Some neat trivia that I'm sure someone else has already mentioned is that the man in all the bonus rooms is a character named Doctor Arewo Shitain. In Wario Land 4 he's an archaeologist who came to conduct and expedition of the ancient pyramid in the game. Originally, however, he's a character that comes from the JP exclusive GB game Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru, otherwise known as The Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls as a researcher on Nantendou Island, who would help the protagonist, the Sable Prince (who appears in Smash as an Assist Trophy)! This is probably the second time a character from that game has appeared elsewhere, as the first was in Link's Awakening with the character of Richard, who originally appeared in Kaeru as Prince Richard of the Custard Kingdom, rival to the Sable Prince. Fittingly, Kaeru can be seen as having laid the groundwork for the GB Zelda titles due to it's similar top down style and I believe the same engine? Unsure about that last part, though. It's a fun game with a fan translation out there that has a pretty great sense of humor, so I'd recommend trying it out.

I'm so happy to see Vinny finally playing this. Brings back a lot of memories! My parents got this for me for Christmas the year it came out (I was in the second grade at the time), jokingly saying that they bought it because Wario looked like me. The thing was, I had never heard of this game or saw any ads for it before opening my Christmas present. I found out years later that my dad actually went to Toys R Us, and asked each employee in the game section about what games were really good and fun. It really warms me up just knowing that no matter how many times in the past my parents have told me "games will just make you stupid," they at least wanted me to have a good time while my brain apparently rotted, haha! But I digress... this game really does hold up. I still have the cartridge and have played it recently, and it's still as fun and as challenging as newer games nowadays. I hope Vinny has a good time with this one.

I remember grabbing my brother's Gameboy Advance and playing this game before I could even read. Seeing it again and actually understanding how the mechanics work (e.g. I never knew how the health bar under those hearts worked) is a bit surreal. Also, the room-to-room transitions are now noticeably reminiscent of Metroid Fusion.

To be fair, that happens in any platformer Vinny plays, games are simple enough that allow him to zone out and talk about other things. I prefer that to him not having anything to say at all and defaulting to do empty let's player commentary "Oh now I jump here aaaaand I made it, gotta throw this rock here and eat the fruit this enemy throws, Ah I got it!"

Wario Land 4 was 11 year old me's jam in 2003. Its a shame my friends over looked this game because of Pokémon. Another awesome game boy game overlooked because of Pokémon was Warlocked on the Gameboy color. I honestly preferred it over Pokémon too. Good times

@@XradicalD Pretty accurate impression. Start with half health during stages with less health pick ups, and just half health to defeat the bosses. Gem pieces, Ghost Key's, CD's, Full Heals, and Frog Statues changed location for the worse. Time limit is reduced extensively. ( rough estimate of around a 3rd to half it's original time normally ) Enemy placement, puzzle complexity, nearly everything gets tougher. And finally boss patterns have changed to a harder pattern and boss items now cost 1.5 their original cost. Fun times. And then there's Super Hard...

I beat this game and 3, though I never got all the optional stuff in 3 - both great games. This game is probably harder than 3 just because you can't actually die in 3, you just get pushed back a few screens usually. Plus this game has an optional Hard mode that's actually kind of tough - reduces level escape timers by a LOT and puts the required collectibles in harder to find locations. That said, 3 had some real annoying parts - I still have nightmares about the soccer rabbit boss - and 4 isn't all that hard on Normal.

@@doclouis4236 Yup it's basically just as Arras said. 2 and 3 rely more on punishing you not from game overs, but by losing coins and having you go back to a previous section if you missed something. But 2 in my opinion is somewhat easier than 3 since 2's levels are typically a start to finish deal with some secret exits, whereas 3's will all have 4 exits that can be accessed depending on items you've found in various other areas, items which may change various levels in different ways. 2 and 3 pretty much share most of the same gameplay mechanics as 4 though. Hell, they even look the same as one another.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention WL4 also has an unlockable Super Hard difficulty. You start every level with 1hp (though I think you can still get more?), items are moved yet again (the tutorial level has the clock frog at an undodgeable spot near the start, so you're timed for the whole level), timers are even shorter (I think you have 15 seconds to beat the first boss), and there's more enemies - plus if you want the 10000 points in every level to unlock the karaoke, that just makes things even harder.
