sabotage it's reputation as much as possible. Just by all accounts nothing about this series makes sense.

I have a theory about this - Sonic is sort of unique in that it's got bright cartoon animal designs very reminiscent of western animation influences, particularly Mickey Mouse and company, but its narrative tone is a little older and comparable to a lot of shonen anime in that it's aimed at preteens and has a bunch of explosions and faux edge and such. So in America, I think it gets a sort of much-milder case of what you might call the "Princess Mononoke effect". Christian fundie moms look at Sonic and see a safe, cute thing for sweet little Brayden to be allowed to like, so they have no problem letting him play the games. BECAUSE Sonic and friends are fun animals, it's simply taken for granted that the IP is innocent. Of course, in some ways it is, in other ways it's not. Since little Brayden is kept extremely sheltered from other media aimed at preteens on Sonic's level, it's his first introduction to a lot of "darker" and "spicy" tropes, even if that's not what the identity of the series really is. Rogue the Bat is the first character design Brayden ever sees with prominent exposed robertsons. Amy, who often flies off the handle to beat Sonic with a weapon and is treated as an exasperating annoyance for it, is Brayden's first experience with a love interest character. Shadow the Hedgehog frames his understanding of moral struggle. Sonic is the character that becomes Brayden's foundation of what's cool and what to emulate. Elise kissing Sonic might be the first time he ever sees a kiss, like, EVER! That's why there's so much weird erotic art AND religious art of these characters, why the fanfics get so violent and strange, why people like Penders have such a strong attachment to it all... I would be willing to bet a few years of my life that Penders himself grew up in some kind of similarly sheltered weird fundie way as a lot of Sonic superfans and that's why he wrote everything the way he did tldr The outward aesthetic of the Sonic series makes it seem like it's aimed at little kindergartners to fundie moms, so the shonen preteen stuff in Sonic has a wildly outsized influence on the development of their sheltered kids

I was surrounded by kids who felt this way about Sonic at my religious schools, but I myself never got into it because my mom hated video games in a general sense, and wouldn't even let me watch stuff like Spongebob until I was FOURTEEN. I rebelled harder than most kids do and went behind her back a lot on the internet and in books, and spent a lot of time teaching myself to think about things critically and be skeptical of her because I started to realize she was lying to me. I was actively protecting myself from her by the time I was fifteen, and if I hadn't been, maybe I'd be a Ken Penders. I can look at those weirdos and have empathy and sadness for how they turned out, because a lot of it strikes me as rotten upbringing they didn't have the context to save themselves from. And I bet you that - like me - a lot of them were hit by a mom or dad, and that's also part of why domestic violence is so normal and resolvable in this fan stuff. To a lot of these fans, it IS a normal part of their family life. Sorry to get real heavy, but I do think it's important to talk about this stuff whenever possible. When you think about the context of it, all the bizarre fanworks and stories are something Sonic is the circumstantial vessel for, not the source of. The actual source of it is the deeper problem of human abuse and the American Christian culture of repressing unwanted influences.
