5:36 You hit the nail on the head Ange. Ketils' character(arc) is very well written; One is initially lead to believe that he's a benevolent and kind man (for a slaveowner anyway), but the truth is that he's not a kind man but a *weak* man. One that becomes cruel to those "beneath" him when faced with any form of adversity - and the signs where there the whole time.

Thorgil is quite smart. I would expect him to put up a great fight and maybe even win if he was given enough prep time. But if they just clashed and a good old brawl then Thorkell wins.

Olmar saying "I can't swim with a sword on my back" feels like a throwback to the very first episode to me, were Thors lets go of the sword while underwater, both then swimming away from the battle. They both came to the same conclusion in a very similar way. I just love the symbolism and parallels this show consistently manages to put into each episode.

Good that you think Thors is a coward like Olmar, as he was a coward who let others fight for him rather than fighting to protect others like someone does.

@@VeylmanTheRock Yes he is as is Thorfinn and so is Thors, if you would rather save your own life at the expense of protecting another, you're the biggest coward to ever have existed, the defense of a life is the greatest thing a person can do. The message of this series is abysmal, run from danger because you don't want to hurt others, cowardice in the extreme and the most selfish mindset to ever have been said.

@@VeylmanTheRock I'm not trolling I'm being 100% serious, the message of Vinland Saga is to be a coward and run from danger because you're more important than others. It's what Thorfinn did throughout this whole arc, the one time he actually stood and fought for someone it was forgotten a minute later and he just let people beat on him. It's cowardice, if you want to do a story about pacifism do one on Gandhi, it won't have violence so it'll be boring but it'd work for the story.

You also need to remember Kettles backstory the old man told. Kettle was in love and had his wife stolen from him. Everything that recently happened to him was like a wedge shoved into deep unresolved trauma. I'm not justifying his actions but the story was laid out in a way you could understand the reasoning behind Kettles sudden personality shift.

5:37 Personally, I don't think Ketil had everything he wanted. And he did have something taken from him, which I think is now fueling his anger and refusal to back down. I think the one thing Ketil wanted was the girl he loved in his youth who was given away to the powerful and wealthy a-hole land owner that forced Sverkel to hand her over. After she was given away and then killed soon after, Ketil's relationship with his father soured and Ketil was a lost man. I think him building the farm to the extent he did and becoming wealthy was because of his trauma and powerlessness to save his 1st love. He never wanted to be in that circumstance again. He became convinced he needed to have strength, power, and wealth to prevent anything from being taken away from him again. That became his solution to dealing with what happened in his younger days. However, as we saw in his private scenes with Arnheid, Ketil wasn't happy. He was miserable and lonely in his role and shared his inner thoughts with Arnheid. He's scared of Thorgil, his relationship with his wife and Olmar is crap. He doesn't get along with his father. And everyone else on the farm is his subordinate, for whom he must play the role of a strong leader to maintain the illusion. He hated acting as the brave & strong leader and dealing with the hard & stressful responsibilities that came with his position. He hated putting on the act. He was clearly more at home just working the fields with everyone and just being a farmer. However, his obsession and fears would never allow him to part with any of what he'd built. It calls back to the same warning Sverkel gave earlier in the season about a man who builds wealth will become paranoid and obsessed with protecting it, thus he puts more effort into protecting it, which requires making more money and more power. It becomes a cycle that will only make him a bigger target. It will only bring misery. Ketil built his power and wealth so nobody would be able to make him a victim and take from him again, whether he understood this or not. However, it was never enough. Ketil became fearful about losing what was his (thus unconsciously or subconsciously reopening his trauma from losing his love) and continued to amass wealth and power, bringing on retainers and so forth. He had to bribe the king with tons of goods every year to receive Harald's protection. He lied about being Iron Fist Ketil and hired bodyguards to safeguard the people and properties. I honestly don't think Ketil cared that greatly about his wealth and power. Sure, it mattered to him. It made his day-to-day life comfortable and easier. However, it wasn't the wealth or power he desired. It was the delusion of security he thought it provided him. All of it was just his obsession to never be a victim. All of his actions and efforts stem from Ketil still longing for the woman who died. I think Arnheid even became a forced substitution for Ketil's 1st love. She had no choice but to speak the words he wanted to hear and provide him the physical comfort he wanted. Just like he used the power and wealth he amassed in a futile effort to protect himself from his past trauma, he tried to use Arnheid to soothe the empty hole in his heart. She was the placebo. It was all a delusion, though. He thought he loved Arnheid, likely treating her like he would have if his 1st love still lived, but Arnheid did not love him. When he returned to hear she tried to run away, I think that hurt him more than the looming loss of everything else in his life. I also think that is why he refused to let Leif buy her. By that point, Ketil was just obsessed with the idea of not letting anyone take anything from him. So along with refusing to listen to Snake's wise words not to fight, or give up Arnheid, he decided to tighten his grip on everything. All he knows is he won't let anyone take anything from him, regardless of whether he actually wants those things still or not.

Arnheids entire life on the farm was the epitome of peaceful. YES she was a slave but did you see a single whip mark on her when she was naked in bed with Ketil? NO, of course you didn't because Ketil wasn't that man. You didn't see whip marks on ANY of his slaves. The one time you saw him forced to hurt people it was because outsiders stole from him and he was forced to hurt a young boy for STEALING FROM HIM. YES the boy was poor, but that's no excuse for theft and YES his punishment was severe, overly so but he took 20 blows rather than 10 to protect his sister who was ALSO a thief. Compare that to the life that Einar had before being bought by Ketil, remember his one escape attempt and the theft of food? That got him scars on his back from whipping. Compare that AND how Ketil treated people to how Garders life was. Massive scars, repeatedly whipped and kept in CHAINS until he broke out and became the savage beast he'd been beaten into. Arnheid's life was paradise compared to literally everything every other slave of that period of time was meant to put up with in this story and out. And you say she didn't have peace. No, like the sister who didn't take her own punishment because her brother wouldn't allow it, Arnhied is being let off of being the most manipulative and horrible person in the story, using her beauty and her place to control all the men around her into doing what she wanted them to do, getting at least 5 of them killed at Garders hands and teeth. That you're willing to forgive that but condemn every other person sort of exemplifies the problem, you don't see what she did as wrong but you condemned Thorgil for defending his Brother who was set up by a madman despot who poisoned his own Brother to take control over Denmark that set this whole fight up. When a person will forgive a person one way and condemn another for polar opposite reactions there's something severely wrong there.

Go to our episode 14 reaction from Season 1. The show does a good of reminding us that they’re not good guys. I think theyre good characters and make the story entertaining. With Ketil, he was introduced as a nice and gentle guy, so to see him flip a switch is much more abrasive than seeing thorkell and askelaad remain much of the same since we first met them

@@CarlieAndAnge The plot put us in Arnheid's shoes, we were betrayed with her. Surely she had confidence that she could outmaneuver Ketil after all. She knows what she means to him. My comments always aim to create discussions, anyway, the cool thing about good works is the plurality of meanings.
