Fun fact: the phone game at 30:18 is Nakayama Miho no Tokimeki High School, which was a collaboration between Nintendo and Square. It was directed by Yoshio Sakamoto (Metroid) and Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy). Nobuo Uematsu did the soundtrack. It was a dating sim that would reward you with phone numbers which you could call to hear a message from the idol Nakayama Miho. When you beat the game you had a chance to obtain merch. It may not be a very good game, all things considered, but it's a very interesting and lesser-known curiosity in my opinion.

@@JoeDan54 because high school's the only time in Japan where they felt they were truly free and had no responsibilities. Wait, hold on. Maybe someone can help me understand something here? So, Kirby's Epic Yarn-for those who've played- was initially a game that starred Prince Fluff. However, given that Kirby's Adventure commercial around 17:25, the art style predates the game. Maybe I'm to believe that the Prince Fluff part of the game didn't even have a predetermined artstyle before deciding it would become a Kirby game, dood?
@alfiehicks12 жыл бұрын
That's probably the case. They most likely had a game about a world made of yarn with an unfinalised art direction, got the opportunity to make it a Kirby game, then someone on the art team either remembered or rediscovered that one old Kirby advert and decided to take inspiration from it.
@Rave2652 жыл бұрын
@@alfiehicks1 I agree. The fact that they took such a deep- obscure, even- dive back into Kirby/Nintendo history and made a game out of it is truly awesome. And it's hard to say otherwise, given that the character designs are very similar between the two.
@ancycles17832 жыл бұрын
Hi, bit of a late reply but in an Iwata Asks interview with the developers Good-Feel and Hal Labs on Kirby's Epic Yarn (Can't link it but it should be easy to search for) They mention that the concept of a yarn game definetly came first before Kirby was involved. Iwata: "I see. By the way, Kirby's Epic Yarn wasn't originally intended to be a Kirby game. You really did start from scratch and for a while were making a completely new title called Fluff's Epic Yarn. Fluff, the main character at that time, shows up in Kirby's Epic Yarn, too. A "world of yarn" has been the setting for this game from the very start. How did you come up with the idea of a world of yarn?" Etsunoru Ebisu: "The person who came up with the original idea was Madoka Yamauchi, director of Wario Land: Shake It! He's Planning Section Manager of Good-Feel, and one day he came to me with that idea. When I asked him how he came up with it, he said it just sorta came to him." The idea to turn it into a Kirby game came much later into development when it was suggested by Nintendo. Probably afterwards the specifics of how Kirby animates in the yarn world was partially based on the ad, it really is strikingly similar.

Ratchet and Clank was full of it, like with the slot machines and rusty metal gate sound to name a few. Most of the time you might just not know that it was a stock sound effect. You really have no idea where you're going to hear some of this stuff either which is kinda fun. Remember the "Diddy laugh"? Diddy Kong Racing drilled that laughter into your head, so you can tell from a mile away any time it's used and it both annoys me and makes me laugh. My heart filled up with warmth with that first commercial, one of my favorite toys growing up and I still have like 7 of those pikachus, unfortunately none of them talk anymore😞 and some def are damaged due to age, I would love to have a new one again one day. I haven't heard them speak in over a decade

One of my favorite things about them was if you had a few around each other, they'd speak to each other, like if you activated one by itself it may talk for a minute or so? But if you had like 2 or more together they responded and would talk for awhile. I always got so sad when you dont press their hand buttons and they start sounding sad before going silent. That's always how I killed their batteries when I first had them, cause I always interacted with them so they wouldnt be sad

SEGA was insane in the 90s with different versions of the Genesis, they made both a PC Genesis combo in Japan only with IBM, and an entirely separate one in PAL with Amstrad. They made multiple variants in Japan alone, and the Genesis didn't even do well there.

Samus should have counted because she’s going from the real world into the video dimension.

1:42 I grew up with one of those! But I don't remember the ear and mouth moving, nor the cheeks lighting up. It talked and that was it. A nightmare to wash too.
