Today we visit an incredible former Charles Town Mall. The structure began its life as a factory then was transformed to a outlet mall which served shoppers, restaurant goers and families for years. The mall eventually closed in 1991 and saw little use and remained relatively untouched until today. Where the abandoned ruins of the mall stand today. Let's take a look at whats left inside one of America's least known abandoned malls.

Seriously, we debated on whether we should continue to film this place. We have been in a lot of horrible structures, but this place is seriously the most dangerous place we have ever been in. That garage area with the abandoned luxury cars, probably would have collapsed if we kicked it... I'm not kidding. I really suggest you don't visit here yourself, even for the local law enforcement since the fires have become such a problem. If we had known about that prior to our visit, we likely wouldn't have gone. Anyways thats my two cents.

The frames are used for screen printing. That's why they're different designs and why there's so many of them. You cut out the design and push dye through the frame onto the t-shirt/whatever you're printing. You found a very cool screen printing factory and I am super jealous

I have to admit I doubt that it was a chop shop of stolen vehicles. It clearly was a site were the took part of the cars but I still would claim those were cars that had been in some accidents and someone was making some money by taking out anything that can be sold. Many of the cars look like they had some extensive damage like one had its roof caved in. I would not see any point of to use the energy to cave in the roof just for the kicks as they most definetly did not have any heavy equipment to do it easilly.

Was watching this video and something felt familiar. When you got to the screen printing area something clicked and I knew exactly what this place was. My aunt and uncle owned a restaurant in that mall. It was probably mid to late 80s when we visited them there. I remember buying a screen printed shirt at that place and of all things a book about farts (not kidding) at another store in the mall. My uncle told me how that place was once a gun factory and the pond on the property was full of defective reject guns that were tossed into the water. Thank you for the video and bringing back some good memories.

You guys made my day. Here I am all these years later and this video shows up. I lost count of how many times I was in that building. As a kid I can remember a friend bringing IBM punch cards to school for show and tell, his mother used to work at Univac. I remember some of the old timers telling me how they used to work there when it was Savage Arms. Some of them went on to work at Remington Arms. When I was in high school I remember school shopping their. After I returned from the Army I spent many hours working in that building. I worked for a communications company and there were several customers that had phone systems I worked on. The biggest customer I worked with was Riverside School of Aeronautics. Lots of memories from that place. And just think, all these years later as I sit here watching KZbin in Waukesha, WI, I stumbled across your video on the old Charlestown Mall. Again, thanks for the video.

I wouldn't be so sure when the cars that weren't burnt out wrecks looked like they were insurance company write-offs even before they were brought there. He stepped on a board, which gave way under him, landed on a rusty 10-penny nail that went through the rubber sole, _between his toes,_ and out through the top of the shoe. Dan explained in one of his videos that he buys cheap canvas shoes so if he steps into some mess he doesn't even want to touch with a cleaning rag, he just chucks 'em and gets another pair out of his trunk.

@@yahstino I think recent is meant compared to the fact that the whole building was condemned in 2009. Even if a car is from as early as 2012, that's still years after the whole building was legally supposed to be empty, so even if it hasn't been operating for a couple years at this point, there was still some kind of substantial activity going on much more recently than expected.

My parents drove all the way up from Maryland back in the day when those structures were being refurbished for retail to see if it would be a good place for their craft store(which they already had). They decided not to do it because it was too far away from family and the management wanted WAY too much rent for such a small space at the time. Like $1500/month.... in the early 80's, that was an incredible amount of money for retail space of less that 1000 square feet. Their store at the time was about 2500 square feet on 1.2 floors(it was a tall ceiling structure and there was an elevated room constructed)... in what at the time was a small town Main Street - for about $500/month.

I just can imagine those courtyards being alive with people and lights. Maybe bring back some commercial use. Inside would have to be gutted. But if u can just preserve the exterior brick. SteelRodent maybe not every part of the building would be salvaged anyways for a project like this. But if a crew went in now they can support the exterior brick walls then go in to tear down the interior structures. And some times the exterior brick does collapse during the project and it forced to rebuild it. I just went to a construction site where they are salvaging just the exterior walls of the brick building and constructing a new library with it at Smith college in Northampton MA. The inside is all brand new. And they are adding to the building as well. Went through some underground tunnels to a different building that they are just renovating which will also be use for the library. Pretty cool site. I had permission to be there. One of the project managers is in one of my architecture classes so we organized a field trip to go there. To bad I don’t go to that college but I still cant wait to see the finished project tho. I also see factory building remodeled into apartment buildings all the time here in mass. Though I don’t know the extend of their abandonment prior to renovation. Most of our mills have been abandon for over 20 to 30 years and we do get snow. But the exterior walls on this building do look nice for the moment. Maybe if I can find it on google maps I’ll play around with the idea on revit. They are expensive project. For my commercial public space class we have to come up with a commercial project proposal with estimated budget based off of sqft. And I decided to redesign the building my class takes in because no one likes it. And with that budget I’m not even gutting the inside I’m more like updating the interior, adding windows because the building has no windows, updating the exterior, rearranging some of the interior layout and doing and extension in the front and that alone is possible like 60 to 80 million dollar project. I’m basing it off of a base price per sqft is my sqft is about 200,000. I actually found out that maintenance needs for the building could cost them $40mil over the next 10 years. So I can’t imagine how much this would cost. But it be an investment depending on the area. Still a beautiful site this building what ever the cost may be.

@@cookieridergirl no point in repurposeing the building if it has building code violation it would cost a fortune which is why if it's rotting away and a few years from falling then might as well tear it down the history does not matter to any of us just build a structure and make it look nice and be done with it no point in saving that piece of junk waiting to fall
@cookieridergirl
@cookieridergirl 4 жыл бұрын
Chris Obrien I never proposed that the project was realistic or financially possible. It just the excitement of working with the old architecture. Plus if they were to gut the entire inside. Your basically building an entire brand new building and just keeping the old exterior as a facade. Could have entire new layout inside. New stairs. New structure. And meet new codes. Is it financially worth doing that? Probably not. But I’ve seen project like that done. And they are beautiful. It be a more expensive demo really to not destroy the exterior walls and to support them to keep them from collapsing. It just a pain in the ass. I just like the feel of the building and the site is all.

Pretty sure Jake was referring to how Disney famously used multiplane cameras to pan through 2D images and create a sense of 3D space (Sleeping Beauty is a great example). What he described is exactly how that technique worked and that tech is from the early 1900s, so he wasn't talking about CGI of today. Your comment is all kinds of condescending just because you aren't familiar with what he mistook that machine for. Multiplane cameras look very similar to this.

The machine at 10:20 is a guillotine! It's for slicing stacks of paper. I used ones just like it in art school, along with many other kinds of vintage machinery that pretty much isn't made anymore but still has contemporary uses in the arts or production of certain goods. That thing is surely over a hundred years old and would've been worth a ton if it wasn't left to decay. And the frames at 10:38 are all screenprinting screens. They're mesh that you expose a design onto like a photograph, then push ink through the open parts of the design in order to print it onto an item. They work like stencils and produce a much higher quality result than digital printing.
