Well, Sonic is an unemployed carefree teenager, Mario is a self-employed mature tradesman. It's kind of baked into their own personality

Actually, the boom of Mario OCs hit around the exact same time as Sonic OCs. Sonics became particularly noticeable in the early 2010s, which was the exact same span as the peak of the Super Mario 64 hex-coloring community. Smalltime KZbinrs would alter hexes in SM64 to change Mario's in-game colors, and then they did a bunch of Machinima-esque sketches in the game. A ROM was even developed where all the terrain and wall textures were made the same hue of green, to use as a chroma key for capturing animations to edit into footage taken beside other OCs (before multiplayer was made). Unfortunately the second-biggest of these channels got cancelled for sexual stuff (and for corruption on his chatroom and later Discord server) and the whole community tanked as a result, effectively killing all similar channels regardless of their size. It didn't help that most of them constantly ostracized Sonic fans, heavily depended on collaborating with the top two channels for clout, and because No.1 was busy most of the time, they had little choice but to sell out to the predator to get anywhere.

I personal believe that Nelcon Mario’s being kidnapped by the driver, due to him not wearing a seatbelt. As for Malbio and Luke, your assumption wasn’t far off lol. I had a slight explanation in the submission form, but while taking a trip to Austin, Texas in 2023, I encountered these guys while passing by a random shop one day. I have no clue if these guys were able to be bought or if they were just for display, I didn’t go into the shop to see sadly, so Malbio and Luke may still be there. My personal headcanon is that, rather than just assuming these guys were ai generated or stolen off of the internet, the owner of the store modeled these brothers themselves, putting every detail into the model to have them end up looking like those “this is what Mario and Luigi will look in 2012” images. Thanks for showing these off and giving them a proper name!

Red Bard & Polygon Donut did videos about Koala Mario. It's one of many koala statues that were decorated to raise money for the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary's wildlife hospital in the Australian city of the Gold Coast. These statues are later donated to various local businesses, shopping centres, libraries, etc. I believe Koala Mario was given to one of the city's Timezone arcades. I remember seeing a pop-art koala statue at the Helensvale Library.

Here's a little bit of unsolicited information about the "Vario" brother. It's just a character used on the cover image of one of Savant's older albums, aptly named "Vario". The album was heavily influenced by video games and the character is a "mario-fied" version of the artist's stage appearance which is typically centered around various versions of that mask worn on a character. Savant also worked on a video game or two which included a few of these album characters as cameos, which is what is seen on Stream. There's nothing really more to it than that. Not really a "Mario OC" but definitely not "bootleg quality Mairo" either. Just a character illustration for an album made 13 years ago. Still doesn't necessarily qualify for the segment (by who's standards? Don't ask me, I don't know) but I felt like a little bit of background is warranted to waylay the "Mario OC" claims. Savant makes some pretty good music. A lot of EDM but also does quite a bit beyond that genre and has been at it for a good long while now.

I had no idea small businesses hijacking Mario for their advertising was so common. theres a local pizza place near me that has a giant 5ft tall cardboard cutout of Mario in their window with their logo lazily stamped over the M on his hat

Here in Finland, I once saw a plumbing company van which had Mario on its logo and pretty sure they used the Mario font too
