I think its in its snappiness and juxtaposition. Snappiness: Often the death happens in the blink of an eye to a sign or the most random thing. One frame ago, Mario wasn't a puddle with the hat left behind. Juxtaposition: This is super mario 64, you expect cartoony, but not violent spray of blood. Snappiness again: He forgot that signs do that.

If it isn't apparent or exploited in the video, the baby penguin yelps ten times before Mario auto-kicks him. If he's put down on the eighth or ninth yelp, it should be fine. You just need to be in a spot where he won't wander off a cliff.
