Thanks to everyone who has commented on this fight, no matter the stand on it. These older fights are so much better! FYI friends, Lalonde used his money from this fight wisely to become a millionaire many times over much in the same way Larry Holmes did in real estate. Just a little where are they now info. I also would like to ad that we do not allow racism on our boxing channel fight comments section. Comments that could be considered racist toward ANY race will be deleted and the user will be banned from this channel. There are many other channels where race venting is encouraged. Thank you.

one of the most manipulative... have you forgotten all of the things leonard did to make sure his opponents were at their worst... before leonard fighters were eager to fight other fighters at their best... to prove that they were the best... leonard ushered in an era where fighters look to weaken their opponents in any way they can... and to stack the deck in their favor...

@@jaye501 True, more so in the mid to latter stages of Rays career. Cherry picking his time to fight Hearns at a higher weight. Waiting for Hagler to slow down some before fighting him. People can debate that Ray had problems with his detached retina, fair enough with that around that time ,but, even after that he still waited till certain fighters had gone past their peak, Hagler so and Hearns even more so. And as great as I think Leonard was, he still lost to both Hagler and the second Hearns bout. There are rounds where people can debate which way they went, and make points in the Hagler bout. But, the Hearns fight was definitely a win for Tommy. And Ray himself has said in public a few times that he lost the Hearns fight.

I was a young teen when this fight happened. I remember it vividly. Lalonde was really hyped up for this fight. He showed heart and toughness but had no business being in the same ring as Leonard. And I do recall having that same feeling about Richard Steele not checking Lalonde after the knockdown. Lalonde was clearly out and it should’ve been stopped.

After Robinson, Leonard is the best welterweight champion in boxing history. Armstrong, Gavilan, Napoles, Trinidad. even Floyd Mayweather jr., etc., all great welters. Leonard beat Benitez, Hearns and Duran at welter. And dominated a great division, one of the best P4P in his generation. Best boxer P4P in the 1980s, easily can make a case for this. Indeed, Ray Leonard is the best just after Robinson at welter, IMO. Many other great welterweights, gotta rank Leonard among the best ever in that division. Also way up there in top 10 or 20 can put him P4P best boxers of all time, IMO. And I am a huge Duran fan. Place Duran above Leonard P4P, still think Ray is top 10 all time P4P. Very tough guy, Ray Leonard, refused to lose bringing it up from the gut, great heart to match his great talent and skills at boxing.

This was the first time World Wrestling Entertainment Inc (Then known as Titan Sports) ventured into a non wrestling PPV. They marketed the fight to the nines on their shows. They had an interview with Leonard during the intermission of Summerslam, and Leonard co-hosted Friday Night Videos with Mean Gene Okerlund. They would do it again in 1997 when Leonard took on Hector Camacho and that was because TVKO pulled out, but Titan really didn't promote it that much. I remember seeing the clips after it happened. Steele should have stopped it after the first Lalonde knockdown because he was out on his feet. He shouldn't have been allowed to go on.

Man, rewatching this fight years later. The ref should have at least looked at Lalonde's eyes. He was done after the first knockdown. Ref doesn't even look at him just grabs the hands which looked pretty limp. He could have been hurt bad. Lucky he wasn't. I am a Sugar Ray fan & felt bad for Donny. Dudes head was being pinballed all over that ring.

this was at the end of Ray's career . he was still good but not great. the three year layoff was too much. he barely won the Hagler fight and Hearns 2 was where he should have stopped. he was fighting flat footed by then

Good Win one of the best ever KO Champ! 😊 People are hating as always for some personal reasons or another, but Donny Lalonde this former champion champ held the championship belts here in 1988 and could have easily just say No to fighting Ray Leonard. Period. Not being a sucker, and Avoiding the catch weight clause. So no he chose and agreed with it because surely it was a Big payday for himself and he certainly for sure felt he could beat a older Sugar Ray Leonard regardless of anything even saying the man is past his time and should retire, and disrespecting him all alone the way before the fight Day. So why fault Ray for and anything???!

Right before he KO’d him Leonard was in a bit of trouble. He was always able to summon up superhuman abilities when he needed them the most. Was a very dangerous fight vs a much bigger guy. He was a bit stationary and a bit undisciplined at times but still able to overcome.

Sugar Ray's "final" accomplishment. He chose his opponent well. "Passing the torch" to Terry Norris was appropriate at the time but Terrible Terry didn't quite have Sugar Ray's chin or legendary opponents with parallel careers.
