I guess why so many people use characters like SpongeBob, Mario, sonic and etc as horror game bases, most likely stems from people wanting to do that horror game trick of using a familiar thing and then contorting it. Which I believe is the same reason why zombies are considered scary, as they are humans (which is familiar) but they are both hostile (in a way they can’t be reasoned with). A lot of people say this was a trick used by Nintendo in several games and occasions, simply,y taking the familiarity of something then twisting it to make it feel extra scary.

the main takeaway i got from these games is that a spongebob horror game could only feasibly work if it was a horror _comedy_ title based on an actual episode of the show (e.g. "graveyard shift", "nasty patty", "scaredy pants", etc.)

It sure is easier to find things to like and commend about these games when you're not actually the one playing it • Nightmare in Squidville has a more deliberate premise and does try to break away from the usual gameplay tropes of horror games • "Squidward what is wrong with you" is a lot quicker to get you into the gameplay, even if it is just collect-a-thon with creepyzaza badguy

Most of these have to be shitposts. They're too funny to be scary. Also, to add to the AI debate, I think it's okay as long as it's not used for profit. A meme game that's completely free is mostly harmless. And if the AI is janky enough to the point that you can tell that it's obviously AI, then that's even better.

As long as we understand that AI is just a tool and the means to an end, it's all gonna be fine. I've said this over and over but the real problem is two-fold: people demonize and humanize AI to the point of blaming the program instead of the maintainers, and the maintainers aren't the engineers and programmers that built the thing; most likely the ones who make decisions are corpo shills that only want the big bucks and don't give a single care to what's morally and legally correct.
