People forget how amazing any gaming related videos were to a kid in the 90s. Pre-internet, when the only things you could watch were network television shows and big studio-made movies, these kind of niche game videos were priceless. My brothers and I had that entire Donkey Kong Country video memorized word for word, we watched it so much.

I was a 6 year old kid who loved my N64 so I watched the "Change the System" VHS a number of times. I remember putting it in the VCR one summer's day and my mom goes "Oh, you're watching that ad again?" in an annoyed way. But from my 6 year old perspective it was a cool video where the people in it loved the thing I loved. Not so different from watching Let's Plays or streams in the modern day.

Yeah it is weird how people joke about SEGA America's mid 90s ads but don't ever talk about Nintendo doing the same thing. And it's not like it's bias either, I'm a huge SEGA guy but I've never seen a SEGA KZbinr make fun of the N64 ads the way general gaming KZbinrs make fun of SEGA Saturn ads, and even SEGA channels like Pandamonium do it [no hate for my boy Pandamonium he's cool as hell] So maybe it has to do with SEGA's failure as a hardware manufacturer? Like adding insult to injury, "oh SEGA died but is it any wonder with ad campaigns like this?" that sort of thing. The Saturn's lack of popularity in the west VS the N64's deep-rooted nostalgia creating fuzzy feelings and respect in the minds of those same western gamers probably adds to that.

I don’t like the sentiment that react videos are inherently a bad form of content, Vinny is a perfect example of how they can work so well. His commentary them really fun, and the topics are always fascinating stuff we’re all into. That especially has to do with the content being community submitted. Not only that, but he’s actually passionate about what’s on the screen and gives his own input and expands on it (Which like, when you put it that way it’s honestly just the bare minimum) it’s such a shame that the reaction video genre has been saturated with awful half-assed content that give it this horrible reputation.

You say that as if the final boss doesn't have a heavy metal track being played over it. They generously show unedited gameplay, show off special effects, highlight and explain gameplay mechanics. Don't see what's being masked about the game here or how it's being misrepresented as something that it isn't just because the host is high energy while he's explaining it and music is playing.

Yeah, a lot of games with an anime art direction had their visual style altered on the box art because anime was still niche until the massive boom in the 2000s. A lot of SNES mascot platformers had to be "Westernized" and EarthBound was so unconventional that Nintendo used gross-out humor to market it in America. Thankfully we're not in that era anymore and people are more open-minded in terms of what games they'll play.

Adore these silly things. The only one I actually got in the mail was the Hot Newz 64 one, and it was my favorite thing ever as a kid. (I was super hyped for DK64, and this was my first time seeing actual footage of it.) I later experienced the majesty of the rest of the tapes when they were uploaded to the internet. (Originally, I could only find most of them posted by a particular user on Gamespot, meaning that I had to deal with the PAINFUL loading times of their built-in player. Thank god for the advent of KZbin.) Personal favorites include the Star Fox 64 (still love randomly imitating the exact acting of the Sony guy's "So you're telling me that this Rumble Pak actually lets players FEEL...THE GAME??" for a laugh), DKR, and Invasion of Nintendo tapes. (Since Super Mario RPG is my favorite game ever, you can probably guess my favorite segment from it.) Really enjoyed hearing Vinny's reactions to these. I'd love for him to dig into other similar material for a future stream, like promo videos from other companies (I know Ubisoft did one for Rayman 2 and Tonic Trouble and there's a Sonic & Knuckles one that takes a shot at Donkey Kong Country in a super 90s way) or Nintendo's SNES era CES and E3 videos. (The 1994 and 1996 ones are uploaded and they're really fun time capsules.) Maybe even throw in Nintendo's 90s product demonstration training videos. (The 94 and 95 editions of those feature that same Josh guy from the Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi's Island tapes.) I just love seeing these peeks into gaming's past. Also, fun fact: that Rodney Kageyama guy talking about Ken Griffey in the Invasion of Nintendo video actually has a pretty decent acting resume. (Even has his own Wikipedia page.) I first became aware of this when I noticed him as one of the Banks' neighbors in the first Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Christmas special. I was like, "IS THAT THE GUY FROM THE INVASION OF NINTENDO VIDEO???" 😂

I got the Majora's Mask one in the mail when I was a kid. No idea why, I don't remember being signed up for Nintendo Power. I actually liked it because it focused on explaining how the game is different from Ocarina of Time, and I think one reason Majora's Mask was so divisive was that a lot of people went into it expecting it to be very similar. So I wound up going into the game knowing very generally what to expect, and it ended up being my favorite Zelda game to this day. But also, was that tape really only like 4 minutes long? Looking back, that seems so wasteful. So much plastic... I feel like I need to go rescue a sea turtle now.

It came around the tail end of the SNES era and was about an agent from a rival company infiltrating Nintendo headquarters and uncovering all their projects, secret agent style. The whole thing ended with the dude uncovering the N64 and getting digitalized and abducted by it. It also had a sequel that came out once the N64 was already current gen, with the guy escaping and giving a report to his boss, and used beta footage of Ocarina of Time as the climax.

I'm sure someone else has said it by now but vinny has streamed shadows of the empire, I forget if it was quit because of technical difficulties or just being to rough in the controller department. Anyway searched vods to see if I was hallucinating or not. "8 years ago" I thought it was more recent than that.

I definitely owned this when I was super small because my dad had nintendo power since issue 1, but we sold them or threw them away at some point, and I destroyed a lot of the old ones as a baby (or so I was told, idk) Still have issue 1 and almost every issue after 87 or so. Really wish I had finished my collection before things started getting scarce

I think the guy from Hot Newz 64 might actually be Reggie Fils-Aimé's long lost evil brother. Like, you'd probably find him locked in suspended animation under Nintendo of America HQ because it was the only way to contain his unrelenting torrent of full eye contact, head-shaking quips

I literally thought about and tried to find as many of these as possible, Vinny has stolen my thoughts to use for his own dastardly agenda. How does he do it?
