In the Archie comics Sonic, there's a backstory in which it's explained that Sonic initially had to constantly replace his shoes because his speed made them burn or something, until Robotnik(before turning evil) made him appropriate sneakers

It's very possible because they didn't try with the design, obviously, the jokes are cheesy and not that funny, the casting choice is bizarre, they most likely stole ideas from movies (portal rings, time stop???, probably more), and overall pissed a lot of Sonic fans off and are targeting kids because they think children are dumb enough to like this shit. Detective Pikachu is inconsistent - Pikachu actually looks fantastic imo, and Greninja, Jigglypuff and Mr Mime look pretty alright to me (the latter makes sense to be terrifying). However, a lot of characters have minor problems that ruin them: Ludicolo is too darkly coloured, Psyduck just looks a little too big, Aipom is slightly too terrifying and Mewtwo just looks like an old man. Also I like the Charizard model, but the Pokemon TCG art doesn't do it any favours. However this movie fucked up the one character it needed on a massive level.
