I have said from the very beginning that Chris Cornell has the best voice in rock and roll. Period. AND I love Layne and Scott and the others, but Chris has the range, the ability to scream in key. I don't think he ever sang a wrong note in his life! Perfection in everything he sang and OMG, HANDSOME , BEAUTIFUL on the inside as well as the outside. GOD truly did just create one perfect Chris and then broke that mold!

@@bai9608😊But even Steven doesn't have the incredible range that Chris had or the PERFECT Every Time screaming in perfect pitch! Steven's voice is genuinely fantastic BUT Chris's voice had more "texture" to it, if that makes sense. His voice was clear or thick or silky or raspy, perfectly adapting to whatever he was singing. Steven's voice always sounded the same, GREAT, but always the same. Chris had about 5 different sounding voice techniques. Just my opinion, but he was just THE BEST!

Kurt did cool things with his voice in addition to singing. Some of it was akin to rap as well, like weird forms of deranged rhythmatic storytelling, squealing and moaning, intentional voice cracking, etc, so interesting. If this were an American idol contest, you could rank him low, but his voice was so much more than that, and in the right context, you could also rank him higher because of his creativity.

However each singer has different qualities to his voice and interpretation of songs and how they should be sung with expression and feel. To me that was the main unique quality of Layne. Of course it very subjective but I think Jerry Cantrell bought out the great potential in their performance, song writing, embellishments and harmonies.love hate love is brilliantly sung as are all the AIC songs and what a great group of musicians they were. I think Chris Cornell is an objectively better singer. Especially listening to some of his acoustic work. His phrasing and improvisations are creative and sensitive and just impeccable. But Layne had a voice that was so perfectly suited for their style, plus his harmonies with Jerry, it all just worked so well together that I can’t even dispute Layne being #1. Chris is an extremely close second though, in my opinion.

@@daltonc.5720what is everyone basing this “Cornell is technically better” on? Staley had plenty of technical vocal training and experience and had a far wider range, better control, power, vibrato, distortion, and made it look effortless. Cornell, to me, is a bit one note excuse the pun. He really stays in what is obviously a comfortable range for him, and in general he’s not doing anything particularly interesting with his vocals, it’s usually very typical type of classic hard rock heavy metal fare that doesn’t really take any risks or produce any real “wow” moments. Not to say he’s bad, he’s obviously talented, I just don’t get this “he’s technically better” talk it seems like people who don’t have a technical understanding of singing looking for a reason other than personal preference to justify their choice of one over the other?
