Okay im not historian nor reading the manga of vinland saga, but here is my explanation why askeladd take this risk (NO SPOILER). Askeladd mention that taking canute for themselves would profit them because they can put canute on both side and get money, no matter what is the result of war. If they gave prince to england, england would intimidate denmark with it, and if they gave prince to denmark, they would rewarded. But if they help denmark army, askeladd option just taking the prince to the king.

When Askeladd said "can't you hear the footsteps of ragnarok" with his confident and that really give me ghoosebump. But then some flashback of his life flashed, you know when anime got some flashback shit they are not playing anymore.

that conversation between askeladd and thorfinn is so fucking good

there's a scene in this episode that got cut out from the manga that adds a lot of insight into Thorfinn where when he wakes up from his dream there are some vikings in the barn with him about to rape this english girl and she looks at Thorfinn pleading for help and he just walks away to be alone which is why he finds himself on that hill with Askeladd.

That actually adds more depth into his character, for Thorfinn he doesnt see that girl as worth getting distracted for because he himself is focused on one thing, and one thing only.

Remember when, commenting episode 8, I said that there was something strange in Askeladd, something greater than what he seems to be at the first sight? Here we have other examples of that. I am not talking about the risk he is taking here, but about the talk he made with Thorfinn, exposing his thoughts on what is happening to the world. His idea of the "Age of twilight", the prelude to the End of the World, is something quiete important to understand this character and the reasoning behind his actions, even the risk he is going to take to get the prince with him. This is why this episode is set around the concept of "Ragnarok".

Well, it's kind of hard to understand what Askeladd was actually doing and thinking. But this is my opinion, he wants to move more efficiently himself. Not joining a large army and moving unexpectedly was what he wanted. To him, getting involved with Thorkell was a huge risk, so he killed the messenger to keep his whereabouts unknown and associate with people of high status as much as possible so he had a chance to survive.
