Vinland Saga - Thorkell’s spear throw

Thorkell, & his men were given information about Askeladd’s whereabouts.
Askeladd has a warrior named “The Ear,” among his men who has exceptional hearing abilities. The Ear alerts Askeladd that the enemy is coming. Askeladd’s men (the Danes,) are continuously marching, trying to escape Thorkell. Although far away, Thorkell being the beast that he is, has an otherworldly spear throw that frightens the Danes.

I mean... I hear this a lot, but I'm tired of people acting like "Thors was stronger than Thorkell = by a huge margin". Like... No. Thors was marginally better at best, factoring for everything (Thors wasn't likely more physically strong than Thorkell, but had more intellect, charisma, morality and wisdom). Like Askladd fought Thors in a duel (okay, Thors was holding back and he pulled out a win). Now pit Askladd against Thorkell. It's game over. Hell, if Thors threw out morality and just went for the kill Askladd would've been missing his head a minute in.

@@johndoe-de1db I like to think Thors was just the better fighter. We’ve seen him used defensive stances and was well equipped in hand to hand combat against Askeladd and his men. Added to that, he had remarkable swordsmanship. It’s even stated by Thorkell that Thors rose up top ranks within the Jomsvikings for that reason. Thors was as strong as 6 men when he rows a boat (episode 3) and wasn’t even fatigued. In terms of strength, they’re kinda even, Thorkell might be slightly stronger. The difference is Thorkell mainly relies on brute force, while Thors was more tactical. So given the circumstances, Thors was “stronger”.

Also in a duel of Askeladd vs Thorkell, I can see them being relatively even given the fight with Garm. However Askeladd could exploit Thorkell’s weakness given an opportunity.

Yeah there is something intriguing about Thorkells positive attitude towards his foes. He has this “Oh boys I’m going to have so much fun” sometimes it is out of comedic relief but sometimes downright scary because isn’t something that you can gawk at and still feel like you can win hand to hand combat with literal tower.

This is the anime's brilliant way of showing how strong Thors was. When Thorkell found out who Thorfin was, he said that his dad was his mentor and hoped to best him in a duel one day. So Thorkell does all this insane shit and we think it's awesome, and that only strengthens the greatness of Thorfinn because of his father was stronger than even this dude.

@@Gabu_ Neither the manga nor anime told us that Thors was physically stronger than Thorkell. Stronger can simply mean better overall combat prowess. When Thors knocked out Thorkell, he used his superior technique to manuevre through Thorkell's attack and hit him in his head. Thors, while not physically stronger than Thorkell, is still pretty strong, coupled with the fact that Thorkell's weakness is his head, means that that one hit was a ko.

I'm not sure if I'm right, but in the javelin throw there are 3 main grips, the type that Thorkell uses is very similar to the Finnish grip, taking into account the place of development of the story, it may be a reference.

He didn't do that to reduce the strength of the throw, he rotated his hand to grip it for a javelin toss. Javelins aren't held the same way for throwing as you'd normally hold a spear. The Javelin is rested on the palm, not clamped using the thumb

I think the anime was great , but I don't know why they couldn't just stick with realism, I'm sure it would have been just as good without the ballista arm man or the kid who uses 2 daggers and stupid made up ninja moves, or my favorite, Cnut the Trap.
