Alpha Sphere Zero was actually pretty solid until the ending, if they just hung on that skull image that wouldve been genuinely quite creepy but no, they had to give it a stupid scary voice that sounds like a chainsmoker

Have you seen the first Alpha Sphere hack? Vinny's run doesn't show it, but the first hack has (I think) 3 jumpscares. One of a kid with empty eyes and blood tears, one of a distorted mule/horse face, and one of a demented version of Dr. Andre without his lab coat. The Dr. Andre one is the only decent scare because of story context, everything else is just "Jumpscares because horror game"-tier.

If I remember correctly, Vinny played before the non Director's Cut version of Eyeless last time. Director's Cut has different areas and was actually "beatable" while other version simply crashes at some point. I was co confused by the crash when played it myself. Also shoutouts to this hack for using Mario Paint music. Edit: AND Earthbound music. I found out recently by accident that main theme is "The Place" from Earthbound OST.

I used to make SMW romhacks and it's actually very difficult making something that's as fun and well paced as Nintendo's level designs. I would frequently design levels that are easy for _me_ to play and then later realize it's way too unfair for anyone else after getting someone to playtest it

Also Nintendo has the advantage of their levels being the first levels most everyone will play, so that initial impact of 'wow the physics and visuals are really cool!' are associated with their levels. They also get the advantage of having a big team of people. I also kind of get the vibe that people make romhacks for other romhack makers and a good level pack just isn't as fun for the community compared to something that totally changes the engine

i actually got quite invested in alpha sphere bc wasnt even trying to be a scary mario thing but tried to tell its own story within a mario world framework. not really sure what happened in it though the silentum level in the next one is actually a really cool concept. i liked that a lot it took me too long to realise the yoshi one wasnt a romhack and was just a fangame. that explained a lot. that was actually interetsing until the exe stuff started coming in and then it got kind of interesting again and then it just stopped. what was the evil grey iggy koopa about?? i couldnt take the scary baby mario seriously from the get go. i cannot get enough of these scary marios theyre doing something to my brain

I swear, over 90% of these "horror" super mario world rom hacks just have to involve frustrating and unnecessary platforming for absolutely no reason other than making them harder. It's no wonder people like Vinny chose to not complete these rom hacks, not because Vinny lacks any skill but because hard platforming shouldn't be the main focus of "horror" mario rom hacks. But that's just my opinion.

Hi, me again: creator of ALPHA SPHERE and it's prequel seen here. Regardless how you may feel about the ending, I'm happy with how it turned out overall. There's a number of secrets that can be found sort of fleshing out the story of the two games together. I made this in half a month, and while I'm planning an update to both games, I'm thankful of Vinny for showing them off. I'm currently planning out how the sequel is going to play out. While development for it has started, there's a lot of assets I need to program and design before I can really push the level design. Currently I'm creating other things, like designing for Law & Order: MKU (which an update for the pilot just came out) and making bosses. The Mario boss from the kaizo hack "Perchance" is one I programmed. So I'm doing a lot of stuff, and hope I can use all I've learned for ALPHA SPHERE 2.
