Oh I absolutely love these types of dolls, recently I realized how much I really liked porcelain dolls and the old 40/50s idolization and creativity of these dolls. This one though, the lovely cherry red goes so well with her deep brown(what looks like a nice pecan too) and pale completion just makes me feel so warm just looking at her. Sweet sue is absolutely adorable, and admirable if you were to add "rose" somewhere. Like sweet rosen sue or sue rose!

Oh, Sweet Sue! I actually got one for Christmas - when I was in 6th grade! And then, within a few days, the kid next door grabbed her and sprung her legs. That was 1957. Yes, I still have her and the rest of the dolls that survived. One I had sat on the heat register that warmed up her rubber and ruined her. The rubber/plastic got soft and gooey and I couldn't bear to look at her.

Oh my, your poor little sweet Sue! And your poor little rubber dolly ~ i actually saw a little Dydee doll that looked like it had met a similar fate. The folks selling it thought they had a real treasure on their hands, and I’m sure that sentimentally it was ~ but yah, the appearance and likelihood of that doll ever getting back to normal…….not so much, lol! Hi, wood filler shrinks and I’m curious if the doll crack areas become flakey after restoration. I’ve restored many cracks or nicks with micro mesh but am genuinely interested in the long term effects of wood filler. Have you been using this technique long? I did some searching and could only find people suggesting sanding instead- I’m always open to learn new techniques tho!?
@CarolsCurrentObsession4 жыл бұрын
Hmm ~ I have not experienced any shrinkage at all with the wood filler, actually. But, if I have a large area (instead of just bitty little cracks and crazing) I will actually use floor patch on the area first, and then because floor patch tends to be rough, I smooth that over with wood filler, and then paint over the top of that. Now, that being said, I have not done any huge all-of-the-compo-paint-off-sand-it-down-and-repainted-the-entire-doll type of renovations. The dolls I have done typically don’t have more than a little patch of paint flaking off here and there on the head. I have seen gals (Tammy Laskey, for instance) flake off the entire paint base of a dolls head, and then re do it with wood filler, and their finished project looks very very good. But I am not really a painter, and I don’t feel comfy with an airbrush, lol, and my skills trying to repaint a face, so I just don’t take in those desperate doll projects. Totally respect the folks who can, though ~ it is an art! To further answer your question, though, I have been using wood filler for MINOR composition repair for a few years, and the dolls in which I have used it, I have not seen any shrinkage, flaking, or other problem with the filler, Or the floor patch. However, I live in Idaho, and it isn’t very humid here at all ~ in fact, its an arid desert, so it may have a different effect elsewhere. It gets pretty dry here, though, so I think that if there was a flaking issue, it would definitely show up.
@CarolsCurrentObsession Жыл бұрын
So 3 years later, and that wood filler has still not shrunken, flaked or cracked. So it has definitely performed well, just for future reference. 🥰💞🥰

Just bought my first Madame Alexander doll. It is a Cissy and her ears are not pierced... It is possible to pierce her ears without damaging her? If so please tell me how or direct me to where I can find out. Thanks!
@CarolsCurrentObsession3 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry, I just saw this question ~ you can pierce Cissy's ears if her head is soft plastic by just using a hot pin to do so. If she is an older Cissy with a hard plastic head or a compo head, that is a different story all together. Personally, in those cases, I would not attempt it, simply because I would be afraid of damaging the doll. It could be done, however, if you have a very tiny drill bit and very very steady hand. Again, I personally would not attempt that, but it could be done. The drill bit would have to be pin sized, and you may want to stabilize the area (a small piece of tape on the earlobe for a hard plastic head, and perhaps a tiny drop of elmers glue for a compo head. ) I would try it on a doll you don't care about made of similar material first, however, before ever touching the Cissy.

Do you have a favorite vendor for the wigs and shoes?
@CarolsCurrentObsession3 жыл бұрын
Not really, but I do have a favorite way of buying those items. I like to get lots or bundles on ebay that are assorted styles and sizes. NOS (new old stock) usually yields the best variety, and then I have several different choices for several different doll sizes. You would think that just pinpointing the exact item needed would be more effective, but I've found that sometimes the vendors on ebay are unaware of the exact nature of a great many of their products, and therefore don't list them with the specifics that you would need to pinpoint a particular single item. Case in point ~ just the other day I was browsing for some similar little sandals, & I looked for quite some time under the name & maker of the sandal and came up with nothing. Then I decided I would have to generalize in order to find another pair. Sure enough, after looking up just the words "doll shoes lot", I found a lot that had those exact sandals in them. And as a bonus, there were several other similar sized shoes to work with as well! Anyway, I hope this helps you out in your quest for wigs and shoes. 😊😊💞😊

That really stinks ~ I wonder if you can adjust the settings in your google account to fix that issue? Instagram has some annoying issues with it, though, to be fair. @julzmgrforll72783 жыл бұрын
Hit every thrift store around that you can. Most vintage sold are not expensive if you have the time to hunt. I'm retired and live on social security so I can't afford expensive dolls but I'm so in love with vintage debutant dolls. Not overly fond of baby dolls. The finding and cleaning or restoring them make me happy! Best of luck with your hunt.
@CarolsCurrentObsession3 жыл бұрын
Yes! What Julz said! Thrift shops, garage sales, etc. Also, check out goodwill.com, and eBay.com ~ both have vintage dolls from time to time. (Don't forget to add shipping into the final cost, sometimes it can be as much as the doll, so be careful on that and always check shipping costs.) You can also find wigs on ebay for reasonable prices, as well as vintage fabrics & patterns. I'm also going to be offering vintage patterns on my website for $5 to $7 for full pattern sets. Good luck with your search, often the hunt is half the fun! 😊😊😊💞😊

I don't know if just any wood filler would work, simply because I have only used the Elmer's. If you are going to experiment, be very careful about it, and test it out in a hidden place, such as the ball joint that fits into the hip, or something. No worries on the wig, there are many many wigs available on ebay that will fit and look great, just be sure to measure her head correctly, and you are golden 🥰🥰 Good luck on your awesome buy, let me know how it goes! 🥰

@CarolsCurrentObsession3 жыл бұрын
I'm unsure of the term "pull cord". If you mean a strung doll with either a rubber band or an elastic cord inside holding the head and limbs together, then I do have a video detailing that process. But if you mean a doll that re-positions itself by pulling the cord, or a doll whose eyes change with a cord, or a doll that may have a speaker activated by pulling a cord, then I apologize ~ I have not fixed that type of doll, & do not know how to at this point.

The name of her wig was Anastasia, by Dollspart, I believe. I purchased it as part of a lot off of eBay, and unfortunately I have not been able to find another ever since! It's pretty sad, because it's a beautiful wig!

What does a restoration like this one cost?
@CarolsCurrentObsession3 жыл бұрын
I’m so sorry, I didn’t see your comment till just now ~ restoration costs vary a great deal. If you are just counting supplies, well probably about $30 or $40, but if you are counting time as well, then what is your time worth? I probably spent close to a weeks worth of time in cleaning her up, cutting out and sewing up her clothes, gluing a new wig down, etc. There are probably folks that work faster than I do, but I’m sort of meticulous to details, so I tend to take a little longer because I like it to be right. So, I guess in summary, if you are looking to do the work yourself, its not expensive (if you can find the wigs and shoes at a good price and happen to have a lot of fabric hanging around, as well as old patterns, lol!), but if you were to get it done by a dolly doctor then you are probably looking at quite a bit more $$$. I hope that this helps you out! 😊 😊

Isn’t that doll hard plastic from the fifties!?

This one is actually a compo doll. I have another Sweet Sue that is indeed hard plastic. And they look very similar.

It is interesting how the doll companies made the transition from composition to hard plastic in the immediate post-war era! I'm just learning about it since I thrifted a 1942 Little Sister Effanbee last week for $2!

Wow, what a find! I'd love to see her! It's so fun to rescue these pretty little dolls and bring them back to the beautiful you know they once were, isnt it? I've seen some interesting dolls that just don't fit the "mold", so to speak. I have a 14" doll that looks just like a Toni doll, but it has no markings and it's made of compo. Even has the same hair. I also have some little 7" dolls that look so much like the plastic "dress me" dolls but that are also made of compo. And I have 2 dolls made of hard plastic that look exactly like Mary Hoyer dolls, but just lack the markings. One even came with a set of little iron golf clubs and a golf clubs bag, and the cutest little straw hat.

Isn’t she hard plastic! Not composition?
@CarolsCurrentObsession2 жыл бұрын
You would think so, but no. If you watch this video, you can see the difference between them, even in coloring. She even has the metal head plate & walking mechanism, & yet she is a compo doll. I have to think she may have been a transitional doll, or perhaps a prototype? I don't know, but she is compo. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmmumqx3drGBq6c

Isn't that a Sweet Sue "hard plastic" doll, not a composition doll?
@CarolsCurrentObsession9 ай бұрын
I've answered this on several other comments, and I too am surprised about the nature of this doll ~ however ~ no, it's not hard plastic, it truly is compo. I do have another Sweet Sue that is the same size and she IS a hard plastic, and I did a video on her and show these 2 dolls together as well. Even the coloring is different, as would be obvious between a hard plastic and compo doll. But how do I know for sure that she is compo? A couple of things ~ she has crazing, which is not to be found on a hard plastic doll, she knocks or sounds like a compo doll, and, most importantly ~ if you look at the inside of her limbs, you can clearly SEE that she is compo. I don't know what the back story is on her, or where she originated, but my best guess is that she was a transition doll or a prototype doll. And there you have it. A weird one off? Maybe.... I haven't ever seen another compo Sweet Sue in her size. I do have several 18" and 14" Sweet Sue's that are compo as well as hard plastic ones, but this 24" is the only compo one I've ever come across.

I'm not understanding as the American Character Sweet Sue dolls are made of hard plastic, not composition. The doll your cleaning is hard plastic and should not have crazing. We have a few of the Sweet Sue walkers in our collection. Your doll was wearing her original outfit.

I understand completely! I was quite shocked by her being a compo doll as well. She has all of the features of a hard plastic doll, even the metal pin on her head for the walker / head turning mechanism, and yet she is a compo doll. She is the only compo sweet sue I've ever seen. A doll doctor looked her over and commented that perhaps she was a prototype, or that the first run of them were of compo. If you watch my latest video, you can see the difference between her and another Sweet Sue I have restored ~ the redheaded sweet sue is hard plastic.
