Thomas Hearns as a welterweight is almost unfair lol. His unicornish build at that weight, with an INSANE reach, hand speed, while having that kind of power is something you just never see. Had he played it smart, instead of being the warrior he was, he never would have lost in that division. Such a great fighter, and was a problem for almost every fighter he ever faced, in MULTIPLE divisions. One of the coolest nicknames too.

But he did lose in welterweight to Sugar Ray. That being said, it would have been extremely difficult to make weight as he got older. I read somewhere around the time of his first Leonard fight that he appeared slightly weakened trying to make weight for that fight.

I coached a youth Bball team when I was 19. Hearns sponsored a team we played against. His team was gigantic and were creaming mine lol. At the end my team wanted me to get in and play (I'm 5'11" but they called me Baby-Jordan). Tommy and I agreed to play the last few minutes. The kids basically let us have a dunk contest and let me tell you: Tommy Hearns was amazing. I jumped from the bottom of the circle once and threw down a 2 hander - Tommy not only matched the distance, he was practically horizontal when he flushed it; it was unreal. That dude woulda excelled at any sport he wanted to play. Phenomenal athlete.

He is incredibly underrated. Without a broken right hand I think he could have done the impossible and stopped Hagler. In his first fight with Ray he came on far too light at 145 and it cost him in 13 and 14. On any other era than that of the four kings he would have retired undefeated at around 45-50 fights with 40 + KOs. Oh and he would have been Mayweather's worst nightmare.

I grew up on the east side of Detroit and watched most of these fights on TV as a kid. I ran around the room cheering when Tommy won and cried when he lost. I had an Incredible Hulk inflatable punching bag and would pretend I was Tommy Hearns exacting his revenge on Sugar Ray. Then one day, decades later, he walked into my Wizards of the Coast retail store to buy booster boxes of Pokemon cards for his son. On a whim I asked him for a fist bump with the hand he broke over Hagler's head and he smiled and laughed and quickly obliged. Thanks for the memories, Tommy.

Hearns’ punching power was awesome in welterweight division, remained deadly at junior middleweight. But while he moved up to the middleweight as a 160 pounder, his power though still devastating, wasn’t as damaging as before. The bout with Hagler lasted only 3 rounds but earned him great respect (it was revealed later that Tommy had broken his hand in the early round). I love and admire Hearns a great deal and always thought he would be a better boxer when he moved up in bigger division because his tall frame can do more good in carrying more weight. Years afterwards SRL admitted at an interview he thought Hearns should’ve won their rematch instead of a draw.

The stoppage on that sugar Ray Leonard fight just sickened me. 15 ground fight, and he’s up on the scorecards and the ref shows zero respect by letting him fight until he’s knocked out. I feel for Tommy about the first srl fight and the 2nd srl fight anyone who watched knows what really happend. Iron sharpens iron, says the Book of Proverbs, and during that 70-80's era there were decidedly 5 stalwarts [some would say "kings"] of the non-heavyweight divisions, namely, [in strictly alphabetical order], Benitez, Duran, Hagler, Hearns and Leonard. They brought out the best in one another -- as, with the exception of Benitez-Hagler that never happened, everyone of them fought every other one. Sugar Ray was the best performing fighter of the lot as he beat all 4, scoring KO in 3 of them, while at the other end of the totem pole Duran was the worst performer losing to all 4, with KO in 2 of those although, ironically, his sole win was against SRL [which was SRL's sole defeat although in reality, despite the scorecards that had it "draw", he lost to Hearns in their rematch in 1989]. So in summary, their greatness was predicated on their having existed together! By reverse logic, those who trol Mike Tyson for reigning over a "weak" division miss the point. Iron Mike pulverised his way through whomever was put in front of him, it wasn't his duty to produce the surplus of enough lionhearted to challenge him -- that is, even if at all it's true that there weren't! 'nuff said.

One of the only guys because of his size to begin with when he would go up in weight his punches were just as strong if not stronger with his added weight. Unlike Conor who when he goes to 170 is much weaker than his opponent usually. And at 145 is a monster. Hearns was always lethal at any weight

Such a tragic childhood, then prison, literally never boxed professionally until his 30's! Noone ever fought Prime Sonny Liston!! Imagine how great he would have been if he started at 18. Hell even 21, he would have been unstoppable. He was dominating guys in their 20s while being a 40 something killing machine. But again, his story is so sad!!! It broke my heart finding out everything he went threw dealing with the mafia. You're an incredible storyteller and please never stop! It is greatly appreciated and enjoyed !🙏 ❤

He did a fight camp in Northern Michigan for the first Leonard fight and I was a 15 yr old Amateur at the same camp. I saw him lay out middleweights wearing 18oz gloves. He was so bad ass in person. The whole Kronk team was great.

My favorite boxer growing up. Always sat down on his punches from both sides. Beat Sugar Ray in the second fight and was kicking his ass in the first(until he made some technical mistakes) and broke his hand early in his lightning fight with Hagler. Fought everyone, never backed down and always gave 100%. Always an event when he fought. I still feel bad that he just fought too long.
