This is definitely a show case for an innovative use of AI in video games. No replacement for actual written dialogue in a story driven game, but excellent for something like this. I watched Limes quote evanescence lyrics at one of the people in the game and the AI picked it up and responded they were "already sad enough" before slamming the door.

Imagine this concept being taken to the next level for a game like GTA or Cyberpunk where you can literally tell your NPC sidekick specifically what to do or talk your way out of confrontations. I'm imaging something like you and an NPC are sneaking up on a house and you tell them "you go around left and hide behind the picnic table to and provide cover fire, I'll go around the right. Don't start shooting until I do" or something to that effect, and then the NPC just does exactly that. They could have personalities that make them more prone to ignoring your commands etc. The possibilities are amazing.

@@jeffboy4231 It is still impossible by merit of languages having many differences in grammar and vocabulary. There's, for example, the question whether to translate the literal text (e.g. translating German's "Scheiße!" as "Shit!" because it literally is shit) or to translate the "vibes" (e.g. translating German's "Scheiße!" as "Fuck!" because both interjections are used in similar contexts, while "shit" is too mild). Plus, some languages are so fundamentally different that translating them requires significant changes to the sentence that may miss the point of the original sentence. Sayings are quite nonsensical in other languages as well. For example the Russian saying "Тряхнуть стариной" is literally "Shake the old days" (which is also how Google translates it), however it actually means something akin to "It's like the old days". And finally... some languages literally do not have the words for some concepts. The only way around this in most cases requires awkward sentence structures, or in English's case, giving up and just using the other language's word. Schadenfreude and Kindergarten come to mind, both being words taken from German to describe things English doesn't have a word for. TL;DR Due to languages being more than just reskins of each other, translations inherently result in information being lost. Thus, perfect translation cannot exist.

This one generally isn't set to reference media, you can see in the responses it doesn't extrapolate with additional information from the universes Vinny mentioned (unless they are generic). For example if you said you were Link, it wouldn't respond by asking if you were travelling with the fairy Navi, instead it would make stuff up that is generically relevant to the subject of fantasy, heroes, and adventuring. They will only respond with specific names and stuff if they are first mentioned by the speaker

Don't know if anyone's checked the website on this game yet, but it does indeed use AI language models to interpret your speech and control NPCs behavior & understanding. When you buy the game, which I think was around $12-13, you get the game and it comes with 10,000 AI tokens. The AI model used by the game is not capable of working locally and once the tokens are out, you have to pay another $12-13 for more. I imagine in the future, they may allow you to connect a different premium model account which allows you to play endlessly as long as you have your own AI generative tokens, but you should know at the moment, it's kind of a subscription based thing due to the costs of generating the AI interactions server side.

Cool proof of concept, but it makes you wonder if AI can hold up in a proper singleplayer story game, it works here because it's a very out of context setting and at best these NPCs know their neighbors but that's it, otherwise you can throw a lot of bullshit at them and get away with it. Also because of the how the AI is implemented, requiring what is essentially a subscription and internet connection, a story driven AI game would be downright inferior to just a game with good writing. Maybe their use-case is somewhere else, that's what the point of all this is I guess, to find out.

Well, probably not. But that's not really the point of AI. If you want a specific plot to play out, you make the specific plot play out. You don't give the prompt to an AI and hope it guesses the exact plot you are going for. It has it's uses.

I've grown to fall in love with games that use AI text in the way this game does. It has the potential to add an extra layer of randomness to an otherwise one-and-done game experience, and I like how all of the pedestrians have unique personalities and quirks in how they talk, which encourages the player to reconsider how they engage in conversation. It reminds me of a game that came out last year (I say game, but it was more of a short tech demo) called Inworld Origins. It's a short cyberpunk experience where you're a detective investigating an accident, and you have to interview multiple characters to get more information. The catch with that game is that all of the characters were driven by AI, and responded entirely based on your input. It gave the player a lot of freedom to interact with the NPCs in any way they wanted (apart from anything NSFW, of course). Ross and Giwi played it last year on Giwi's stream, and they were able to trick one of the NPCs into having a full conversation about One Piece, talking about its favorite story arcs and characters. Even Ross and Giwi were caught off guard by how coherent the AI was throughout the whole thing, and it's what I remember most about that demo lol.

Just bought it and immediately got into the house by spinning a story of how I just chased a 30lb raccoon out of my shed and it ran into the man's backyard. The point is to make you vary outfits. That's why you loose all clothing to turn into a bat and the watch can take them for themselves. That way you are encouraged to try different disguises, but are not forced to if you stay alert.

There'a really only one thing making this sort of AI not work in games, the fact that you can convince the characters of anything and completely break the reality of the world, so I think the games that play into that are gong to have the most luck.

This just made me sad at how chatgpt can only take on one personality, which is if a kid started writing silly messages to a tech support online chat worker who has to respond and play along otherwise they'll lose their job. I cannot think of default chatgpt as being anything other than clones of one businesswoman who is fast at typing trapped in an underground secret facility, with a gun held to their head ready for the trigger to be pulled and the next clone to take its place if the user isn't happy with their response.
