This reminds me of something that Danny Carey does in the song, Aenima. It's one of the coolest polyrhythms on the hi-hats that I've ever heard. It takes place about halfway through the second verse and again later in the song. Carey starts opening the hi-hat on every other 8th note (or 8th note triplet depending on what time signature the song is in) while keeping the snare part the same. It creates a really cool effect, just like what Vinnie does in this video. Amazing!!

it does sound like the eulogy drumming, but in that danny carey opens the hi hat on the first note of the triplet pattern. there is a video of a crazy guy called furman who teaches you how to play it (I can just about get it using the ride, but my brain melts trying to pay it on the hi hats like danny does).

Gregg Stockdale Yeah, that one's a doozie. I can play the first three measures without a problem, although it's been awhile since I tried. But it's the fourth measure of the four bar pattern that trips me up because of where the hi-hat opens in that measure in relation to the kick drum part. In my profile pic I'm holding a Danny Carey signature stick. It's from when he was still using Trueline sticks. I caught it after seeing them play at Lollapalooza '97 in Nashville. I ran up to the stage as the band was exiting stage left and I yelled his name as loud as I could. He actually heard me, turned, and made the perfect toss. I made a pretty damn good catch. haha... Notice the big knot in the stick about 2-3 inches up from the butt end.

+drewper73 I had a pair of the true line tribal assault (the non signature danny carey stick). Amazing sticks, although I had a new kit at the time and because it wasn't set up properly I broke every single one! gutted you can't get them any more.

Gregg Stockdale Yeah, Carey now has a Vic Firth signature stick and the knot isn't nearly as big as it was on the Trueline stick. It's a lot more tapered. It's still too big of a stick for my taste. Too long.

Another mind-bending, mind-melting Vinnie moment. Who can do this? Who can just on the fly, superimpose metric modulation in such a way that you come back in on the right accent in the middle of the phrase? Sometime when I watch/listen to Vinnie, I just want to scream and throw my sticks. Or play more. Or quit. Or practice for 15 hours straight. Stupefying is the word...

K Porter - There’s a drummer down here in Fl. Works with Raul Midon currently. I played with him for years. Name is Goetz Kujack. He’s great with certain polyrhythmic grooves- The stuff in this lesson is something he would do everywhere. Also- Will Kennedy of the Yellowjackets. This Austin guy is killing- use his lessons on here to de-mystify and expand. Never throw your sticks, wood isn’t getting any cheaper!!!😝

*There is a song by The Smiths called “Unhappy Birthday” where I felt the natural urge play a very similar pattern to this one from Vinnie. Aenima by Tool has a very similar pattern but with a constant bass pattern over a bit more complicated hat work. Ir-Irregardless, great video as always. Great lick and groove here. I use that kind of variation over reggae grooves with the hi hats quite a bit. I have seen the Dino 4 at the Baked Potato quite a few times. They're amazing. The later version of the group (Jazz Ministry) had Abe Laboriel Jr. instead of Vinnie.

that pattern vinny does of skipping the beat after he opens the hihat is found in a lot of his other polyrhythmic grooves, like the Days of the Week sting song. It's definitely a reference to the more common 16th note patterns in pop music, like &a1 &a2 &a3 &a4 or 1e& 2e& 3e& 4e&

Good video Austin! You have a real knack for pin pointing the highlights of a performance and breaking it down in a clear and simple way. Was just working on this. I think to absorb this idea it's best to make at least 3 more permutations of the basic pattern. Start with the original then move the open hi hat to the right by one 8th/triplet then practice playing a 4 bar loop of the basic groove for 2 bars then one of the permutations for 2 more bars. hmm...wanted to upload a pdf...but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it here.

They could be playing Blue Miles by Chick Corea. On a number of live occasions, Weckl and the rest of the CCEB really went to town with half note triplets in this one. Vinnie could be referencing that in this clip. As always, awesome job, Austin!

Your vids are great man I always enjoy.. I am always intrigued though meeting so many drummers over the years, on how they count time. I have heard so many variations when it comes to triplets. I found for 8th notes 1 an a 2 an a 3 an a 4... to groove the easiest but obviously to each his own whatever works best. I took lessons for 12 years from a legendary western New York jazz drummer/teacher played with Tommy Dorsey, Billy Holiday etc.. he used to teach it as 1 trip let 2 trip let 3.. Just breaking up the actual word which I found effective as well. I was curious as to know when learning how u counted 16th note triplets and 32nd note “ “... only because whilst taking lessons yrs ago I found those to be the counting that is to be more crucial obviously bc of more notes. It would be great to hear your input because like my teacher used to say you could live 10 lifetimes and still never know or master everything there is to this instrument. Keep the videos coming you do an excellent job and you are a really great player. I can’t remember if you have done anything by max roach or Art Blakey.. Some people probably wouldn’t consider him a “great” but it would be cool to see one on Chad Sexton as a more modern day guy. Thx man

If you notice, Vinnie does the Möller technique on the hi hat with two downstrokes and an accent on the opening. This subtle difference between the way Vinnie played it and the way Austin played it, which was more even, is the difference between a Jazz/Blues approach and a Metal approach. One is not inherently superior to the other, but each appeals to different audiences and fits different situations.

Yea there's no real shortcuts man. You just need to get a book that is all about reading and work on it til you get it. The one we used at M.I. is called The Encyclopedia of Reading Rhythms by Gary Hess. That kind of book goes over every possible rhythmic notation you would ever come across. After that it's just applying all that to full drum set notation on a staff but if you have the framework for that first, it's not that bad.
