Nah, not really. It’s pretty clear which boss was which. Venom founded the Outer Heaven PF in Africa, and bit the big bazooka in the first Metal Gear. That fulfilled his role as a body double, while Big Boss was building Zanzibar Land. Although, it kinda seems like the entire Foxhound operation to infiltrate Outer Heaven was to throw Venom under the bus so Big Boss could slink away to Zanzibar Land and continue development of Metal Gear there. Anyway, the real Boss got severely burned by Solid Snake in Zanzibar, and basically lived as a meatsicle for the next decade and a half.

I think I prefer the plot to Snake Eater over this. Everything happens thanks to nanomachines, we're thrust into a setting that I don't think is fleshed out fully, every character dumps exposition whenever they get the chance, and too much in the way of character development comes from back story rather than what happens in game.

Ancient comment I know, but I just want you to know that you're in no way wrong. MGS4 was never meant to be a thing, and it shows. There's multiple people who worked on it who were absolutely furious with Kojima's work in this title. I'd be willing to bet that it's because he definitely wasn't passionate about this one. It stands to answer questions and handle things that were meant to have no clear-cut answer... but fans wanted them. Rumour has it that Kojima received a multitude of death threats through mail, and that this pressure is what lead him to develop the game and pack as much content into it as possible to satiate the rabid fans who wished to get closure from the (subjective) masterpiece that was Sons of Liberty.
